Rice straw can be made into medium-density fibreboard (MDF), but the story behind that promise is more complicated than a simple wood substitute. A 2004 report examined how rice straw’s silica and surface properties might affect engineered panels; later records document production in 2020, followed by bankruptcy and a plant auction in 2026. The available sources do not establish that rice-straw MDF is currently for sale.

What the 2004 headline was about

“Rice straw: come hell or high water” was the headline of a Chemistry World news article by Bea Perks, published May 1, 2004. It covered efforts to use rice straw, an agricultural residue, in place of wood, especially in MDF. The headline’s phrase is idiomatic; the reported technical question was whether rice straw’s chemistry and physical properties made it suitable for manufactured panels.

The article distinguished MDF from particleboard. It reported that rice-straw MDF could be manufactured, while particleboard presented a more difficult materials problem. Those findings describe the reporting and plans of that period, not the present market.

Why silica mattered to panel makers

Inglesby reported that rice straw contained 11 per cent silica by dry weight, compared with 4–5 per cent in wheat straw. These were figures cited in 2004, not universal values for every crop or sample. She was investigating whether the silica contributed to difficulties in particleboard processing.

  • ●HIGHLY CUSTOMIZABLE UNFINISHED BOARD SHEETS - Aside from painting, you can glue or add embellishments to your MDF board. They’re easy to cut by hand saw or power saws ,and are also perfect for routing and engraving

Silica also attracted interest for a different reason. Inglesby, of the Agricultural Research Service’s Bioproduct Chemistry and Engineering unit, told Chemistry World: “The building industry is interested in the SiO2 because there may be potential benefits regarding flame retardancy.” That was a research possibility, not evidence that rice-straw MDF had earned fire-retardant certification.

What was claimed about moisture resistance

The 2004 article said homes built from complete rice-straw bales appeared more moisture resistant than homes built from wheat-straw bales, but the reason was unknown. That observation did not establish a measured performance advantage or its cause.

CalAg was then described as making rice-straw MDF using a patented process. Its CEO, Jerry Uhland, attributed the product’s moisture resistance to rice straw’s aquatic-plant origin, its wax composition, and a pMDI (polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) resin binder. He said the MDF was “about 35 per cent more moisture resistant than wood-based MDF.” This was a company claim reported in 2004; the article did not present independent comparative test results.

From planned production to an uncertain present

A California financing document records first MDF production in November 2020, a milestone that does not by itself show that the product remains available. Later reports describe CalPlant 1 as having declared bankruptcy and negotiating a change of ownership. A May 2026 trade report said the former Willows plant was headed to an auction scheduled for May 6–7, 2026. Taken together, these records leave current operations and sales unresolved; they do not support describing Eureka MDF as presently available.

Where rice straw has a documented practical use

Rice straw has a separate, documented role in erosion control. Caltrans includes it among materials considered for that purpose. The agency says its high silicate content helps it last longer than some other straw types and notes that it can be useful when weed-free straw is desired.

That use has practical limits. Caltrans warns that supply can be seasonal and concentrated in Northern California, and that rice straw is brittle and does not punch well into soil. Its suitability therefore depends on the location and application, as well as whether material is available when needed.

What the evidence supports—and what it does not

  • Supported: Rice straw was investigated and used as feedstock for MDF, with production recorded in 2020.
  • Supported: The 2004 report raised silica as both a possible particleboard-processing challenge and a subject of flame-retardancy interest.
  • Not established: That rice-straw MDF received fire-retardant certification, that the 2004 moisture-resistance comparison was independently verified, or that the former CalPlant facility is currently producing or selling MDF.
  • Separately documented: Rice straw is used in erosion control, subject to regional supply and handling limitations.
