Robot lawn mowers stay in their assigned area either by sensing a perimeter wire or by enforcing a virtual boundary created with positioning, mapping, and onboard sensors. Depending on the model, navigation may combine wire signals, satellite positioning such as RTK, cameras, computer vision, and LiDAR. The mower maps or receives zones, chooses a coverage pattern, cuts as it travels, returns to its dock to recharge, and reacts to detected obstacles. Those abilities are model-specific: manufacturer descriptions are not independent proof that every mower will detect every object or operate safely in every yard.
The operating cycle: from boundary to finished lawn
A robot mower repeats a controlled cycle rather than simply driving until its battery is empty. The exact software, sensors, cutting deck, and return-to-dock logic differ by product, but the reader-facing sequence is consistent: define the area, establish position, cover the zone, cut while moving, and recharge when required.
1. Defining where the mower may work
Traditional systems use a perimeter wire carrying a weak electrical signal. The mower detects that signal and treats the wire as a no-cross line. Installers can route the wire around flower beds, ponds, play areas, trees, or other exclusions. A loop around an excluded feature creates an “island,” so the mower remains in the grass corridor between the outer boundary and the island wire.
Recommended Free Tools
Wire-free systems create a virtual perimeter in software. The boundary can be drawn during app setup or generated while the mower maps the property, depending on the model. Positioning and onboard sensing then keep the machine inside the saved zone. Some products retain a physical-wire option for locations where satellite reception is unreliable.

2. Locating the mower and building a map
After the work area is defined, the mower needs a position estimate. A basic wire-guided machine can use the boundary and guide wires to infer where it is. More advanced products combine satellite positioning, map data, cameras, vision processing, and other sensors. Supported apps may let you divide a property into zones, set channels between areas, and mark no-go regions.
Do not assume that every mower creates a detailed map automatically. Segway describes automatic mapping for particular i-series models, while other products require a guided mapping run or manually configured boundaries. Check the exact model’s setup procedure, phone permissions, positioning accessories, and regional service requirements.
3. Planning coverage
Once the mower knows the zone, its software chooses how to traverse it. Some machines use systematic lanes or other planned paths to cover a mapped area. Others can use less structured movement, especially when operating with a simple boundary-wire layout. A product page for Segway’s H-series says the mower changes direction after reaching 100% mowing progress; that is a description of that product family, not a rule for all robot mowers.
Path planning matters because it affects visible striping, time spent in corners, the chance of repeated passes, and how efficiently the battery is used. A map can also allow different schedules for separate zones, but the number of zones, channels, and scheduling controls is model-dependent.
4. Cutting while moving
The mower’s cutting mechanism runs as it traverses the assigned area, trimming grass progressively rather than waiting for one pass to finish the entire lawn. The cut height, blade arrangement, width, motor behavior, and mowing schedule depend on the model. Do not generalize a particular blade specification, cutting pattern, or mulching behavior to the whole category; the available product information does not establish a universal design.

5. Returning to the dock and charging
When the battery needs charging, the schedule ends, or the mower detects a condition that requires a return, it navigates to its dock. Husqvarna describes three possible homeward methods on its Automower systems: a patented guide wire, the boundary wire, or onboard GPS. The guide wire is described as the fastest route in that company’s explanation. Other models may use different logic, and the sources do not establish one universal charging algorithm.
Boundary wire versus virtual boundaries
| Comparison | Wire-guided approach | Wire-free or virtual-boundary approach |
|---|---|---|
| How the edge is defined | A perimeter-wire signal sensed by the mower; additional wire can form exclusion islands. | A digital boundary based on positioning, mapping, and sometimes vision or other sensors. |
| Initial setup | Lay, secure, connect, and test the cable around the lawn and excluded areas. | Map the property in an app or during a guided run; some models need positioning infrastructure or adequate satellite reception. |
| Changing the layout | Physical changes may require lifting, moving, or extending wire and rechecking the loop. | Supported models can let you edit zones or no-go areas in software, although a remapping run may still be required. |
| Coverage constraints | Wire routing and guide-wire placement determine accessible areas and the route home. | Satellite visibility, correction data, map quality, and sensor fusion affect boundary accuracy. |
| Obstacle response | Still depends on the mower’s own bump, camera, LiDAR, or other sensors; the wire does not identify toys or animals. | Positioning defines the zone, while vision or LiDAR may supplement obstacle sensing; performance remains model-specific. |
| Best verification questions | Ask about wire length, islands, crossings, guide-wire requirements, and repair procedures. | Ask about positioning requirements, correction coverage, mapping steps, zone editing, and stated detection limits. |
Neither approach is automatically superior. A wire can be practical on a property with poor satellite coverage, while a virtual system can make layout changes easier when the model supports reliable mapping and positioning.

Boundary and guide-wire sensing
The mower detects the low-power signal in the installed cable and uses it as a geometric constraint. The boundary says where not to go; a guide wire can provide a known route through a corridor and back toward the dock. Wire systems still need careful installation: a broken connection, incorrect polarity, a wire placed too close to another run, or an accidental relocation can make the mower stop, leave an area untouched, or report a boundary fault.
Satellite positioning and RTK
Global-navigation satellite signals provide an outdoor position estimate. RTK adds correction information so a compatible receiver can calculate a much more precise position than ordinary satellite navigation. Segway describes RTK positioning in centimeter-level or few-centimeter terms on its product pages, but that language is manufacturer-specific and depends on signal visibility, correction service, obstructions, and installation. Trees, walls, narrow side passages, and roof overhangs can reduce reliability.
Cameras and computer vision
A camera-based system analyzes images to recognize lawn edges, objects, or scene features. Vision can supplement a position estimate and help distinguish an obstacle from mowable ground, but performance changes with lighting, shadows, rain, grass height, object color, and the object’s size and shape. A camera feature should not be treated as a promise to recognize every toy, cable, animal, or person.

LiDAR and sensor fusion
LiDAR measures distance using laser pulses and can add a three-dimensional view of nearby objects. Some products fuse LiDAR with RTK and vision rather than relying on one sensor alone. Segway lists a fused LiDAR, Network RTK, and vision system for its H2 product. Sensor fusion can improve robustness, but it does not remove the need to follow the manufacturer’s operating limits or supervise the mower around people and pets.

How obstacle avoidance works—and where it stops
Obstacle handling usually follows a short sequence: detect an object, reduce speed or stop, choose a new heading, and continue if the path is clear. Husqvarna says its sensors allow an Automower to detect objects, slow down, and steer away. That is a vendor description of the system’s intended behavior, not an independent safety certification.
Segway’s current H2 product page states a detection size of 0.4 inches and recognition of more than 200 obstacle types. Both figures are manufacturer specifications for that product, not an industry-wide performance result. They do not establish that every object of that size will be detected in every condition, nor that another model has the same capability.
- Remove small toys, hoses, cables, tools, clothing, and pet waste before mowing.
- Keep children and pets away during operation, even when the mower advertises obstacle detection.
- Do not assume a stationary object will be recognized if it is partly hidden by tall grass, shadow, glare, or wet foliage.
- Check whether the product has a physical stop, lift sensor, collision sensor, camera, LiDAR, or a combination; “obstacle avoidance” is not a standardized feature level.
- Use the manufacturer’s stated slopes, weather, lighting, and boundary restrictions rather than treating detection claims as permission to ignore supervision.
A practical setup process
The labels differ by app and model, but the following sequence covers the decisions an owner normally has to make.
- Survey the lawn. Mark narrow passages, steep sections, roots, ponds, loose gravel, drop-offs, flower beds, and places where people or animals enter the work area.
- Choose the boundary method. Select perimeter wire if the model requires it or if satellite visibility is poor. Select virtual boundaries only after confirming the mower supports mapping in your region and yard conditions.
- Install or create the perimeter. For wire systems, lay the cable continuously, secure it against the ground, form exclusion islands, and connect it to the charging station. For wire-free systems, follow the app’s mapping route and save the digital perimeter.
- Add guide routes or channels. If the mower uses a guide wire, route it through narrow connectors and toward the dock as specified. If the app supports channels, map those corridors and test that the mower can pass through them.
- Set zones and no-go areas. Assign separate mowing schedules where supported. Exclude play equipment, soft ground, decorative beds, and any area the mower must never enter.
- Verify positioning. For RTK or network-assisted systems, install the reference or positioning equipment with the required sky view and confirm that the app reports a usable correction or position status.
- Run a supervised test. Watch boundary approaches, tight turns, guide-wire following, island behavior, slopes, and the final return to the dock. Correct the map or wire before leaving the mower unattended.
- Prepare every mowing session. Clear loose objects, check that the dock is accessible, and review weather or operating restrictions shown by the manufacturer.
Common failures and how to diagnose them
The mower crosses or refuses the boundary
On a wire system, inspect the loop for cuts, loose connectors, crushed sections, and a cable moved by edging or animals. Confirm that the charging station reports a normal loop signal. On a virtual system, check the saved map, positioning status, correction link, and whether a newly moved object or wall blocks the sensor view.

Coverage is patchy or the mower repeats one area
Check whether the zone was mapped completely, whether a channel is too narrow, and whether the model is using a systematic pattern or a less structured search. Re-map only after correcting the physical cause; otherwise the same error can be reproduced in software.
The mower cannot find the dock
Clear grass, furniture, and stored equipment from the approach. Wire-guided models may have a disconnected or badly routed guide wire. Positioning-based models may lose satellite or correction data near walls and dense trees. Verify the dock’s required orientation and the return route in the model instructions.
Obstacle detection is inconsistent
Clean camera or LiDAR windows, mow in the lighting and weather range specified by the manufacturer, and remove objects that are too small or low to be dependable targets. Treat an inconsistent response as a reason to supervise and adjust the environment, not as evidence that the mower is safe to leave around children or pets.
What to compare before buying
- Boundary setup: physical installation, virtual mapping, or both.
- Satellite environment: open sky, tree cover, walls, side yards, and whether correction infrastructure is needed.
- Mapping controls: automatic mapping, guided mapping, zone count, channels, and no-go editing.
- Coverage behavior: systematic lanes, direction changes, scheduling controls, and how the product handles disconnected areas.
- Obstacle sensors: bump sensing, cameras, vision processing, LiDAR, and the manufacturer’s stated detection limits.
- Docking method: guide wire, boundary-wire tracking, GPS or positioning, and the conditions required for each.
- Yard geometry: narrow passages, islands, slopes, wet ground, and areas where people or pets may appear unexpectedly.
- Maintenance: wire repairs, sensor cleaning, blade replacement using only model-compatible parts, and inspection of the dock and boundary after landscaping work.
The reliable way to judge a robot mower is to match these capabilities to the physical yard, not to compare a single headline number. Wire sensing, RTK, cameras, LiDAR, mapping, and obstacle avoidance are separate capabilities that may be combined differently from one model to the next.
