Cropping keeps a selected part of a photo; reframing is a broader attempt to improve how the subject sits in the picture, sometimes by extending the background. Use Crop to remove unwanted edges or set a format, and use straightening or perspective adjustments to correct a tilted or skewed frame. When the subject needs more space around it, Google Photos’ Auto frame or Apple Photos’ separate Reframe and Extend tools may help—but their availability and behavior differ.
What cropping and reframing actually do
A crop changes which part of the existing image you keep. You move the crop boundary inward, and the area outside it is excluded from the final composition. This is useful when an edge contains a distraction, when you want the subject to occupy more of the frame, or when a photo must fit a particular shape.
An aspect ratio describes that shape: for example, a square frame is wider relative to its height than a tall vertical frame. Choosing a ratio constrains the crop boundary, but does not by itself add detail or create new space around the subject. If the photo is already tightly framed, cropping more can make that problem worse.
“Reframing” can mean more than trimming. In these apps’ documented tools, it may mean changing the subject’s placement, correcting the geometry, or using AI to fill or extend background beyond the original framing. Those are different operations. A straightening slider rotates the existing image; it does not invent extra surroundings. An AI extension may synthesize image content beyond the original edges, which is not the same as recovering something the camera captured but left outside the frame.

The practical choice is based on the problem: remove edges or fit a destination with Crop; correct a slanted horizon with Straighten; correct geometric distortion with a perspective control; seek an AI-assisted composition tool when the subject needs more breathing room.
How the available tools compare
| Task | Google Photos on Android | Google Photos on iPhone or iPad | Apple Photos on iPhone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trim the frame | Drag crop handles in Edit > Crop. | Drag crop handles in the crop editor. | Drag crop corners or pinch in the crop editor. |
| Set a shape or ratio | Use Aspect ratio; Google gives Square as an example. | Use Aspect ratio; the guide lists ratio selection. | Use presets such as Square, Wallpaper, 9:16, and 5:7. Corner dragging preserves the original ratio until it is unlocked. |
| Correct tilt | Use Straighten. | Use Straighten. | Use the straightening adjustment slider. |
| Adjust perspective | The Android crop guide lists Perspective. | The iPhone/iPad crop guide does not list Perspective in the same control list. | Use vertical or horizontal perspective adjustment. |
| Recompose or add surrounding space | Auto frame can recompose or use AI to fill or extend background. | Auto Frame is listed; available behavior may vary by device. | Apple separately documents Reframe and Extend as Apple Intelligence tools. |
| Rotation or flipping | Rotate by 90 degrees and use Mirror. | Rotate by 90 degrees or flip. | Rotate by 90 degrees or flip horizontally. |
The table reflects the cited product guides, not a hands-on performance comparison. The controls are not identical across platforms, and the presence of one control in an Android guide does not establish that it appears in the same place—or at all—in the iPhone version.
Choose the right operation for the photo
Use a crop for unwanted edges or a destination format
Start with a crop when the photo already contains the composition you want, but part of it should be left out. Examples include trimming a distracting object at the edge, centering a person more prominently by removing surrounding area, or turning a landscape-oriented capture into a square selection. Review the full frame before committing: a tighter crop can remove useful context or cut into a person, object, or horizon.

If the image is intended for a particular destination, choose a matching preset or ratio before fine-tuning the crop. This makes the boundaries reflect the output shape rather than forcing a later crop to remove more of the picture. If the destination’s required ratio is not among the listed choices, the guides do not establish what every app version offers; check the controls on the device rather than assuming a specific custom-ratio option.

Use straightening for a tilted horizon
A slanted horizon, countertop, or building edge is usually a rotation problem, not a need for AI reframing. Straighten adjusts the existing composition so a line that should be level or vertical appears more aligned. Rotation can consume some of the image at the corners, so inspect the crop boundary after adjusting the angle. If the resulting frame cuts off something important, you may need to accept a tighter crop or return to the original angle.
Use perspective controls for skewed geometry
Perspective adjustment is intended for geometric skew, such as vertical lines that appear to converge or a frame that looks slanted because of the camera’s angle. It differs from simply rotating the whole photo: rotation changes the orientation of the image, while perspective adjustment changes the apparent geometry. Google’s Android guide explicitly lists Perspective; Apple documents separate vertical and horizontal perspective sliders in the iPhone crop tools. Google’s iPhone/iPad guide lists a different set of crop controls, so do not assume its Android Perspective control will be available on iOS.
Consider AI tools when the subject needs more space
If a photo is too tightly framed, an ordinary crop cannot restore the area outside the captured image. Google Photos describes Auto frame as a way to recompose a photo or extend background when it is too cropped or not properly framed. Google says the feature uses AI to fill parts of an image or expand as needed, and that output can vary by device. Treat the result as generated image content, not as a recovery of the actual scene beyond the camera’s frame.

Apple’s Reframe and Extend are separate tools documented under Apple Intelligence, not alternate names for the standard crop controls. Apple describes Reframe as adjusting perspective after capture and Extend as expanding the edges of the original photo frame. These capabilities have specific compatibility and availability conditions, covered below. Their names and functions should not be conflated with manual cropping, straightening, or perspective sliders.

Google Photos: crop, straighten, and Auto frame
On Android
- Open the photo in Google Photos, tap Edit, then open Crop.
- Drag the crop handles to exclude edges, or choose Aspect ratio when the output needs a particular shape. Google’s guide includes square as an example.
- Use Straighten for a tilted image. Use Perspective if the geometry is skewed and that control is available in the editor.
- Try Auto frame when the image is poorly framed or too tightly cropped and you want an AI-assisted recompose or background extension. Also check Rotate for 90-degree rotation and Mirror when a horizontal reversal is intended.
- Inspect the preview against the original before saving. Google documents comparing the edit by pressing and holding the preview.
Google’s Android guide lists Crop, Straighten, Rotate, Perspective, Auto frame, Aspect ratio, and Mirror. That is a platform-specific list; it is not a promise that every Android device will show every control or produce identical Auto frame results.
On iPhone or iPad
Google Photos’ iPhone/iPad crop guide describes crop handles, aspect ratio, 90-degree rotation, straightening, Auto Frame, and flipping. It does not list Perspective in the same way as the Android guide. Follow the controls displayed in the app rather than looking for a platform-specific option that may not be present.
The iPhone/iPad help page says certain editing features require iOS 18 or later and at least 3 GB of RAM. That statement applies to certain features, not to every crop action, and the guide information here does not identify those requirements as universal prerequisites for ordinary cropping. The same page has a US/English availability note for AI Enhance; AI Enhance is a separate feature and that note should not be treated as a general availability rule for Crop or Auto Frame.
Apple Photos: standard crop tools and Apple Intelligence
Standard crop and geometry controls
- Open the photo in Apple Photos and tap Edit, then open the crop controls.
- Drag a corner or pinch to change the crop. Apple says corner dragging keeps the original aspect ratio unless the ratio is unlocked.
- Choose a preset when you need a defined shape. Apple’s guide names Square, Wallpaper, 9:16, and 5:7.
- Adjust the straightening slider for a tilted frame. Use the vertical or horizontal perspective adjustment when the issue is skewed geometry rather than a simple rotation.
- Rotate by 90 degrees or flip horizontally if the orientation itself is wrong, then inspect the edges before saving with Done.
These are standard Photos editing controls; they are distinct from Apple Intelligence. A reader who only needs to trim a photo, select a preset, level a horizon, or adjust perspective does not need to treat Reframe or Extend as part of the ordinary crop workflow.

Reframe and Extend availability
Apple documents Reframe and Extend as Apple Intelligence tools requiring iOS 27 or later and an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 model or later. Apple also says availability depends on language and region, and usage limits may apply. Those requirements belong to these advanced tools; they should not be applied to the standard Photos crop controls.
When the tools are available, consider Reframe for the documented post-capture perspective adjustment and Extend when you want the frame expanded beyond the original photo edges. Check that the relevant control appears on the specific device and software version before planning a workflow around it. The official guide’s availability conditions mean these tools cannot be assumed on every iPhone, in every language, or in every region.
Save edits without losing the original
Before saving, compare the edited version with the original and look closely at the crop boundary, straightened corners, and any AI-generated extension. For a generated extension, check whether the fill looks consistent with the rest of the image; for a crop, make sure important details remain inside the frame. Keep the result only if it suits the intended use.

Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Distracting edge or wrong output shape: Crop, then choose the needed aspect ratio.
- Slanted horizon or alignment: Straighten or rotate.
- Skewed vertical or horizontal lines: Use a perspective adjustment where the platform provides one.
- Subject has too little surrounding space: Check for Google Photos Auto frame or Apple Reframe/Extend, depending on platform and eligibility.
- Need to preserve a reversible edit: Compare before saving and check whether the app is saving changes to the original or a separate copy.
