Researchers have directly imaged a spin–orbit-coupled supersolid made from ultracold potassium atoms, revealing a stripe pattern that moves and changes spacing. This is a new experimental platform—not the first observation of supersolid behavior. A supersolid combines crystal-like order with superfluid behavior, but experiments on different platforms test that combination in different ways.
What makes a supersolid different?
A supersolid brings together two kinds of order usually associated with different states of matter. Like a crystal, it has a repeating spatial pattern; like a superfluid, it can support flow without ordinary viscous resistance. In the potassium experiment, the crystal-like feature was a series of stripes in an atomic cloud—not a conventional solid object. Nature’s description of a 2017 quantum-gas experiment frames the broader concept as the combination of crystallization in a many-body system and dissipationless flow.
Seeing a repeating density pattern is not, by itself, enough to establish superfluid behavior. Researchers therefore look for additional signatures, such as phase coherence, collective sound or excitation modes, rotational response, or quantized vortices. Which signature is available depends on the experimental platform; a result on one kind of quantum gas should not be treated as identical to a result on another.

In a 29 January 2026 account, ICFO described an experiment led by ICREA Professor Leticia Tarruell, with theorists at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The team directly imaged a stripe pattern in a spin–orbit-coupled potassium condensate. The stripes’ spacing oscillated, moving closer together and farther apart, and stripes appeared or disappeared as the cloud expanded or shrank. The collaborating institutions connect this changing pattern to the system’s superfluid character.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The result makes the spatial structure unusually visible: Tarruell described the crystal-like structure as “truly dynamic,” or “breathing.” That observation is different from a claim that ordinary solid matter has become frictionless. It concerns a carefully prepared ultracold quantum gas.
How the researchers produced the stripes
- Cool the atoms: The team cooled potassium atoms close to absolute zero to form a Bose–Einstein condensate.
- Couple spin and motion: Two laser beams coupled the atoms’ spin state to their momentum.
- Form a spatial pattern: Interference between two atomic states with different momenta produced stripes in the cloud.
- Image the changing pattern: The potassium setup amplified the stripes enough for direct observation, according to the institutional accounts. Earlier work with other atomic species had lower-contrast stripes that could only be inferred.
The collaborators explain the observed pattern with a “mixture model,” in which it arises from interference between modified atomic components. This is their interpretation of the potassium experiment; it should not be generalized as a settled explanation for every supersolid platform. Read the ICFO account and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona account for their descriptions of the experiment.

How this result fits earlier supersolid experiments
Supersolid behavior has been studied experimentally through several routes. These experiments use different atoms and mechanisms, and they do not all demonstrate the same feature. The potassium result is notable for direct imaging of a dynamic stripe pattern, while other work has tested coherence, sound modes, or rotational behavior.

The comparison shows why “a supersolid was observed” can refer to different kinds of evidence. A vortex observation probes rotational response; sound modes probe collective excitations; the potassium experiment makes a changing density pattern directly visible. Together, these approaches investigate related aspects of supersolidity, but they are not interchangeable demonstrations.

What the finding does—and does not—mean
- It does mean that researchers directly imaged a dynamic, stripe-patterned supersolid in a spin–orbit-coupled potassium gas.
- It does not mean this was the first experimental observation of supersolid behavior; earlier cavity-mediated and dipolar-gas experiments studied other platforms and signatures.
- It does not mean everyday solids can flow without friction or that the result is a practical consumer technology.
- It does not mean a proposed “supersolid liquid” has been created. The ICFO and UAB accounts describe that as a possible future research direction, not an achieved state.
