Rungset is an open-source goal-planning app that links long-term outcomes to milestones, tasks, check-ins, and review. Its documented stack combines Next.js 16 and React 19 with Better Auth, Drizzle, Cloudflare D1, OpenNext, and Wrangler. The project is presented as a beta, so its current feature boundaries and setup instructions matter as much as the architecture when deciding whether to run or adapt it.
How Rungset organizes goal work
The project describes its workflow as Goal → Milestone → Task → Completion → Check-in → Review → Adjust. A goal represents an intended outcome; milestones break that outcome into intermediate progress markers, and tasks translate milestones into work a person can complete. Completion history and recurring check-ins support reviewing progress and adjusting the plan rather than treating a task list as the whole system.
Listed features include goal workspaces, task priorities and due dates, recurring tasks, completion history, progress check-ins, notes, user-scoped JSON export, and offline caching. These are repository-described capabilities, not independently tested here. The project links to a hosted app and website; it also describes an Android app as a wrapper around the hosted workspace. What the beta includes—and leaves out
The repository explicitly puts several capabilities outside the current beta scope. Do not assume they are available simply because they are common in planning apps.

How the documented stack fits together
The repository lists Next.js 16, React 19, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS 4, Better Auth, Drizzle ORM, Cloudflare D1, OpenNext, and Wrangler. These are the project’s documented choices; the list does not establish comparative performance or prove that every component has been independently validated.
- Application: Next.js and React provide the application framework and interface, with TypeScript and Tailwind CSS also listed in the project stack.
- Database access: Drizzle ORM is paired with Cloudflare D1, a serverless SQL database. The repository includes database definitions and forward-only migrations.
- Cloudflare runtime: OpenNext and Wrangler are part of the documented path for running the Next.js application on Cloudflare Workers.
- Authentication and data flow: Better Auth is listed for authentication. The repository describes authenticated
/api/*routes and client storage that supports offline behavior and synchronization.
Cloudflare’s D1 getting-started guide, last updated August 25, 2026, explains that a Worker accesses D1 through a database binding. Its examples use prepared statements and bind parameter values rather than inserting values into SQL text. That is a general D1 pattern, not confirmation of how every Rungset query is implemented.

A separate Better Auth Cloudflare OpenNext example documents a Next.js App Router deployment using Workers, D1, and Drizzle. It discusses local and production migrations, Cloudflare context initialization, and authentication configuration. It is useful ecosystem context, but does not prove Rungset’s internal implementation matches that example.
Authentication is not the same as authorization
Authentication establishes which account is signed in; authorization determines which records that account may access. The maintainer’s October 1, 2026 article emphasizes resolving the authenticated user, validating incoming data, and scoping database operations to that user. This is architectural guidance, not an independent security review of every route. The current project details are in the repository; the maintainer article is available at DEV Community.

For anyone adapting the app, user scoping should be enforced at the data-access boundary, not inferred merely because an endpoint requires a valid session. Validate incoming values as well, and ensure each read or write is constrained to the authenticated user’s records.

pnpm install. - Copy
.env.exampleto both.dev.varsand.env.local, then set the required local values as documented in the repository. - Apply local database migrations using the repository’s documented migration command.
- Start the development server using the repository’s documented command.
The repository also documents a Cloudflare Workers preview command as a separate way to check the platform deployment path. Consult the current repository instructions for the literal migration and start commands; they may change. These setup steps have not been run here, so they should be treated as project documentation rather than a verified installation report.
What production deployment requires
The repository’s deployment guidance calls for configuring the Cloudflare D1 database ID, applying forward-only production migrations, setting up authenticated Wrangler access and production secrets, and deploying the Worker. A successful local build alone does not demonstrate that a live deployment is healthy: production configuration, credentials, migrations, and runtime behavior all affect the deployed result.

Cloudflare’s D1 guide describes creating a database, binding it to a Worker, and querying through that binding. Use its prepared-statement approach to bind query values rather than interpolating them into SQL. The separate Better Auth example offers a reference for the broader OpenNext/D1/Drizzle ecosystem, but the Rungset repository remains the source for project-specific setup and deployment steps.
