The open-source screen recorder most closely matching this description is Recordly, though the title does not identify an app by name. It records a screen or app window, then opens the capture in a built-in editor for timeline edits and visual polish. Its automatic zoom feature suggests zooms from cursor activity; the project documentation does not describe a tool that independently turns every recording into a finished video.
Recordly’s features, platform notes, and export options are documented in the Recordly project repository. They are project claims, not results from an independent hands-on test.
What Recordly does after you record
Recordly combines desktop screen capture with a post-recording editor. The documented workflow is to select a display or app window, choose microphone and system-audio options, record, stop, and continue in the editor before exporting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That makes it useful for walkthroughs, demos, tutorials, product videos, and social clips where a raw screen capture needs more context or a cleaner presentation. You can save a project in Recordly’s .recordly format and return to it later, rather than treating the exported video as your only copy.

Which edits can you make?
The editor offers both timeline controls and presentation effects. The available tools documented by the project include:
- Trim and reshape: trim footage, crop the frame, and select an aspect ratio.
- Control pacing: create regions that speed up or slow down the recording.
- Direct attention: add manual zoom regions or review automatic zoom suggestions based on cursor activity.
- Add context: place text, images, figures, and additional audio regions on the timeline.
- Style the screen: apply backgrounds, solid colors or gradients, blur, padding, rounded corners, and shadows.
- Refine the cursor: adjust smoothing, motion blur, click bounce, sway, and size, or choose whether the rendered cursor is visible.
- Add a presenter: position and style optional webcam footage as an overlay.
Automatic zoom is assistance, not automatic editing
Recordly’s documentation describes cursor-driven automatic zoom suggestions. That can help identify moments when a viewer may benefit from a closer look, but it is not evidence that Recordly automatically selects all edits, adds a complete narrative, or delivers a finished video without review. Expect to inspect suggestions and make timeline choices yourself.

Exports and project files
The project documents MP4 and GIF export, with controls for quality, dimensions, aspect ratio, and GIF output. Keep the editable .recordly project if you may want to revise the timing or styling later; an MP4 or GIF is the rendered result, not the project’s native editable format.

Is Recordly the right kind of recorder?
Recordly is aimed at recording followed by editing and export. If you need a live-streaming workflow rather than post-capture polish, distinguish those needs before choosing a tool. The OpenScreen project, for example, describes its own recorder/editor and says it does not stream; that is information about OpenScreen, not Recordly. Its Windows documentation is for OpenScreen version 1.11.0 and was last updated September 29, 2026. OpenScreen’s Windows screen-recorder documentation
For any recorder/editor you consider, compare the operating systems and minimum builds it supports, how it captures system audio, whether it handles webcam footage, how much control its timeline gives you, and whether you need streaming or editing after recording. Automatic suggestions and manual editing are different capabilities, so confirm which workflow the project actually documents.
