Roman aqueducts moved water across valleys without pumps by keeping the entire route on a controlled downhill gradient. Where a channel could remain elevated, engineers used walls, bridges, or arcades. Where a valley was too deep or broad for a practical bridge, they used an inverted siphon: water dropped from an upstream reservoir through sealed, pressurized pipes, crossed the depression, and rose on the far side to a receiving reservoir that was still lower than the starting one.
The principle was simple but demanding. A source had to stand higher than the destination, the channel needed a very slight and regular fall, and every change in terrain had to be surveyed and built into the route. The Gier aqueduct near Lyon shows the siphon solution particularly clearly; Pont du Gard shows the contrasting bridge-aqueduct approach.
Gravity determined the aqueduct’s route
A Roman aqueduct was not a level pipeline. Water entered at a higher elevation and flowed toward a lower destination under gravity. The engineering challenge was to preserve enough fall for movement while avoiding a slope so steep that water would scour the channel, damage its waterproof lining, or become difficult to control.

That is an exceptionally gentle descent: over many kilometres, a small difference in elevation supplied the energy for continuous flow.

SIARG explains that the water had to move calmly. In its translated wording, “The water must flow slowly, calmly, so as not to damage the coating.” The coating was a waterproof mortar, generally made with lime and crushed tile, applied to the masonry channel. The gradient, channel shape, lining, and maintenance access therefore worked as one hydraulic system rather than as separate architectural details.
Most of an aqueduct was underground or low to the ground
Modern photographs often make Roman aqueducts look like long rows of monumental arches. In practice, the visible arcade was usually only the portion that needed to be elevated. A route could be placed in a shallow trench, buried beneath the ground, driven through a hill in a tunnel, carried on a low retaining wall, or supported by bridges and arches for a particular obstacle.
For the Gier aqueduct, SIARG estimates that aerial substructures account for only about 5 percent of the route. The remaining length followed the landscape in less conspicuous forms. This distribution matters because it explains how an aqueduct could cover many tens of kilometres without requiring a continuous stone viaduct.

Surveyors selected a line that connected the spring, intermediate structures, and city reservoirs while maintaining the required descent. Every valley, ridge, and change in ground level could force a different construction method, but the water still followed the same basic rule: its total destination had to be lower than its source.
Two ways Roman engineers crossed a valley
| Feature | Bridge-aqueduct | Inverted siphon |
|---|---|---|
| Water path | An open or covered channel remains elevated on walls, bridges, or arches. | Water descends into sealed, pressurized pipes, crosses the low point, and rises on the opposite side. |
| Best terrain fit | A valley that can be spanned while keeping a practical channel height and alignment. | A depression too deep or broad for a feasible bridge-canal. |
| Representative example | Pont du Gard on the Nîmes aqueduct. | The Yzeron/Beaunant crossing on the Gier aqueduct. |
| Why gravity still works | The channel itself continuously descends toward the destination. | The receiving reservoir is lower than the starting reservoir, so the complete route still loses elevation. |
There was no universal depth or cost threshold that automatically dictated one solution. The choice depended on the valley’s width and depth, the available building materials, the required alignment, and the practical effort of constructing and maintaining the crossing. The sources establish the contrast between the two methods, not a single numerical rule for choosing between them.

How an inverted siphon moved water across a depression
The word “siphon” can be misleading because it may suggest a hand pump or a device that lifts water above its source. Roman aqueduct siphons were inverted siphons, also called forced or pressure conduits. They used hydrostatic pressure in a sealed system, with gravity providing the overall energy.
- Entry reservoir: Water arrived at a reservoir on the high side of the valley. The reservoir regulated the flow into the pressure conduit.
- Downward leg: The water descended through a sealed pipe. As the pipe dropped, the water’s pressure increased.
- Valley crossing: Lead-pipe conduits and other forced pipes carried the water across the valley floor or along a low bridge. Because the conduit was closed, atmospheric pressure did not interrupt the flow.
- Upward leg: The pipe climbed the opposite slope. Pressure pushed water upward, but only to a level below the water surface in the entry reservoir.
- Receiving reservoir: Water discharged into a reservoir lower than the starting one. From there, an ordinary gravity channel could continue toward the city.
Lyon’s Archives describes this arrangement through the principle of communicating vessels: connected vessels settle at related water levels when pressure and elevation are balanced. The pipe does not create energy or raise water above its original level. The loss of elevation between the two reservoirs supplies the driving head, while the sealed conduit allows the route to dip and rise around the terrain.
A pressure crossing also required careful construction. Leaks, weak joints, or trapped air could interrupt the flow or damage the conduit. Reservoirs provided controlled transitions between the open channel and the forced pipes, and the siphon bridges and supports kept the pipes aligned through the valley.
The Gier aqueduct and the Yzeron valley
The Gier aqueduct carried water toward Lugdunum, modern Lyon. SIARG describes a route about 86 kilometres long, with a total elevation difference of 105 metres, an average gradient of 1.1 metres per kilometre, and an estimated flow of 15,000 cubic metres per day. SIARG says construction is thought to have ended around the middle of the first century CE; the date and flow should be treated as institutional estimates rather than exact measurements.
Several deep valleys near Lyon required more than a conventional channel on a low wall. At Yzeron, the aqueduct used a siphon between reservoirs together with a siphon bridge. SIARG describes the valley as almost 3 kilometres wide and approximately 140 metres deep. It reports a 123-metre drop between the receiving reservoir and the siphon bridge.

That crossing illustrates why a pressure conduit could be preferable to a giant arcade. SIARG explains that avoiding the siphon would have required a bridge roughly as high as three Ponts du Gard stacked one above another. This is the local heritage authority’s explanatory comparison, not a separate structural measurement of a proposed bridge.
The Yzeron siphon is identified by SIARG as the largest of the four siphons along the Gier aqueduct. Jean Burdy’s study of the Gier siphon bridges also supports the interpretation of these structures as inverted-siphon crossings. Separately, the Archives de Lyon reports nine siphons across the city’s four identified aqueduct networks. That city-wide figure must not be confused with the four siphons attributed to the Gier route.
Pont du Gard shows the bridge-aqueduct alternative
Pont du Gard was built in the first century CE as part of the Nîmes aqueduct. The official Pont du Gard institution describes a route of about 50 kilometres from a spring near Uzès to Nîmes, with an average gradient of 25 centimetres per kilometre. It estimates a daily flow of 30,000 to 40,000 cubic metres and says the aqueduct supplied Nîmes for five centuries.
At the Gardon valley, the water channel remained high on a massive stone arcade. The arches supported the channel at the elevation needed to preserve the aqueduct’s very slight overall descent. The monument’s official description states that this 25-centimetre-per-kilometre gradient was among the lowest achieved at the time and carried the estimated daily volume by gravity.
Pont du Gard is therefore a useful visual counterexample to the Gier siphon. In one case, masonry arches keep the channel above the valley; in the other, sealed pipes carry water down into and back out of a deep depression. Both are gravity systems, and neither represents a universal Roman design. Engineers changed the form of each section to fit the local ground.

Why the water did not simply stop at the valley floor
An open channel cannot climb a hill after descending into a valley; its free surface would stop at the lowest point. An inverted siphon changes the boundary conditions by enclosing the water. The downstream pipe is already full, and pressure transmitted through the water allows the column to rise on the far side.
The rise is limited by the starting water level and by the pressure the conduit and its joints can withstand. The far reservoir therefore had to be lower than the upstream reservoir. If engineers tried to deliver water to a higher elevation than the source, gravity alone could not do it; a separate power source would be required, and Roman aqueduct siphons were not pumps.
This distinction also explains why the reservoirs were essential. They stabilized the water level at each end, connected the ordinary channel to the pressure pipes, and provided access points for inspection and maintenance. The siphon was a complete hydraulic assembly, not merely a pipe laid in the bottom of a valley.

Roman aqueduct channels were commonly masonry structures protected by waterproof mortar. A gentle gradient reduced turbulence and protected the lining, while the channel’s cross-section controlled the depth and velocity of the water. Route sections could be buried for protection, tunneled through hills, or placed on retaining walls when those options were more economical than a high bridge.

Maintenance access was part of the original planning. Inspection points, reservoirs, and exposed structures let workers clear sediment, repair mortar, and replace damaged pipe sections. A system that carried water continuously over decades could not depend on a one-time construction effort; its hydraulic gradient had to remain reliable as the channel aged.
Common misconceptions, corrected
- “Roman aqueducts were all arches.” No. Arches were used where elevation required them. On the Gier route, SIARG estimates that exposed aerial works represent only about 5 percent of the total length.
- “A siphon pumped water uphill.” No. An inverted siphon used pressure in a sealed conduit. Water rose on the far side only because the receiving reservoir remained below the starting reservoir.
- “Every valley had the same solution.” No. A bridge-aqueduct, tunnel, buried channel, retaining wall, or siphon could be selected for different terrain.
- “The four Gier siphons are the same as Lyon’s nine siphons.” No. Four refers to the Gier aqueduct; nine is the Archives de Lyon count across four aqueduct networks serving the city.
- “The published Gier figures are exact modern surveys.” SIARG presents the route length, gradient, flow, and construction date as estimates or approximations. They should be quoted with those qualifications.
What the two case studies reveal
The Gier and Nîmes systems show that Roman aqueduct engineering was a continuous exercise in managing elevation. Gier’s estimated 86-kilometre route lost only about 105 metres overall, yet it encountered valleys where preserving an open channel would have demanded extreme structures. The Yzeron inverted siphon let the route descend, cross, and rise again while maintaining a lower final level.
Pont du Gard demonstrates the alternative when a high crossing was practical. Its 25-centimetre-per-kilometre average gradient and estimated 30,000–40,000 cubic metres per day show how little slope was needed when the route and channel were carefully designed. The arches are visually dominant, but they are one specialized part of a roughly 50-kilometre system.

Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- The source had to be higher than the destination, and the channel followed a slight, regular downhill fall.
- Most aqueduct length could be underground, tunneled, or carried on low walls rather than monumental arches.
- An inverted siphon crossed a deep valley through sealed, pressurized pipes between two reservoirs.
- The water could rise on the far side of a siphon, but not above the upstream water level.
- The Gier aqueduct’s Yzeron crossing is a major siphon example; Pont du Gard is a bridge-aqueduct example.
