Recycling robots sort items by combining sensor readings with software classification, then using a mechanical system to move each item into a chosen stream. Cameras can show an object’s appearance and location; near-infrared (NIR) or other spectral sensors can add evidence about its material. The exact sensor mix and separator vary by facility, so there is no single design used everywhere.
How a recycling robot sorts an item
A sorting system has two distinct jobs: decide what an item is, then physically separate it. Sensors and software handle the first job. A robotic arm, pneumatic valve, or another actuator handles the second. A correct classification is useful only if the item can also be reached and successfully moved.
1. Items enter a sensing area
Waste is conveyed past a sensing system. Depending on the installation, the line may include a feeder, conveyor, camera enclosure, lighting, cameras arranged along the line, and pneumatic valves. These components present items to the sensors and provide the setting in which the software can observe them. This is one described industrial layout, not a blueprint shared by every plant.
2. Sensors capture appearance and material clues
A visible, or RGB, camera records the scene in color. Computer vision can detect objects, estimate their positions, and classify categories using visual information such as shape, color, labels, and surface appearance. These images are useful for locating an object, but visual resemblance does not prove that two objects have the same composition.

When material identity matters, a system may also measure reflected light beyond the visible range. NIR sensing, for example, uses patterns in reflected wavelengths as clues to composition. Depending on the system, visible, NIR, or mid-infrared signals may also provide information about color and material. Sensors contribute evidence; they do not simply read a universal recycling symbol printed on an item.
3. Software classifies and locates the target
Classification software maps sensor observations to categories the system has been trained or configured to recognize. It can combine image and spectral information, then associate a selected item with an estimated location. Machine learning can connect patterns in those signals to material properties, but the result depends on the available training examples, the quality of the incoming signals, and the categories the system is meant to separate.
4. A mechanism moves the item
The classification and location are passed to a separator. In a robotic picking system, an arm moves to the target and attempts to pick it up and place it in a bin or other destination. In another layout, a pneumatic valve can eject an item from a conveyor into a selected stream. These are different ways of carrying out the physical separation; neither should be assumed to be present in every installation.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11In practical terms, the software’s decision has to be tied to the item’s location and the selected destination. In the TU Delft-described ANASA system, an optical subsystem using ordinary RGB and NIR cameras generated candidate targets, and a separate robotic subsystem physically sorted those targets into bins. This illustrates the handoff between recognition and handling: the sensor and classifier identify a target, while the separator carries out the movement.
What different sensors can tell the system
| Sensor or method | What it contributes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| RGB or visible camera | Color images that can reveal shape, labels, surface appearance, and an object’s position in the scene. | Similar-looking objects can be made from different materials, so appearance alone can lead to a material misclassification. |
| NIR sensing | Reflected spectral patterns that can help identify plastics and distinguish them from materials such as paper, glass, wood, or metal. | Some materials and surfaces do not produce a useful signal; dark carbon-black plastic is a known challenge for conventional NIR. |
| Multispectral or hyperspectral imaging | Measurements across multiple wavelength bands, which can add information when a single visible image or ordinary NIR reading is insufficient. | More spectral information is not, by itself, proof that a system will identify every material in a facility’s stream. |
| Machine learning | A software method for mapping image and spectral patterns to learned categories. | Its output depends on the examples, signal quality, and decision classes available to it. |
Why combine visible and spectral information?
A visible image can be good at answering questions such as “Where is the bottle?” or “What does this package look like?” A spectral measurement can provide a different clue: whether the observed material has a reflectance pattern associated with a material category. Combining these kinds of observations can help a system avoid treating appearance as a substitute for composition.

The combination is not a guarantee of certainty. Sensors can provide incomplete or difficult-to-interpret signals, and the classifier still has to choose among its available categories. A system intended for one waste stream may use different sensing and decision categories from one designed for another.
For example, RGB vision and NIR do not answer exactly the same question. A camera can provide a clear view of an item’s visible shape and position, but a similar-looking container may be made from a different plastic. NIR is useful because its reflected wavelengths can add information about composition rather than relying only on how the item looks. In a combined system, the visual and spectral inputs are complementary clues, not interchangeable readings.
Why robots can confuse materials
Lookalikes may have different compositions
A soda bottle and a food container can look similar while being made of different plastics. A vision system that relies heavily on visible appearance may group such objects incorrectly. The issue is not that cameras cannot recognize objects; it is that recognizing an object’s visible form and identifying its material are different tasks.
Labels and surface appearance can also make classification harder. The evidence available to a sensor depends on the item and its condition, so a category inferred from one visual feature may not be enough to establish composition. Spectral sensing can add material-related evidence, but the appropriate choice depends on the materials and operating conditions a facility needs to handle.
Carbon-black plastic is a particular NIR challenge
Carbon black absorbs NIR radiation strongly. When the reflected signal needed for conventional NIR identification is not available, the system may not get the characteristic spectrum it relies on. This makes dark carbon-black plastics a known difficulty; it does not mean that every dark object is impossible to sort or that all NIR systems fail in the same way.

A project at Leibniz University Hannover describes investigating short-wave infrared (SWIR) hyperspectral imaging fused with conventional NIR to address this problem. That is a research direction, not evidence that the limitation has been eliminated across recycling plants. A proposed or investigated sensing method should not be treated as equivalent to an established facility-wide capability.
A detected target may still be hard to pick
Recognition is not the same as successful separation. A system can detect and classify an item yet fail to move it if the item is not accessible or grippable. The robotic separation examples establish that robots can be used to separate targets, but they do not establish one universal gripper design or a picking rate that applies across facilities.
This is why a system’s sorting chain should be considered as a whole. The item has to be presented to the sensors, produce usable signals, fit a category the software can identify, and then be accessible to the arm or other separator. A failure at any of those stages can prevent an intended separation, even if the other stages work as planned.
How facility designs differ
Recycling lines can combine cameras, spectral sensors, software, conveyors, pneumatic ejection, and robotic arms in different ways. Comparing systems therefore requires more than asking whether each one uses a “recycling robot.” The useful questions are what each system senses, what waste stream it targets, how it separates items, which difficult materials it addresses, and whether the evidence describes a research prototype or an industrial deployment.
- Sensing: Does the system use visible images, NIR, SWIR, hyperspectral measurements, or a combination?
- Target stream: Is it designed for plastics, electronic waste, mixed materials, or another specific input?
- Separation method: Does a robotic arm pick items, do valves eject them, or does the installation use another mechanism?
- Materials of concern: Does the system address dark or carbon-black plastics, lookalike items, labels, or mixed construction?
- Evidence level: Is the description of a deployed industrial system, a research system, or a method being investigated?
For example, the ANASA research system described by TU Delft used an optical subsystem with ordinary RGB and NIR cameras to generate candidate targets, followed by a robotic subsystem that separated the targets into bins. Its developers reported deployment in two Greek waste-management industrial units. This example shows how sensing and picking can be separate parts of one system; it does not establish that every facility uses the same camera arrangement or has the same results.

Other research and facility descriptions illustrate different combinations of sensing and actuation. A recycling lab, an AI-supported sorting description, and a research project are not interchangeable evidence: each can help explain a method, but a result from one setting does not establish a universal performance figure. The available evidence does not support a general current comparison of sorting accuracy, throughput, or cost across recycling robots.
Those gaps matter when comparing claims about systems. A report that describes a research method is not the same as evidence of routine industrial deployment, and a deployment in two facilities does not by itself establish performance everywhere. Ask what materials were in scope and whether the account describes a prototype, a research installation, or an operational system before treating one example as typical.

- Ask what “identification” means. A system may identify visible object categories, infer material composition, or do both. Those are related but distinct capabilities.
- Check the sensor combination. Visible cameras can provide appearance and location; spectral sensing can add composition clues. Neither should be assumed to solve every classification problem.
- Separate software performance from physical handling. A classification decision must still be translated into a successful pick or ejection.
- Look for the intended input stream. A method demonstrated on one set of materials cannot automatically be generalized to another.
- Distinguish deployment from investigation. A reported industrial installation is different evidence from a lab description or a technique being explored to address a limitation.
These distinctions help explain why a headline claim that a robot “recognizes recyclable materials” can be incomplete. The practical capability depends on the whole chain: presenting the item, obtaining usable sensor signals, assigning a relevant category, and physically directing the item to the intended destination.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a recycling robot know what an item is made of?
It may combine a visible camera image with NIR or other spectral measurements. The camera can help identify an object’s appearance and location, while reflected spectral patterns can provide clues about material composition. Software maps those signals to categories it has been trained or configured to recognize.
Does NIR read the recycling symbol on a package?
No. NIR identification relies on reflected wavelength patterns associated with material composition, not on reading a universal recycling symbol. Visible cameras may capture labels, but a label or appearance alone does not prove what material an item is made from.

Do all recycling facilities use robotic arms?
No. Facility designs vary. Some systems use robotic arms to pick and place targets; others may use pneumatic valves to eject items from a conveyor, or different combinations of sensors and separators.
Why are dark carbon-black plastics difficult to sort?
Carbon black strongly absorbs NIR radiation, which can leave conventional NIR systems without the reflected spectrum they use for identification. Leibniz University Hannover describes investigating SWIR hyperspectral imaging combined with conventional NIR as one approach, but that work should not be taken as proof the issue is solved at all facilities.
Can a recycling robot sort every material accurately, and how much does one cost?
There is no supported universal accuracy or cost figure for recycling robots. Capabilities depend on the sensors, target waste stream, material challenges, software categories, and physical separator. Published examples should be compared by their intended input and evidence level rather than treated as interchangeable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Bottom Line
Recycling robots identify items by turning camera and, in some systems, spectral readings into classifications and locations. A robot arm, pneumatic valve, or another mechanism then carries out the separation. Sensor combinations and facility layouts vary, and classification is not the same as a successful pick. Lookalike materials and carbon-black plastics remain important limitations, so claims about a system should be judged against its target stream and the evidence for its actual deployment.
