Ray-Ban Meta audio is a phone-connected, open-ear system: speakers built into the frames play music and calls, microphones capture voice, Bluetooth carries normal phone audio, and the Meta AI app handles pairing and product setup. A separate temporary Wi-Fi connection is used for faster tasks such as importing media and installing firmware.
The short version
Ray-Ban Meta glasses do not work like earbuds hidden inside a frame. The audio-only Ray-Ban Meta Audio model uses two open-ear speakers and a six-microphone array. The speakers let you hear sound without inserting anything into your ears, while the microphones support calls and voice commands.
Your smartphone remains central to the experience. You start pairing with Bluetooth enabled, finish setup in the Meta AI app, and use Bluetooth for ordinary phone music and calls. Ray-Ban says the glasses can continue receiving phone audio over Bluetooth even when they are not connected to the app. For data-heavy operations, the glasses temporarily create a direct internal Wi-Fi connection so media imports and firmware updates can complete faster.
Specifications are not interchangeable across the product family. Counts, operating-system requirements and battery estimates depend on the exact model, generation and market. The figures below identify which product they describe.

What is inside the audio-only model?
Two open-ear speakers
Ray-Ban lists “2 Speaker Open Ear” for the current US Ray-Ban Meta Audio listing. The speakers are built into the frames, so sound reaches your ears without earbuds. This is the basic reason you can remain aware of surrounding sounds while listening.
Official pages do not specify the driver construction, frequency response, maximum sound-pressure level, exact placement geometry, acoustic leakage or signal-processing method. Those details should not be inferred from the speaker count. In practical terms, the documented system is simply two frame-mounted open-ear speakers fed by the connected phone or another supported audio function.
A six-microphone array
The same audio-only listing identifies a six-microphone array. Ray-Ban documents the microphones as part of the voice-command and call experience, but does not publish each microphone’s role, beamforming layout or the precise noise-reduction algorithms. “Six microphones” therefore describes the hardware count, not a promise about performance in every environment.

Controls on the frames
Ray-Ban’s product material describes touch and voice controls. Touch controls can handle playback actions, while voice controls provide hands-free commands where the relevant software, account and service are available. The controls do not replace the phone: the phone and app remain part of ordinary setup and product operation.
How the phone connection is established
Ray-Ban’s setup guidance starts with the phone’s Bluetooth settings and then moves into the Meta AI app. Use this sequence for a new pairing or after a reset:
- Check the phone requirement. The current US Ray-Ban Meta Audio listing states minimum compatibility of iOS 17 or Android 10. Make sure the phone is running a supported version before troubleshooting the glasses.
- Turn on Bluetooth. Enable Bluetooth in the phone’s system settings. Keep the phone close to the glasses during setup.
- Open the Meta AI app. Follow its device-add or pairing flow rather than trying to complete the entire setup from the operating system’s Bluetooth menu alone.
- Approve the requested permissions. The app may need access required for calls, audio control, device management or media handling. The exact prompts can change with the app and phone operating system.
- Finish the in-app pairing process. Once the app confirms the glasses, test both music playback and a call so you know the phone has established the expected audio connection.
Ray-Ban’s FAQ states: “To operate Ray-Ban Meta glasses you need to connect your glasses with a smart phone and the Meta AI app.” That requirement describes normal operation; it does not mean every feature will work without internet access or that every AI function is available when the app is closed.

Which wireless link carries each task?
The glasses use different wireless paths for different jobs. Treating every transfer as Bluetooth is a common source of confusion.
| Task | Documented connection | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Initial pairing | Bluetooth, completed through the Meta AI app | Bluetooth discovery and the app’s setup flow establish the normal phone relationship. |
| Music and other phone audio | Bluetooth | The phone streams audio to the glasses; Ray-Ban says phone audio remains available over Bluetooth even without an active Meta AI app connection. |
| Phone calls | Bluetooth | Call audio and the glasses’ microphones use the phone’s Bluetooth connection. |
| Media import | Temporary internal Wi-Fi connection | The glasses switch to Wi-Fi for a faster transfer instead of relying on the ordinary audio link. |
| Firmware updates | Temporary internal Wi-Fi connection | The same task-specific Wi-Fi path is used for faster update downloads. |
Ray-Ban describes the Wi-Fi behavior this way: “For things that require a fast connection to download, like import and firmware updates, your glasses will temporarily connect to their internal Wi-Fi network.” On iOS, the phone may ask you to join that network. This does not make Wi-Fi the normal music connection; Bluetooth remains the documented path for phone audio and calls.
What listening and calling feel like in use
Music and other playback
Start playback on the connected phone or through a supported control, then adjust playback with the frame controls or voice commands that your software and service support. Because the speakers are open-ear, people nearby may hear some sound, especially at higher volume, although the official pages supplied here do not provide a measured leakage level. Keep volume at a level that lets you remain aware of traffic and other hazards.

Calls
For a call, the phone supplies the Bluetooth connection, the frame speakers provide the received audio, and the microphone array captures your voice. If the phone is too far away or Bluetooth has connected for media but not calls, call quality can fail even though the glasses appear to be powered on.
Folding and reconnection behavior
A regional Ray-Ban support FAQ says audio can pause when the frames are folded and reconnect to the Bluetooth audio source when they are reopened. That behavior is support guidance for the cited region and software state, not a guarantee for every music service, market or future firmware version.
Model and generation differences
Do not apply the audio-only model’s six-microphone count or battery estimate to every Ray-Ban Meta product. Ray-Ban’s broader product overview lists different hardware across generations.

| Product description | Speakers | Microphones | Published compatibility or endurance figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current US Ray-Ban Meta Audio (audio-only) | 2 open-ear speakers | 6-microphone array | Bluetooth 5.3; minimum iOS 17 / Android 10; up to 12 hours on one charge, according to the manufacturer |
| Listed UK Gen 2 camera-equipped model | 2 custom-built speakers | 5-microphone array | Battery estimate and operating-system minimum are not stated in the cited overview |
| Other generations and camera-equipped models | Varies by model | Ray-Ban lists five- or six-microphone arrays depending on generation | Varies by model and market; check the exact product page |
The “up to 12 hours” figure is a manufacturer estimate for the current US Ray-Ban Meta Audio listing, not an independent measurement. Actual runtime depends on listening, calling, controls, connection conditions and software. The product pages consulted do not provide a single family-wide battery number.
Requirements before you troubleshoot
- A compatible smartphone: the current US audio-only listing specifies iOS 17 or Android 10 as minimum versions.
- Bluetooth enabled for pairing, music and calls.
- The Meta AI app for setup and normal product management.
- The correct regional service and account availability for any listening or AI feature you plan to use.
- A close phone-to-glasses distance during pairing and calls.
Service support and app labels can differ by country, phone operating system and software release. A feature shown in one region’s support page is not automatically available everywhere.

- Check Bluetooth and call status. Confirm Bluetooth is enabled and that the glasses are connected for both audio and calls, not merely visible as a saved device.
- Toggle Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth off, wait briefly, turn it back on, and allow the glasses to reconnect.
- Check the in-call audio route. If the phone offers an audio-output selector during the call, choose the glasses rather than the handset or another accessory.
- Use the Meta AI app’s microphone troubleshooting adjustment. Ray-Ban provides a microphone adjustment setting for call problems. Change it before starting the next call.
- Do not change that adjustment mid-call. Ray-Ban warns that changing the microphone setting during a call can affect audio.
- Restart and re-pair if needed. If the connection remains unreliable, restart the phone and glasses, then remove the old pairing and repeat the app-led setup.
These are official troubleshooting steps, not controlled performance tests. If music works but calls do not, concentrate on the call connection and microphone setting rather than assuming the speakers have failed.
What the published specifications do not tell you
The cited product and support pages do not establish a Bluetooth codec, Bluetooth range, audio profile details, speaker frequency response, driver type, measured loudness, acoustic leakage, microphone placement, beamforming design or quantified noise reduction. They also do not provide independent battery testing. Those omissions matter when comparing products: a hardware count alone cannot predict call clarity or music quality.
Use the model-specific product page and the support guidance for your country when checking compatibility, battery expectations, service availability or app instructions. Firmware and app behavior can change, so a folding pause, reconnection behavior or menu name should be treated as version-dependent rather than permanent hardware behavior.
