A recovered aircraft wreck is conserved through a controlled sequence: document and assess it, keep it wet or humid when its materials require that, desalinate it, clean deposits that threaten or hide the structure, treat corrosion selectively, then dry, protect, store and monitor it. The treatment is chosen for the wreck’s materials, condition, archaeological context and intended future—stabilization, study, exhibition or, much less commonly, restoration toward an appearance.
Raising the aircraft is therefore only the beginning. A responsible project has a funded treatment plan, trained conservators, lawful recovery authority and a suitable long-term facility before the lift takes place.
Conservation begins before the aircraft leaves the site
The most important conservation decisions are made while the wreck is still underwater. The Western Australian Museum’s aviation-archaeology guidance calls for pre-disturbance study of the site’s physical, biological and electrochemical conditions, including the sediment surrounding the aircraft. Teams establish the aircraft’s identity and context, map its position, record visible damage and examine how water, oxygen, salts, organisms and buried interfaces have affected it.

Why the plan must include a permanent home
The Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) warns that excavation should not proceed without full funding and proper curation space. A wreck can require years of wet treatment, specialist analysis, controlled drying, storage furniture, environmental monitoring and periodic maintenance. Raising an object without those resources can accelerate corrosion and leave a large, unstable structure exposed in an unsuitable building.
What happens during and immediately after the lift
Recovery is engineered to limit physical loss. Slings, frames, cradles and lifting points are selected for the wreck’s actual strength rather than for the shape it originally had. Loose components are secured, the position of parts is recorded and every recovered fragment is associated with the aircraft as precisely as possible.
The first environmental decision is whether the material should remain wet, humid or temporarily re-immersed. Marine objects often deteriorate rapidly when salts and oxygen become active during drying. NHHC describes an initial wet-treatment phase for recovered artifacts, while the correct humidity or water quality depends on the object and its treatment plan; there is no universal tank recipe for every aircraft.
The Sallenelles Spitfire illustrates this principle. After recovery, the wreck was returned to the water in Caen docks and kept in a humid environment for transport before conservation and display at the RAAF Museum. That interim measure was specific to the wreck and logistics of that project, not a general instruction to put every recovered aircraft back into the sea.
Assessment turns a wreck into a conservation plan
Once the aircraft is secure, specialists create a detailed record before removing material. Photography, measured drawings, three-dimensional recording, condition maps and labels preserve the relationship between parts that may later be dismantled. Conservators note cracks, delamination, missing sections, active corrosion, biological growth, residues, coatings and areas where dissimilar metals touch.
Scientific analysis helps identify alloys, paint layers, adhesives, rubber, acrylic glazing, textiles and corrosion products. Non-destructive examination can reveal hidden thinning or fractures without sacrificing a component. NHHC describes analysis, non-destructive examination, final documentation, photography and, in some projects, 3D scanning as parts of treatment planning and reporting.

An aircraft wreck is a composite archaeological object, not simply an old airframe awaiting mechanical refurbishment. Aluminum, steel, copper alloys, coatings, rubber, acrylics and organic remains can respond differently to the same water, salt or chemical treatment. A method that is safe for one alloy may damage a coating, a seal, a marking or an adjacent material.
Desalination removes the salts that keep corrosion active
Long-submerged marine artifacts can retain soluble chlorides and other salts in corrosion layers, pores and sediment. If those salts remain while oxygen and moisture are available, corrosion can continue even after the wreck is indoors. NHHC states: “Artifacts submerged for longer periods in marine environments must first undergo desalination.”
Desalination is a controlled professional operation. Conservators select water quality, circulation, temperature, container design, sampling intervals and endpoint criteria for the object. They replace or treat the solution as salts move out of the material and document the readings over time. The duration can vary substantially with thickness, porosity, alloy, sediment and the amount of corrosion product; a short soak is not a reliable substitute for a monitored treatment.
During this phase, the aircraft may remain supported in a tank, wrapped in a controlled wet system or separated into components if the structure cannot safely be immersed as one unit. The treatment record links each component to its location and condition so that later assembly does not erase archaeological evidence.
Cleaning exposes evidence without stripping the aircraft
Cleaning removes deposits that obscure inscriptions, trap salts or support damaging corrosion, but it is not an instruction to polish the metal. Conservators choose mechanical, aqueous or other methods according to the material and the evidence they need to preserve. Sediment can contain tool marks, paint, serial numbers and biological information; removing it indiscriminately can destroy the very information that makes the wreck significant.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIn a Smithsonian aircraft-conservation case, treatment records describe chloride-related pitting, corrosion in crevices and galvanic corrosion at contacts between dissimilar metals. The conservators removed an earlier coating and used water cleaning as part of that case’s treatment. Those actions document one aircraft’s condition and objective; they are not a recipe for another wreck, whose alloy, coating and archaeological value may differ.

Why dissimilar metals are a special problem
When unlike metals are electrically connected in a conductive marine environment, one can become the anode and corrode preferentially. Crevices retain moisture and chlorides, while pits concentrate corrosion processes in small areas that can perforate thin skins. Fasteners, brackets, fuel-system parts and repairs may therefore be more damaged than adjacent panels. Conservators map these relationships before deciding whether a component should be separated, treated in place or left untouched for stability.
Material-specific stabilization follows cleaning
After salts and harmful deposits are reduced, the team selects stabilization measures for each material. Corroded steel may need a chemical treatment or controlled conversion; aluminum may require a different approach; painted surfaces, rubber, acrylic windows and organic remains can require entirely separate protocols. NHHC describes adding chemical treatment where warranted, followed by analysis and documentation.
Protective coatings are applied only when their chemistry, reversibility, appearance and future maintenance are understood. A coating can slow oxygen and moisture access, but it can also hide new corrosion, trap water or complicate later examination. Every treatment should therefore be recorded with the product, concentration, application method, affected area and rationale.
Drying, protection and long-term storage
Drying is controlled rather than sudden. Conservators remove water at a rate compatible with the object’s structure and materials, watching for shrinkage, cracking, salt crystallization, distortion and separation of layered surfaces. Some parts can be dried separately; a fragile assembly may need support throughout the process.
After drying, the aircraft is placed in a stable environment with limits for temperature, relative humidity, light, dust and pollutants. Supports distribute loads without crushing weakened skin or blocking inspection. Display mounts must allow access for condition checks and must not create new galvanic contacts or condensation points.
Monitoring continues after installation. Staff inspect for fresh powdery corrosion, staining, blistering coatings, movement, pest activity and changes in humidity. Photographs, sensor records and condition reports provide a baseline so a small change can be treated before it becomes structural loss.

Stabilization is not the same as restoration to flight
There is no single correct visual or functional endpoint. The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum describes choices that include stabilizing an aircraft against further loss and preserving it in an unaltered condition. A museum may retain corrosion, damage and missing parts because they document the aircraft’s history, while another project may reconstruct limited sections for safe interpretation.

Returning a recovered wreck to airworthiness is a different engineering and ethical undertaking from archaeological conservation. It can require replacement of original structure, removal of evidence and extensive certification work. Unless that objective is explicitly justified and funded, the defensible goal is to preserve the surviving material and make any reconstruction clearly distinguishable.
What the documented cases show
| Case | Material or condition evidence | Wet or humid handling | Objective, facilities and duration | Legal or ethical context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dornier Do 17, Goodwin Sands | The recovery announcement concerns a marine aircraft wreck; detailed corrosion findings are not stated in the cited announcement. | Specific interim wet handling is not stated in the cited announcement. | The UK Ministry of Defence announced a two-year restoration at the RAF Museum conservation centre in Cosford in 2013. That was the project plan, not a general conservation benchmark. | The announcement concerns a UK recovery; permissions for protected military wrecks apply under UK law. |
| Sallenelles Spitfire | The wreck was conserved after recovery; the cited heritage account does not provide a complete alloy-by-alloy corrosion diagnosis. | Returned to the water in Caen docks and kept in a humid environment for transport. | Conserved and displayed at the RAAF Museum; a general treatment duration is not stated in the cited account. | DRASSM reported that the original raising was illegal and that the pilot’s remains were still in the aircraft. The remains were recovered and interred at the family’s request. |
| Smithsonian aircraft-conservation case | Chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and galvanic corrosion at dissimilar-metal contacts were identified. | The cited case records water cleaning, but does not establish a general wet-storage rule for all aircraft. | An earlier coating was removed and treatment was selected for the aircraft’s condition and conservation objective; a total duration is not stated in the cited case account. | The case demonstrates condition-specific museum conservation rather than a universal restoration method. |
These examples cannot establish a standard timetable or a universally best treatment. Their value is in showing how material condition, interim environment, purpose and available facilities change the decisions.
Law, ownership and human remains are part of conservation
Recovery authority is jurisdiction-specific. For UK military aircraft crash sites in the UK, its territorial waters and British aircraft in international waters, the Ministry of Defence says the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986 applies. Excavation or recovery requires a licence from the MOD’s Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre. Other countries use different laws governing ownership, archaeology, export, wreck jurisdiction and military remains.
Human remains and personal effects must be treated with the same care as the airframe. Teams should stop when remains are encountered, notify the competent authority, document the context, consult families where appropriate and follow lawful burial or memorial arrangements. In the Sallenelles case, recovery and reinterment of the pilot’s remains were part of the project, not an incidental detail.

There is no published general cost figure or typical duration in the cited institutional accounts. NHHC describes underwater-heritage conservation as time-consuming and expensive, but does not give a standard amount. The Dornier’s announced two-year restoration plan cannot be used as a benchmark for another wreck because size, materials, corrosion, staffing, facilities and objectives differ.

A realistic budget must cover permitted survey and recovery, engineering, transport, wet storage, desalination, laboratory analysis, conservator time, specialist equipment, documentation, environmental controls, security, mount design and decades of stewardship. The long-term cost continues after the opening ceremony through monitoring, repairs and periodic re-treatment.
A responsible recovery checklist
- Confirm legal authority, ownership and any military-site or human-remains restrictions before disturbing the site.
- Complete a pre-disturbance survey of the aircraft, sediment, biology and electrochemical environment.
- Define the conservation objective: stabilization, research, display, selective reconstruction or another documented purpose.
- Fund the treatment plan and secure an appropriate wet-treatment, laboratory and long-term curation facility.
- Design the lift, supports, transport and immediate environmental controls around the wreck’s measured weaknesses.
- Photograph, map, label and assess every part before cleaning or dismantling.
- Desalinate marine materials under monitored professional control, with a documented endpoint.
- Clean and treat corrosion selectively, preserving markings, coatings and archaeological evidence that do not threaten stability.
- Dry, coat, mount, store and display components under conditions that can be monitored and maintained.
- Keep a permanent treatment and condition record, including photographs, analyses, scans, materials and later inspections.
Common mistakes to avoid
Drying the wreck as soon as it reaches shore
Rapid drying can activate salts and cause cracking, distortion or loss of fragile layers. The correct interim state is determined by the treatment plan.
Using one chemical or coating on every material
Aircraft combine metals and non-metals with different reactions and conservation needs. A product suitable for one component can damage another or hide new corrosion.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Treating the project as cosmetic restoration
Polishing, repainting or replacing missing parts can erase evidence. Conservation decisions should explain what is original, what is stabilized and what is reconstructed.
Recovering first and finding a facility later
Without funded wet treatment, analysis and curation space, the lift can create faster deterioration than leaving the wreck documented in place.
Ignoring the people connected to the aircraft
Crash sites can contain remains and personal effects. Ethical consultation, lawful authority and respectful treatment must be built into the project from the start.
