Coolify can replace an application container without first stopping the current one. For eligible Nixpacks, Railpack, Static, Dockerfile and Docker Image applications, it starts a replacement, waits for a configured or image-provided health check when available, and removes the old container only after the replacement is considered ready.
That sequence is not an automatic zero-downtime guarantee. Readiness checks, graceful shutdown, backward-compatible releases, persistent storage and deployment topology all determine whether users actually experience an uninterrupted service.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What a rolling update means in Coolify
A rolling update keeps the current container serving while Coolify starts a new container from the next revision or image. The two containers overlap for part of the deployment. If the replacement becomes ready, traffic can move to it and the old container is stopped and removed. If the replacement fails its readiness check, Coolify can discard it and leave the healthy current container running.
This application-level path applies when the application type supports overlapping containers and no configuration requires the old container to be removed first. It is different from simply restarting a process: a restart creates an interruption unless another healthy instance is already serving requests.

Coolify’s documentation explicitly warns that rolling updates do not guarantee zero downtime. A passing container health check also does not, by itself, prove that users experienced a zero-downtime transition. The application must be ready for real traffic and safe to run beside the previous release.
The replacement sequence, step by step
- Coolify prepares the replacement. It builds or pulls the requested image and generates the configuration for the new container.
- The new container starts. The current container remains in place while the replacement initializes.
- Coolify evaluates readiness. If a Coolify health check or image health check exists, Coolify waits for it to pass. Without a health check, a process that starts successfully is treated as ready.
- A failed replacement is removed. If the new container remains unhealthy, Coolify can remove it and preserve the currently healthy container.
- The old container is retired. Once the replacement is considered ready, Coolify stops and removes the previous container.
Startup success is weaker than application readiness. A process may have opened its port while migrations are still running, caches are cold, credentials have not been validated, or a required database, queue or third-party dependency is unavailable. Without a meaningful check, Coolify may stop the old container before those failures become visible.
Which applications can overlap?
Rolling replacement is available for eligible Nixpacks, Railpack, Static, Dockerfile and Docker Image applications when the old and new containers can coexist on the host. Coolify reports rolling updates as unsupported when a setting makes simultaneous containers impossible.
| Condition | Effect on deployment | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Host-published port | The old container may have to release the port before the new one can bind it, forcing stop-then-start behavior. | Port mappings in the application’s network settings. |
| Consistent container naming | Both containers cannot use the same fixed name, so overlap is disabled. | Whether a fixed naming option is enabled. |
| Custom container name | A user-specified name can prevent Coolify from creating a second container beside it. | Custom name configuration and deployment logs. |
| Custom IP or IPv6 address | The address cannot be assigned to both old and new containers at once. | Static IP and IPv6 settings. |
| Pull-request preview deployment | Preview deployments can use a stop-then-start path rather than the normal rolling sequence. | Whether the deployment is for a preview environment. |
An optional generated Container Name Prefix can include a deployment-specific timestamp and still allow rolling updates. If Coolify says rolling updates are unsupported, inspect the deployment log rather than assuming the application failed its health check.
Health checks are readiness gates, not just process checks
Configure a check that remains failing until the application can serve an important request correctly. A check that returns HTTP 200 from a route which does no dependency or initialization work can turn traffic over too early.

Dashboard HTTP checks
A dashboard HTTP check runs inside the application container. The final image therefore needs curl or wget. Use the container’s internal listening port, not a host-published port, and point the check at an endpoint representing actual readiness. For example, an endpoint might verify that startup tasks have completed and that essential dependencies are reachable before returning success.
Keep the endpoint lightweight and deterministic. It should not perform destructive writes or depend on a user session. If the application has separate web and worker processes, check the process that must receive user requests and monitor worker readiness separately where necessary.
Dockerfile HEALTHCHECK
For Dockerfile applications, a HEALTHCHECK instruction travels with the image. Coolify’s documentation shows an example using curl --fail http://localhost:3000/health, with a 30-second interval, a 5-second timeout, a 20-second start period and three retries. Those values are documentation examples, not universal requirements; adjust them to the application’s measured startup and response characteristics.
The start period prevents normal initialization from immediately consuming all retries. The timeout limits each probe, while the retry count determines how many failed probes are tolerated. Set values long enough for expected cold starts but short enough to reject a genuinely broken release before the old container is unnecessarily displaced.
How routing changes during the update
Coolify Proxy uses Traefik in the documented setup. Unhealthy containers can be removed from routing, so a failed replacement does not have to receive user requests. If every container for an application is unhealthy, Traefik may return 404 Not Found or No available server.

Routing health and application health are related but not identical. A container can pass a shallow HTTP probe while returning errors on authenticated routes, failing writes, or timing out on a dependency. Conversely, a probe aimed at the wrong internal port can mark a working application unhealthy and keep it out of rotation. Test the exact address, port and path from inside the container environment.
Graceful shutdown protects in-flight work
When Coolify retires the old container, it sends a termination signal and waits for the configured stop grace period. In the dashboard, open Advanced > Operations and set Stop Grace Period to the maximum time the application needs after receiving that signal. Coolify documents a default of 30 seconds and accepts values from 1 to 3600 seconds.
A longer value only provides time; it does not make an application graceful automatically. The process must stop accepting new requests, allow active requests to finish or fail safely, close connections and exit when cleanup is complete. HTTP servers, queue workers and schedulers should all handle the termination signal explicitly.
Choose the value from observed worst-case work, such as the longest normal request or job, with a safety margin. If shutdown exceeds the grace period, the container can still be killed while it owns active work, producing duplicate jobs, interrupted responses or partially completed operations.
Compose and Swarm use different update paths
Docker Compose applications do not use Coolify’s application-level rolling-update sequence. Coolify runs docker compose up, and Compose reconciles the services declared in the file. Whether instances overlap, how health checks are interpreted and when a service is recreated depend on that Compose definition and the application itself.

For Docker Swarm targets, Coolify uses docker stack deploy. Swarm controls replica replacement and routing according to the stack and service configuration. Replica counts, update order, failure actions, health checks and endpoint behavior therefore determine availability.
| Deployment type | Who controls replacement? | Readiness and failure behavior | Main availability dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eligible Coolify application | Coolify’s application-level sequence. | Coolify can wait for a health check and retain the old container when the replacement is unhealthy. | Overlap-compatible settings, readiness endpoint and graceful shutdown. |
| Docker Compose | Compose reconciliation through docker compose up. |
Defined by the Compose file, service health checks and recreation behavior. | Compose service topology and application design. |
| Docker Swarm stack | Swarm through docker stack deploy. |
Controlled by Swarm update settings, replicas, health checks and routing. | Stack definition and replica capacity. |
Design the application for overlapping releases
During a rolling update, two releases can execute at the same time. The new version must therefore remain compatible with the old one for the entire overlap window.
- Database migrations: Prefer expand-and-contract changes. Add structures first, deploy code that understands both schemas, migrate data, and remove obsolete structures only after old instances are gone.
- APIs: Keep request and response formats compatible so old and new containers can serve clients concurrently.
- Queues and workers: Make job handlers tolerate messages produced by either release. A scheduler may briefly run in both versions, so use locking or idempotency where duplicate execution is possible.
- Caches and sessions: Use shared stores and compatible key formats. Avoid putting sessions only in one container’s memory.
- Shared files: Store uploads and other required files on persistent volumes or external storage accessible to the replacement.
A container’s writable filesystem is replaceable. Data written only there disappears when Coolify removes that container. Put databases and uploads in managed services or persistent volumes, and ensure those volumes and mounts are present in the new container definition.
Validate a deployment before calling it zero downtime
- Build a real readiness endpoint. Make it fail while startup is incomplete and pass only when the application can serve a representative request.
- Test termination handling. Confirm that the process receives the termination signal, stops accepting new work, completes or safely abandons in-flight work and exits within the chosen Stop Grace Period.
- Deploy a compatible change. Use a release whose schema, API, queue, cache, session and file behavior works with both versions.
- Exercise a critical route continuously. Send repeated requests while the deployment runs, including authenticated reads and writes when those are central to the service.
- Read Deployment Logs. Look for messages equivalent to Rolling update started, New container is healthy and Rolling update completed.
- Check application work afterward. Verify database writes, background jobs, sessions, uploads and persistent data, not just the presence of a running container.
Container overlap proves that the replacement path operated. Only successful user requests and application work throughout the transition establish that the deployment was effectively interruption-free.

The replacement is marked unhealthy
- Read the new container’s logs for startup exceptions, migration failures and dependency errors.
- Confirm that
curlorwgetexists when the dashboard HTTP check requires it. - Use the internal listening port and the correct path.
- Verify that the endpoint returns success only after initialization is complete.
- Allow enough start period, timeout and retries for normal startup, but not so much that a broken release remains in contention indefinitely.
Requests fail after the replacement is healthy
Make the readiness check stricter so it exercises the dependency or operation that is failing. Then inspect graceful-shutdown behavior on the old container. It may be closing connections too aggressively, continuing to accept work after receiving its termination signal, or exceeding the stop grace period.

Check whether the data was stored in the container’s writable layer instead of a persistent volume or managed service. Review volume mounts in the generated configuration and confirm that the replacement has access to the same storage. For jobs, check for duplicate schedulers, non-idempotent handlers and termination during active work.
What deployment history can and cannot tell you
Coolify’s deployment history records the source revision, image build or pull, generated configuration and container actions. A failed source build does not replace the currently running application. Failures after a successful build depend on the selected replacement path and its health-check configuration: an eligible rolling deployment may retain the old container, while a stop-then-start path can leave an interruption before the replacement is usable.
Use the history together with proxy responses, application logs, health-check status and request monitoring. A log entry saying that a container started is not evidence that the service was ready, and a health entry is not evidence that every user operation succeeded.
Quick Recap
Practical zero-downtime checklist
- Use an application type and network configuration that permit old and new containers to coexist.
- Remove host ports, fixed names and custom addresses that force stop-then-start behavior unless they are essential.
- Define a readiness check using the internal port and a meaningful endpoint.
- Ensure the check tools are present in the final image.
- Set start period, timeout and retries for the application’s real startup profile.
- Implement signal handling and choose a Stop Grace Period between 1 and 3600 seconds; Coolify’s documented default is 30 seconds.
- Keep schemas, APIs, queues, caches, sessions and shared files compatible during overlap.
- Move persistent data out of the replaceable container filesystem.
- Test critical requests, writes, jobs and sessions during an actual deployment.
- For Compose or Swarm, configure the update behavior in the Compose or stack definition rather than assuming Coolify’s application-level sequence applies.
