Robot vacuum tests usually combine measured dirt pickup with navigation, obstacle handling and day-to-day usability. The details differ by publisher: each chooses its own debris, surfaces, test room and scoring weights. That means a score is meaningful within the reviewer’s method, but it is not a standardized industry grade.
What a robot vacuum test is designed to measure
A useful test separates several questions that can otherwise get blurred together: how much debris a robot collects, whether it covers a room efficiently, how it handles obstacles, how well it mops, and how demanding it is to own. A strong result in one category does not guarantee strength in another. Pickup measurements, for example, do not by themselves show whether the robot will avoid a cable or finish a room before its battery runs down.
Reviewers also use different kinds of evidence. Some weigh what the robot collects from a prepared patch; others assess remaining dirt, run a mapped course, or observe a robot in a home. These are different tests, not competing measurements on a single universal scale.
How reviewers measure dirt pickup
Fixed debris on hard floors and carpet
Tom’s Guide describes a controlled pickup test using 20 grams each of Cheerios, kitty litter and pet hair. It scatters each material separately on hardwood, weighs the debris collected in the robot’s dustbin, and repeats the tests on low-pile carpet. The collected amount is converted to a cleaning-performance percentage. These figures describe Tom’s Guide’s protocol, not a standard used by all reviewers. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 robot-vacuum guide was current when accessed October 8, 2026.

Consumer NZ and CHOICE use sand on hard floors and carpet, with differences in their setups. Consumer NZ tests hard-floor pickup on vinyl for up to 25 minutes or until the cleaning cycle ends, then weighs the collected dirt. CHOICE also runs a hard-floor sand test for up to 25 minutes or until the cycle ends, but places furniture-like objects in the room to make the setup more home-like. CHOICE additionally reports a six-minute embedded cat-hair test on carpet, judged by how much hair remains. Consumer NZ’s method was updated in April 2026; CHOICE’s method was accessed October 8, 2026.
Deep carpet cleaning, crevices and suction measurements
Vacuum Wars uses several bench tests rather than relying on a single pickup score. For deep carpet cleaning, it embeds sand in medium-pile carpet, runs the robot for a fixed time, and weighs the dustbin before and after; the test is typically repeated three times. For hard-floor crevices, it embeds coffee in grooves that are 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch deep and scores how many the robot clears. Additional pickup checks can reveal problems with particular debris sizes or fine particles.
It also measures airflow and suction on maximum power using an anemometer and manometer. The suction reading is taken at the brushhead housing, not at the motor. That distinction matters: a bench reading at one point in the airflow path is not a direct measurement of the amount of dirt a robot will collect in every room. Vacuum Wars’ methodology page was last updated November 4, 2025. See Vacuum Wars’ test descriptions.

Edges and pet hair
Pickup away from the middle of a test patch may be assessed separately. Consumer NZ and CHOICE describe corner or edge tests, while CHOICE also includes its embedded cat-hair assessment. Those results address specific situations; they should not be read as a complete measure of performance on every carpet, hair type or room layout.
How navigation and obstacle avoidance are tested
Home use and fixed layouts
Tom’s Guide follows its controlled debris tests with real-world use in a tester’s home, observing navigation, obstacle avoidance and coverage over weeks of testing. This can show behavior in a lived-in setting that a bare test patch would miss, although the room and obstacles are not the same as every reader’s home.
Vacuum Wars instead maps the same floor plan, furniture and square footage for each robot. It assesses cleaning speed, battery efficiency and coverage at low, typical and maximum power settings. Its final navigation score averages navigation efficiency, battery efficiency and coverage. When a robot has obstacle sensors, it runs five obstacle tests: four with three object categories each, followed by a combined course with 24 objects. The methodology also describes a single-threshold climb test that starts at 19 mm and increases in quarter-inch increments, about 6 mm. These are Vacuum Wars’ test conditions, not a guarantee that a robot will handle every threshold or obstacle at home.

Mopping methods vary in stains, cleaning settings and what counts as success. Consumer NZ spreads coffee, red wine, a mud mixture, soy sauce and jam on laminate, then evaluates stain removal using the robot’s most intense routine. It also assesses handling of the water tank and pads.
CHOICE uses the same named stain categories with the best available cleaning and water-flow settings. It checks whether the robot avoids carpet while mopping; soil spread onto carpet can lower the mopping score. Its setup therefore considers both stain removal and whether the robot protects a surface that should not be wet.

Vacuum Wars uses nine circular coffee stains and five grape-juice stains, varying the amounts with a syringe and assigning points according to difficulty. It runs four passes, awards more credit for stains removed earlier, repeats the test at maximum and low or medium power, and averages the two scores. Separately, it measures water left behind by weighing a paper towel before and after wiping a 4-by-4-foot area. The method distinguishes visible stain removal from residual moisture rather than treating them as the same outcome.

CHOICE evaluates more than cleaning. Its checks include dirt-receptacle emptying, app clarity and lag, network connection, map creation and saving, scheduling, setting changes, and cleaning logs that report paths, obstacles, time and battery use. Its published overall-score weights put 30% on ease of use, including official apps; the other weights are 20% hard-floor pickup, 15% carpet pickup, 10% corners and edges, 10% pet hair, and 15% mopping. Those percentages explain CHOICE’s priorities, not a universal formula.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConsumer NZ runs each robot from fully charged until the motor stops and records runtime. It also considers mopping setup and washing the pads. These ownership checks can matter when two robots collect similar amounts of dirt but differ in the effort required to set up or maintain them.
Vacuum Wars says its ranking algorithm also incorporates features, Amazon ratings and price. As a result, a ranking that includes those factors is not simply a measure of cleaning performance. Vacuum Wars states: “The first and most important thing to know about Vacuum Wars testing is that we purchase all the robot vacuums we test ourselves and never do sponsored reviews of any kind.” That is Vacuum Wars’ statement about its own practices, from its methodology page last updated November 4, 2025; it should not be generalized to other reviewers.
Why scores from different reviewers do not line up
Two reviewers can reach different results without either necessarily being wrong: they may use different debris, surfaces, rooms, run times or scoring priorities. Before comparing scores, check what each test actually rewards.
- Debris and surface: Sand, cereal, litter, coffee and hair expose different pickup challenges. Carpet pile and hard-floor types also vary.
- Measurement: A weighed dustbin, percentage collected, remaining hair, visual stain assessment, airflow reading and timed run answer different questions.
- Test environment: A prepared patch or fixed map is easier to reproduce; a lived-in home may reveal behavior that a controlled course misses.
- Navigation: Look for disclosed measures such as coverage, cleaning speed, battery efficiency, obstacle handling, threshold tests and repeated runs.
- Mopping: Stain types, cleaning passes, water left behind, carpet avoidance and pad or tank handling all affect what a result means.
- Scoring: Check whether a reviewer weights usability, apps, features, price or retailer ratings alongside cleaning performance.
For context, RTINGS describes a general vacuum-testing process in which review units are bought through ordinary retail channels, tests are designed for comparable results, and a second tester peer-reviews data before writing. Its listed measures include maintenance, recurring costs, battery, pickup, suction, airflow, noise, stains and water. That page covers vacuums generally, not a robot-specific protocol, so it should not be treated as one. RTINGS’ general vacuum methodology was accessed October 8, 2026.
