rclone mount gives applications filesystem-style access to a configured Google Drive path at a local mount point; it does not, by itself, download the entire folder as a separate local copy. A sync or copy operation transfers files to another location. Choose a mount when an application needs to work with remote files through a filesystem path, and choose sync or copy when you need a transferred copy or a retry-oriented transfer job.
Mounting and syncing solve different problems
The key distinction in rclone’s mount documentation is the outcome. A mount presents a configured remote path through a local filesystem interface. An application can browse and open files there as it would at a filesystem path, while file content is requested as the application accesses it. A mounted folder is therefore an access route to remote storage, not proof that every file has been downloaded locally.
Sync and copy are transfer operations: rclone transfers files between a source and a destination, creating or updating files at the destination. If the requirement is a distinct copy stored at another location, a mount is not a substitute for that transfer. Conversely, transferring a copy does not provide the same live filesystem-style view of the remote path to an application.

| Question | Mount | Sync or copy |
|---|---|---|
| What do you get? | A local mount point through which an application accesses the remote. | A transferred set of files at a destination. |
| Does it create a separate complete local copy? | Not by itself. Optional VFS caching can use local disk. | A local destination can hold a separate copy; storage needs depend on what is transferred. |
| How does the application interact with files? | Through the mounted filesystem interface. | It works with files after they have been transferred to the destination. |
| What is the primary choice? | Filesystem-style access to remote files. | A transfer job or separate copy. |
That difference is more useful than thinking of one as simply a faster or slower version of the other. They are different workflow designs, with different implications for local storage, application behavior, network availability, and handling interrupted transfers.

What happens when an application uses a mount
With a mount, the local path acts as an interface to the configured remote. An application can request directory contents or file data through that path; rclone does not need to pre-download the whole folder just because the mount exists. Its VFS can use chunked reading, so it may request only portions of a file that the application actually reads. This can avoid transferring unread portions, though it does not remove dependence on the remote connection when data is needed.
Mounting does not make a cloud filesystem behave exactly like a local disk. Cloud storage and filesystem applications have different expectations about reliability and file operations. The rclone project explains the reliability distinction directly: “File systems expect things to be 100% reliable, whereas cloud storage systems are a long way from 100% reliable.” The project makes this point in its comparison of mount with sync and copy.
For a mount, an application’s operation can depend on the network, the remote service, and the VFS mode. A file may appear in a directory listing without its full contents being resident on the computer. If access to the remote is unavailable, the mounted path cannot serve as an independent offline copy of files that have not been cached or otherwise saved locally.
Local cache: compatibility at the cost of disk space
Some applications assume filesystem behavior that a direct remote-backed mount cannot provide in every circumstance. The rclone mount documentation notes, for example, that without caching some operations such as simultaneous reading and writing are not possible. VFS cache modes improve compatibility by buffering files on local storage, but the cache consumes disk space.

| VFS cache mode | What it buffers | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
writes |
Writes and files that are being read and written. | Read-only files are read directly from the remote; local disk is used for buffered writes. |
full |
Reads as well as writes. | Can support a broader range of application behavior, but both read and write activity can consume local cache space. |
These modes are not merely performance settings. They change how much local disk the workflow may need and how files are handled during access. If the application only reads files, buffering all reads in full mode may consume space without being necessary for that particular workload. If an application needs read/write behavior or expects more conventional filesystem semantics, the broader buffering in full may be appropriate. Choose based on the actual access pattern, then budget disk space for the mode and workload rather than assuming a mount is storage-free.
Cache configuration also does not turn a mount into a managed backup or a guaranteed complete local mirror. The mount’s purpose remains access through a filesystem interface; a cache supports that interface and can hold buffered data. If the requirement is a retained separate copy, use a transfer workflow and verify that the destination contains what you intend to keep.
Writes through a mount are not necessarily uploaded at save time
A save in the application and a completed upload are not necessarily the same moment. With VFS caching, rclone writes a file back after the application closes it and it remains unused for the configured --vfs-write-back interval. That quiet period is part of the write-back behavior, not an indication that the file is already safely present in Drive immediately after an application reports a save.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis timing matters when another device or process needs to see the latest version, when a user plans to disconnect, or when an application closes a file and proceeds to other work. Account for the write-back interval and the need for the remote to be reachable. Do not treat the local cache as confirmation that an upload has completed. For workflows where transfer completion and retry handling are central, sync or copy is the more suitable class of operation.

Why sync and copy can be a better fit for transfers
Rclone documents sync and copy as coping with cloud-storage unreliability through retries. Mount cannot retry uploads in the same way without making local copies. That is an important difference for a job whose purpose is to transfer files: the transfer commands are designed to handle unreliable cloud operations as a transfer workflow, while a mount must present an interactive filesystem-like interface.
The choice between a mount and a transfer should therefore follow the desired end state. A program that needs to open files from a path may benefit from a mount. A task that needs files placed in another location, or whose success depends on a transfer job retrying when cloud operations fail, points toward sync or copy. A transfer takes time and requires enough destination space for the material being transferred; a mount instead trades that full-copy requirement for network dependence and any cache the VFS uses.
Before running a transfer, determine the source and destination direction, any filters, and what the selected command does when destination contents differ. Rclone’s mount-versus-transfer comparison establishes the broad distinction, but the exact operational effects depend on the command and its options. Do not select a transfer command based only on the word “sync,” and do not assume that a mount will create a preserved destination copy.

Google Docs and VFS file sizes
Google Docs files can have an unknown or zero size through VFS. As a result, an application or operating system may not handle them as expected when accessed through a mount; rclone warns that they may not download correctly through every application and OS combination. If Google Docs are important to the workflow, test the actual combination of application and operating system rather than assuming every program will interpret those entries correctly.

Rclone says sync and copy handle Google Docs transfers correctly because they treat their size specially. That makes transfer operations a better-supported choice when the goal is to move Google Docs files, rather than rely on a particular application to read them through a mounted VFS path. This is a Google Drive-specific caveat, not a reason to assume all other files behave the same way.
Drive rate limits and many small files
The rclone Google Drive backend documentation gives an approximate limitation of about two files per second for transfers. Rclone also notes that individual files may transfer much faster and that many small files can take a long time. Treat that figure as a rough operational note from the undated documentation, not a guaranteed per-account speed, a fixed service limit, or a forecast for a particular folder. File sizes and the mix of files matter to the practical experience.
A mount can request content as applications access it, and chunked reading can avoid requesting portions that are not read. A transfer, by contrast, is intended to move the selected files to the destination. Neither behavior eliminates Drive’s operational limits. For a folder containing many small files, allow for a longer transfer rather than estimating duration from the total folder size alone.
Choose the workflow by the job you need done
| Your requirement | Better fit | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| An application must browse or open remote files through a local path. | Mount | Network availability, the application’s filesystem expectations, VFS cache mode, and local disk for any cache. |
| You need a separate copy at another location. | Sync or copy | Source and destination direction, filters, destination storage, and the chosen command’s behavior when files differ. |
| An application writes files and expects ordinary read/write behavior. | Mount with an appropriate VFS cache mode, if the application works with it. | Whether writes is sufficient or full is needed, local cache capacity, and write-back timing. |
| Retry handling during an unreliable cloud transfer is important. | Sync or copy | What files are included and what outcome the selected operation produces at the destination. |
| The folder contains Google Docs that must be transferred. | Sync or copy | Rclone documents special handling for these files in transfer operations; test mount behavior if an application must access them through VFS. |
| You only need portions of large remote files as users read them. | Mount may fit | Chunked access can request portions read, but the application still depends on remote access and VFS behavior. |
These are workflow choices, not mutually exclusive commands for every situation. For example, a user may need a mounted remote for interactive access and a separate transfer for a retained copy. In that case, treat them as two distinct outcomes: the mount supplies the access path, and the transfer creates the destination copy. Do not infer that cached files from the first workflow automatically satisfy the second.

Configuration and safe operation considerations
Plan the mount around its user and application
Identify which application will use the path and whether it only reads, writes, or may read and write a file simultaneously. That determines whether direct remote reads and a writes cache are likely to suit the work, or whether full read/write buffering is needed. Estimate available local disk with the full cache behavior in mind. A cache mode that improves compatibility can be a poor fit if it has more disk demand than the machine can support.
Plan a transfer around its destination
Specify the intended source and destination before beginning. Review filters so the transfer includes the intended files, and check the command’s behavior for destination files that are not present in the source. Those details determine what the transfer actually leaves behind; they should not be guessed from the fact that both sync and copy transfer files.
Check the current Drive setup guidance
The rclone Drive backend documentation includes a notice that the shared default client ID is being retired during 2026 and advises users to create and use their own client ID to avoid interruption. Because that notice is time-sensitive and the page is undated, check the current Google Drive backend documentation before setting up or changing a Drive remote. Do not assume a setup note remains current merely because an older configuration once worked.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting a mount to be a full download. A mount exposes a remote path; it does not automatically leave a complete local copy behind.
- Assuming every save is already in Drive. Cached writes are written back after close and after the configured unused interval.
- Ignoring cache capacity. The
fullmode buffers reads and writes, and cache modes use local disk. - Using a mount for an application without checking its behavior. Some filesystem operations are not possible without caching, and Google Docs behavior can vary by application and operating system.
- Expecting an interactive mount to provide transfer retries like sync or copy. Rclone documents retry handling for sync/copy; mount cannot retry uploads in the same way without making local copies.
- Treating “about two files per second” as a guaranteed speed. It is an approximate figure in rclone’s undated Drive documentation, with individual files potentially transferring faster and many small files taking longer.
Bottom line for choosing mount versus sync
Use rclone mount when the essential requirement is to make remote Drive files available to an application through a filesystem path and you can manage the network dependence, compatibility, cache space, and write-back timing. Use sync or copy when the essential requirement is to transfer files to a destination and create a separate copy, particularly when retry behavior matters. For Google Docs, prefer sync or copy for transfer; for a mount, test the precise application and operating system. The correct choice follows the required outcome—not merely whether the files are in Google Drive.
