Redshift is a measured change in a galaxy’s spectrum. When identifiable spectral features arrive at longer wavelengths than they had when emitted, astronomers calculate a redshift value, written as z. In the distant universe, that shift is primarily evidence that expanding space has stretched the light during its journey. Interpreted with a cosmological model, redshift helps estimate a galaxy’s distance and apparent recession.

It also tells us that we are seeing an earlier stage of cosmic history: light from a remote galaxy may have traveled for billions of years before reaching Earth. Redshift does not, by itself, give the galaxy’s formation age or prove that the galaxy is simply flying through otherwise static space.

What redshift means in a galaxy’s light

Wavelengths carry a measurable fingerprint

A spectrum spreads incoming light by wavelength. Atoms and molecules emit or absorb light at characteristic wavelengths, producing lines, groups of lines, or broad spectral breaks that can be recognized in a galaxy’s spectrum. Astronomers compare each observed feature with its known rest-frame wavelength—the wavelength measured in the laboratory or in a source whose motion and expansion effects have been accounted for.

The conventional redshift definition is:

z = (λobserved − λemitted) / λemitted

Here, λobserved is the wavelength measured by the telescope and λemitted is the feature’s rest-frame wavelength. A positive value means the received wavelength is longer, or “redder,” than the emitted wavelength. The value is dimensionless: a result of z = 1 means the wavelength increased by an amount equal to its original wavelength, while z = 0.1 means a 10 percent increase.

The calculation is made from identifiable features, not from how red a galaxy looks in an ordinary photograph. A galaxy can appear red because of dust, older stars, or the filters used to image it, while its spectral lines reveal a different and much more precise redshift.

How do astronomers measure a galaxy’s redshift?

  1. Collect the light. A telescope records photons from the target galaxy. For spectroscopy, an instrument separates those photons into a wavelength-resolved spectrum.
  2. Find recognizable features. Analysts look for emission lines, absorption lines, or spectral breaks whose rest-frame wavelengths are known. Several matching features provide a more secure identification than one ambiguous feature.
  3. Compare observed and rest-frame wavelengths. Each feature is inserted into the redshift equation. If a line known to be emitted at one wavelength appears at a longer wavelength, the resulting positive value is the measured redshift.
  4. Check the identification. Astronomers test whether the same redshift explains other lines or breaks in the spectrum. This step helps prevent a line from one chemical transition being mistaken for a different transition at another redshift.
  5. Interpret the value in a cosmological model. The redshift is then combined with a model of the universe’s expansion to estimate distance, lookback time, and the apparent recession associated with that distance.

NASA describes this observed-versus-known wavelength comparison as the basis of redshift measurements. The resulting spectrum contains information that broad-band images cannot provide; NASA article coverage quotes Redshift Wrangler project lead Dr. Jeyhan Kartaltepe saying, “A spectrum is worth a thousand pictures.”

Spectroscopy and multi-filter imaging answer different questions

Method What it measures Use in redshift work Important limitation
Spectroscopy Light intensity as a function of wavelength, including resolved lines and breaks Measures a redshift from identifiable spectral features and can reveal which feature produced the shift Requires enough signal and an exposure or instrument setup capable of resolving the features
Multi-filter imaging Broad colors through several filters Flags candidate high-redshift galaxies when a characteristic break moves between filters Colors can be mimicked by red, dusty galaxies at redshifts below 5 and by cool stars in the Milky Way; candidates need confirmation or careful modeling

Photometric selection is therefore useful, especially when surveying many faint objects, but it carries a different uncertainty from a spectroscopic measurement. NASA specifically notes the dusty-galaxy and cool-star lookalikes as examples of why color alone can misclassify a candidate.

How does redshift tell us how far away a galaxy is?

Expansion of space stretches the light

For cosmological distances, the main explanation is not that a galaxy is moving through a pre-existing, static space in the ordinary everyday sense. As the universe expands, the space between distant regions grows while a photon is traveling. The photon’s wavelength is stretched along with that expansion, producing cosmological redshift.

A larger redshift generally indicates that the light has traveled through more cosmic expansion. Because expansion has changed over the universe’s history, converting a measured z into a distance requires a cosmological model rather than a single universal conversion factor. The model specifies quantities such as the expansion history and how long the light has been in transit.

The Hubble-law picture at modest distances

For relatively nearby galaxies, NASA’s educational presentation of Hubble’s law gives the simplified relation v = H × d, where v is recession speed, H is a Hubble-constant value for the chosen cosmological description, and d is distance. It expresses the observed approximately straight-line relation between distance and apparent recession in the small-distance regime.

That equation is an introductory picture, not an exact way to turn any arbitrary high redshift into a velocity. At large redshift, astronomers use the full cosmological expansion history. They also distinguish the redshift produced by expansion from a galaxy’s local, or peculiar, motion within its surrounding group or cluster. The measured redshift can contain both effects, but the expansion component dominates for sufficiently distant systems.

How can we see galaxies as they were billions of years ago?

Distance is also a time delay

Light travels at a finite speed. A galaxy one billion light-years away is observed with light that began its journey roughly one billion years ago; the telescope cannot show the galaxy’s present-day state until newer light arrives. Looking farther away therefore means looking farther back in time. NASA describes this as “looking back in time” and notes that objects with increasing redshift are seen at progressively earlier epochs.

The redshift helps place that observation on a cosmic timeline because it records how much expansion occurred while the light was traveling. Infrared detectors are especially valuable for early galaxies: expansion can shift light that was emitted at shorter wavelengths into infrared wavelengths by the time it reaches a telescope.

Illustrative redshift-to-epoch examples

The following pairs are examples published in a NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Scientific Visualization Studio timeline. They are model-dependent conversions, not values that follow from redshift alone:

Redshift Illustrative age of the universe when the light was emitted What the observation represents
z = 9 551 million years A very early stage of cosmic history
z = 6 942 million years Light emitted less than a billion years after the beginning
z = 3 2.2 billion years An earlier universe than the one seen at lower redshift
z = 1 5.9 billion years A look-back to a substantially younger universe

NASA states that the universe is about 13.8 billion years old. The exact age assigned to a galaxy’s observed epoch, and the corresponding lookback time, depend on the cosmological parameters used to interpret the redshift. The table’s numbers should therefore be read as source-published examples within a model, not as model-independent timestamps.

NASA’s Dr. Jeyhan Kartaltepe captures the observational idea this way: “In astronomy, the closest we get to operating a time machine is using telescopes to look at light traveling across the universe.” The telescope is not seeing a recording made by the galaxy; it is receiving old photons that have only just arrived.

Does redshift mean a galaxy is moving away from us?

It means the light is redshifted, but the physical interpretation depends on the scale and the source of the shift. In the distant universe, cosmological redshift chiefly reflects expansion of space. Saying only that the galaxy is “moving away through space” can give the wrong picture, because the stretching occurs as the space through which the light travels expands.

Nearby galaxies can also have ordinary motions relative to one another. A galaxy’s local gravitational environment can add a peculiar-velocity contribution to the observed wavelength shift. For distant galaxies, that local contribution is usually interpreted together with the much larger cosmological component when estimating distance and expansion.

A negative redshift, or blueshift, indicates that observed wavelengths are shorter than their rest-frame values. Blueshift can result from local motion toward the observer; it does not contradict the overall expansion of the universe, which is a statement about large-scale behavior.

Is redshift the age of the galaxy?

No. Redshift identifies how the light was shifted during its journey and, with a cosmological model, when that light was emitted relative to cosmic history. It does not tell you how long the galaxy had existed at that moment.

For example, a galaxy observed at an epoch when the universe was 942 million years old could have formed shortly before that light was emitted, or it could contain stars and structures that began forming earlier. Determining a galaxy’s own formation history requires additional evidence, such as its stellar populations, chemical composition, structure, and star-formation activity. Those are separate inferences from the redshift-to-time conversion.

It is useful to keep three statements separate:

  • Measured shift: spectral features appear at longer or shorter wavelengths than their rest-frame positions.
  • Cosmological interpretation: expansion of space stretched the light, allowing a model-based estimate of distance and apparent recession.
  • Lookback interpretation: the light left the galaxy in the past, so the observation shows an earlier cosmic epoch rather than the galaxy’s current state.

Why spectra are more decisive than color alone

Images through several filters can reveal a sudden change in brightness between bands. That change may indicate that a strong spectral break has shifted into or out of a filter, making photometric redshift estimates possible. Surveys can use this method to find large numbers of candidates efficiently.

However, broad colors combine light from many wavelengths and can be reproduced by unrelated objects. NASA gives two documented examples: red, dusty galaxies at redshifts below 5 can resemble high-redshift candidates, and cool stars in our own galaxy can have similar colors. A spectrum resolves the wavelength-dependent features that distinguish these cases, when the target is bright enough for a reliable measurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For this reason, astronomers often treat imaging as a selection step and spectroscopy as confirmation or refinement. The two methods are complementary, not competing claims that one makes every other measurement unreliable.

How astronomers turn a redshift into a cosmic-history estimate

  1. Measure or estimate z. Use resolved spectral lines or breaks when available; use multi-filter colors as a candidate estimate when spectroscopy is not yet practical.
  2. Assess confidence. Check multiple features, possible line identifications, signal quality, and known color lookalikes.
  3. Choose the cosmological model. The model determines how expansion changes with time and how redshift maps to distance and lookback time.
  4. Report the interpretation with its assumptions. State whether the value is spectroscopic or photometric and make clear that the inferred distance and epoch are model-dependent.
  5. Separate cosmic expansion from local motion. Use the redshift as evidence about large-scale expansion while allowing for peculiar velocities in nearby environments.

This chain is why one measured number can support several related conclusions without making them identical. Redshift is directly measured from wavelengths; distance, recession, lookback time, and the age of the universe at emission are inferred by combining that measurement with physics and a cosmological model.
