Short answer: A rocket launch can disturb the ionosphere, and scientific instruments have measured launch-related changes in GNSS signals and other radio propagation. That does not mean every launch makes phone navigation inaccurate or knocks consumer satellite internet offline. The strongest evidence concerns measurable changes in the ionized upper atmosphere; the reviewed studies do not document a routine, user-visible outage of a named satellite-internet service.

Why a launch can affect radio signals

The ionosphere is the electrically charged part of the upper atmosphere. Its free electrons and ions alter how radio waves travel, including the signals used by global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), shortwave links and very-low-frequency (VLF) communications. The amount and distribution of plasma change naturally with sunlight, season, local time and geomagnetic conditions.

Rocket exhaust changes local plasma

Rocket exhaust injects water vapor, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and other chemicals into an environment that normally contains relatively thin plasma. Chemical reactions can reduce the local electron density. A launch therefore creates a temporary disturbance along and around the vehicle’s ascent path rather than a uniform change over an entire continent.

Ascent waves can also disturb the ionosphere

The vehicle and its exhaust produce acoustic and other pressure waves. As those waves propagate upward, they can modify ionospheric electron density. GPS carrier-phase measurements and GNSS total-electron-content (TEC) estimates are sensitive enough to detect such changes even when a person using a phone notices nothing.

Natural Sporadic-E layers are a separate phenomenon

Sporadic-E is a naturally occurring, relatively thin layer of enhanced ionization. NASA describes these layers as capable of disrupting some radio communications and adding uncertainty to GPS-related measurements. A Sporadic-E event should not be labeled a rocket effect unless observations tie it to a specific launch; the layer can appear without any launch at all.

What launch studies have actually measured

The following results use different instruments, frequencies and observation geometries. They are evidence that launches can perturb radio propagation, not a set of expected effects for every mission.

Rocket Lab Electron, 22 March 2021 GNSS-derived slant and vertical TEC at Chatham Islands ground stations Maximum measured vertical TEC decrease of 2.7 TECU; the model produced a comparable 2.6 TECU decrease (Bowden et al., Space Weather, 2023) A launch-associated depletion was observed and modeled in one case. TECU is an ionospheric measurement, not a direct phone-position error or service-downtime value.
Space Shuttle STS-125 ascent GPS carrier-phase data Phase changes consistent with ionospheric disturbances generated by acoustic waves during ascent (Haase et al., Geophysical Journal International, 2013) Shows that launch-generated waves can be detected through GPS phase observations; it does not establish a routine navigation outage.

Rocket-plume propagation model, 2021 Over-the-horizon HF/shortwave calculations Predicted effects that varied with frequency, elevation angle, solar activity, time of day and season (Ma et al., Radio Science, 2021) A modeled sensitivity study for HF radio, not an observation of consumer satellite-internet interruption.
NASA discussion of Sporadic-E, 2025 Ionospheric science and radio-communication analysis Sporadic-E can disrupt some communications and contribute to GPS uncertainty Describes a variable natural layer. It is not evidence that a particular launch caused a Sporadic-E episode.

Can a rocket launch affect GPS reception?

Yes, in principle and occasionally in measurements; no, not as a demonstrated universal loss of GPS service. GNSS receivers estimate position from timing and carrier signals that have crossed the ionosphere. A change in electron content changes the propagation delay and can alter carrier phase. Receivers and correction systems are designed to tolerate much of this variation, but a sufficiently structured disturbance can increase measurement noise or uncertainty.

What the 2.7 TECU result means

The Electron study’s 2.7 TECU maximum vertical decrease is the largest value reported for that launch’s analyzed observations. One TECU represents 1016 electrons per square metre along a vertical column. The number describes the state of the ionosphere at the observing region; it does not translate by itself into “a phone will be off by X metres.” Position error depends on satellite geometry, receiver quality, correction data, signal frequency, the line of sight through the disturbance and the receiver’s algorithms.

What a user might notice

If a launch-related disturbance reaches a receiver’s signal paths, possible symptoms include a slower first fix, a brief increase in reported uncertainty, a jump in a track, or loss of a marginal signal. Those symptoms have many more common causes, including buildings, trees, multipath reflections, poor antenna view, interference, receiver faults and ordinary ionospheric or atmospheric variability. A launch time alone is not proof of causation.

Why most people will not see a dramatic change

The disturbance is spatially limited and the launch vehicle moves quickly. A receiver may not view the affected region at the same time, and navigation solutions combine several satellites at different elevations and azimuths. Civil receivers also use error checking and, where available, augmentation or network corrections. A measurable perturbation in a scientific time series can therefore coexist with a normal-looking position on a phone.

Can a rocket launch knock out satellite internet?

The reviewed evidence does not document an observed outage or quantified, user-visible degradation of a named consumer satellite-internet service during or after a rocket launch. It is therefore not justified to treat a launch as a routine cause of broadband disconnection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the mechanisms are different from GPS

Satellite-internet links use particular microwave bands, beam shapes, coding schemes and network paths. A launch plume may perturb a small region of the ionosphere, while a broadband terminal’s path to its satellite may pass elsewhere or use a frequency and geometry that respond weakly. Modern systems can also change satellites, beams or routes when a link is marginal. None of those design features guarantees immunity, but they prevent a GNSS observation from being converted into a broadband-outage prediction.

What can look like launch-related downtime

  • A planned network or ground-station maintenance window coinciding with the launch.
  • Rain fade or other weather attenuation at the terminal or gateway.
  • A blocked antenna view, power interruption, overheating or local Wi-Fi problem.
  • Radio-frequency interference unrelated to the launch.
  • Normal satellite handover or a temporary service-area limitation.

To claim a launch caused an interruption, an operator would need time-synchronized service telemetry, the terminal’s link statistics and an atmospheric or propagation analysis that excludes these alternatives. The cited studies do not provide that consumer-service evidence.

Why radio-band findings cannot be mixed together

Frequency and path geometry determine how strongly a disturbance matters. GNSS observations measure TEC or phase along satellite-to-ground paths. The GSLV-D6 result concerns VLF amplitude in a lower-ionosphere propagation path. The 2021 plume paper models HF/shortwave, where refraction and reflection depend strongly on frequency and ionospheric layering. A 3 dB VLF change is not a 3 dB change in a GPS or broadband signal, and an HF model result is not an outage forecast for a satellite terminal.

Elevation angle matters because a low-angle path traverses more ionospheric material than a near-vertical one. Solar activity, season and local time alter the background plasma into which the plume or acoustic wave is introduced. The same rocket and payload could therefore produce different radio signatures on different days or at different observing sites.

What to do if GPS behaves oddly during a launch

  1. Record the time and location. Note the launch time, your approximate coordinates, the device, the application and the reported accuracy. A timestamp makes comparison with other receivers possible.
  2. Move to an open view of the sky. Step away from roofs, walls, vehicles and tall vegetation. This tests whether blockage or multipath—not the launch—is responsible.
  3. Check more than one device or constellation. If only one handset or receiver shows a problem, a local hardware or software issue is more likely. If several independent receivers change together, an environmental cause becomes more plausible.
  4. Compare with a known-good source. Check an official service-status page, a nearby reference receiver or a recorded track. Do not infer an ionospheric event from one map application’s displayed dot.
  5. Wait and observe recovery. Note whether the error clears as satellites change position. A persistent fault after the launch window points toward equipment, obstruction or network conditions rather than a short-lived ascent disturbance.

How to investigate a suspected satellite-internet problem

  1. Separate the link from the local network. Test the terminal’s own status and signal indicators, then test a wired or nearby device. A working terminal with failing Wi-Fi is not an atmospheric outage.
  2. Check power, weather and obstruction. Log rain, heavy clouds, snow, wind movement and any object entering the antenna’s view. These are common explanations for short interruptions.
  3. Compare the exact time with operator records. A launch notice is only a correlation. Look for a maintenance notice or regional incident covering the same minutes.
  4. Preserve diagnostics. Save disconnect times, signal levels, modem logs and terminal coordinates. Without those records, a later attribution to an ionospheric effect is speculative.

How to read claims about launch-related GPS or radio effects

  • Ask what was measured. TEC, GPS phase, VLF amplitude and HF propagation are different observables.
  • Check whether the result was observed or modeled. A simulation can identify sensitivities without showing that users experienced them.
  • Look for the launch, date and observation path. The Electron and GSLV-D6 numbers belong to specific events and sites, not to all launches.
  • Keep units in context. TECU and decibels describe physical or signal changes; neither is a universal GPS-error or downtime metric.
  • Demand a user-impact measurement. A claim about consumer service requires receiver accuracy, outage duration or operator telemetry—not only an ionospheric plot.

What is established—and what is not

Established observations show that rocket exhaust and launch-generated waves can perturb ionospheric plasma, and that GNSS instruments can detect the resulting changes. The Electron case measured a 2.7 TECU maximum vertical decrease, with a 2.6 TECU modeled value; the shuttle study detected acoustic-wave effects in GPS phase; and the GSLV-D6 study found an approximately 3 dB VLF perturbation. NASA’s explanation of Sporadic-E adds an important natural source of radio and GPS uncertainty.

Not established by these sources is a routine loss of GPS reception for ordinary users, a universal position error associated with a given TEC change, or a consumer satellite-internet outage caused by a launch. Treat a launch as one possible contributor to unusual radio behavior, document the timing and conditions, and avoid attributing a service failure without measurements that connect the event to the user’s actual signal path.
