Yes—in a 2024 laboratory study, researchers used electricity to convert nitrogen from air into nitrate in an aqueous system operating at room temperature. The method uses hydrogen peroxide to generate hydroxyl radicals, which supply oxygen for the reaction. The reported results are promising, but they do not show that the process is ready to make fertilizer at industrial scale.
What the researchers made—and how
Dong and colleagues studied electrochemical nitrogen oxidation: turning nitrogen into nitrate, not ammonia. Their paper, “H₂O₂-mediated electrosynthesis of nitrate from air,” appeared online in Nature Synthesis on 19 April 2024; it was published in the journal’s June 2024 issue.
In aqueous electrochemical systems, nitrogen oxidation competes with oxygen evolution, a reaction that can divert current from the desired product. The study’s approach uses hydroxyl radicals produced by hydrogen peroxide decomposition as the active oxygen source, rather than relying on the competing oxygen-evolution route.

In its electrochemical tests, Dong et al. reported a Faradaic efficiency of 25.6% and a nitrate yield of 8.3 nmol s−1 cm−2. These are laboratory-study results, not measurements of industrial output or a commercial process.

The team also investigated whether nitrogen was being activated and how the reaction worked, using in situ electrochemical mass spectrometry, gas-phase infrared spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. These methods support the study’s validation and mechanistic analysis; they do not establish a universal testing protocol for the wider field.
How this route differs from established nitrogen processing
Conventional nitrogen processing uses the Haber–Bosch route to make ammonia, followed by the Ostwald route to produce nitric acid and nitrate-related products. Those processes involve energy-intensive stages at high temperatures and pressures. The studied electrochemical route instead targets nitrate directly and operates at room temperature and pressure, according to Chemistry World’s report on the study.

That difference makes the approach scientifically interesting, but it does not establish a quantified lifecycle benefit or prove it can replace established production. The methods have different product pathways, and the new one still faces challenges in yield, selectivity, and scale-up.
Why industrial-scale production remains a challenge
The key scale-up problem is increasing current density without losing selectivity for nitrate. Electrochemical systems also face issues such as nitrate contamination and electrode degradation. A process that works in a laboratory cell must deliver more product per unit time and reactor volume before it can be judged practical at industrial scale.

Yifu Yu, a Tianjin University researcher not involved in the study, told Chemistry World: “Presently, the yield is too low per unit time and volume,” adding that the need for a larger reactor would raise fixed-asset investment. Lead author Kai Dong likewise said that “further research and development efforts are needed to overcome existing challenges and realise its full potential on an industrial scale”.

Nitrate is relevant to fertilizer production, so a renewable-electricity-driven route could have a potential agricultural application. But the study demonstrates laboratory electrochemical performance, not a fertilizer product, commercial availability, or displacement of existing industrial processes. The appropriate conclusion is that nitrate can be made from air at room temperature in a lab-scale electrochemical system, while the route’s industrial potential remains to be developed.
