The official material behind the phrase “Rainbow Six Tactics” describes Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege and its Siege X updates, not a separately documented Ubisoft game with that exact title. In Siege, operators are specialized, loadout-based roles; destruction changes the map’s usable geometry; and combat happens in real time inside attack-versus-defense rounds. It is round-based, not turn-based: players do not wait for an initiative order before moving or firing.
This guide uses Ubisoft’s current descriptions of Siege and the Siege X showcase published March 13, 2025. Operator abilities, available maps, modes and balance can change with later seasons, so treat named feature details as version-specific.
What “Rainbow Six Tactics” refers to
Ubisoft’s official documentation does not identify a standalone product called Rainbow Six Tactics in the material available for this topic. The documented game is Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, with Siege X adding systems and a new mode. If you meant Rainbow Six Mobile, Rainbow Six Extraction or another project, its rules may differ; the explanations here apply to Siege-style tactical multiplayer.

That distinction matters because “tactics” describes how Siege is played rather than a turn-based ruleset. Ubisoft presents operators, objectives, attack and defense rounds, and destructible environments as connected systems. A team wins advantages by collecting information, changing the building, and timing an assault or defensive hold—not by taking turns in a board-game sequence.

How Rainbow Six operators work
Every player selects an operator with a defined ability set and a customizable loadout. The operator is therefore more than a character skin: it determines which information, entry, breaching, support or denial actions your team can attempt. Ubisoft describes these unique abilities and loadouts as central to team composition and tactical planning.
Abilities create asymmetric jobs
Operator design is asymmetric. One selection may specialize in gathering or protecting information, another in opening reinforced parts of a site, and another in slowing or denying a push. These jobs overlap in practice, but they are not interchangeable. The useful question is not “Which operator is strongest?” It is “Which capability solves the problem this objective and enemy setup present?”
- Information: reveal positions, identify defensive preparation or confirm that a route is clear before teammates commit.
- Entry: create a safe path, take the first fight or provide protection for a player crossing a dangerous opening.
- Breaching: open a wall, floor, ceiling or hatch when the objective cannot be reached efficiently through existing doors.
- Support: supply cover, protection, utility removal or other assistance that lets the primary attackers complete their jobs.
- Denial: stop an entry, delay a plant or retake, restrict movement and force opponents into less favorable routes.
A good lineup combines capabilities rather than stacking several versions of the same job. The best choice changes with the site, available walls and floors, likely defender positions, the round clock and what your teammates already selected.

Compare operators by the problem they solve
| Decision lens | Question to ask | Why it changes a round |
|---|---|---|
| Capability | What can this operator do that the current lineup cannot? | Prevents a missing tool from becoming a hard stop at the objective. |
| Gadget interaction | Which friendly or hostile devices does the ability enable, remove or protect? | Combined utility can make an opening usable instead of merely visible. |
| Information value | Does the ability confirm a target, route or threat? | Reduces the risk of entering a prepared crossfire. |
| Breach or denial impact | Does it change access to the objective or prevent the enemy from using access? | Alters where each team can safely stand and move. |
| Map dependence | Does the operator need a particular wall, floor, hatch or line of sight? | Some selections are powerful only when the site geometry supports them. |
| Timing and risk | Must the ability be used early, during entry or for the retake? | Using a resource too soon can leave the team unable to answer the final fight. |
Loadouts are part of the role
The loadout determines how an operator performs the job. Weapon choice affects the distances at which you can challenge an opponent; secondary equipment can support entry, information gathering or area control. Select equipment for the route and timing you expect, not in isolation from the ability. A breach plan that creates a long sightline requires a way to watch that sightline; a denial plan requires enough resources to remain effective when the attackers change direction.
A practical operator-selection process
- Identify the objective problem. Decide whether the team must enter, expose a defender, protect a plant, hold a room or stop a retake.
- Read the site geometry. Note reinforced surfaces, soft walls, floors, ceilings, hatches, doors and likely approach routes.
- Choose the irreplaceable capability first. Select the tool that enables the plan or answers the most dangerous defensive setup.
- Fill the interaction gaps. Add information, protection, entry or denial that makes the first choice reliable.
- Assign jobs before the action starts. One player can gather information, another prepare the opening, and another cover the timing window.
- Preserve a late-round resource. Do not spend every ability during preparation if it may be needed to deny a counterattack or secure the final objective action.
What you can destroy and why it matters
Siege treats destruction as tactical map editing, not just visual damage. Breaching or damaging surfaces can create a route, a sightline, a firing angle, a drop, a rotation path or a new piece of cover. The result is a different set of safe and unsafe positions for both teams.
Common geometry changes
| Change | Tactical opportunity | Risk to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Wall opening | See or attack an objective from a new angle; move between rooms without using a doorway. | The opening can expose your own team to additional angles and return fire. |
| Floor or ceiling breach | Pressure a room vertically, gather information or attack a defender behind cover. | Sound, debris and the exposed position can reveal the attacker’s timing. |
| Hatch access | Create a fast route between levels or an unexpected entry point. | Defenders may watch the landing area or use the opening as a funnel. |
| Soft-surface damage | Make smaller sightlines, denial points or emergency rotations. | Small holes can be difficult for teammates to read and may create accidental exposure. |
| Environmental interaction | Trigger a hazard, remove an obstacle or alter how a route is crossed. | The effect can help either side if activated without a clear timing plan. |
Siege X’s official description adds destructible materials and environmental interactions including gas pipes, fire extinguishers and metal detectors. These features expand the number of objects that can influence a route or a fight, but the same principle applies: destruction is valuable when it changes information, timing, access or denial.

Read destruction as information
A new hole communicates something even before a player appears through it. It may reveal where an attacker is working, which room they want, or which angle they intend to hold. Conversely, leaving a surface intact can conceal movement and preserve cover. Teams should ask what an opening tells the opponent, not only what it lets the creator see.

Destruction also changes sound and timing. Breaking a surface can announce an approach, while a prepared opening may let a player act immediately when a teammate confirms a defender’s location. Because the map can be edited during the round, a plan made during preparation is a starting geometry rather than a permanent one.
How breaching changes a round
Breaching is the clearest example of operators and destruction working together. An opening matters only when the team can exploit it, and defenders can often contest the opening, relocate or turn the new angle into a trap.

- Find the objective relationship. Determine which wall, floor, ceiling or hatch gives access to the objective or to a defender supporting it.
- Collect information first. Confirm that the intended surface is relevant and learn which defenders or devices can punish the breach.
- Prepare the opening. Use the appropriate operator ability or equipment while teammates establish protection and watch likely pressure points.
- Choose the breach type. A full passage, a narrow sightline, a vertical opening and a drop create different exposure and movement options.
- Exploit the timing window. Move, deny a position or force defenders away while they are reacting to the changed geometry.
- Secure the new angle. Assign a player to watch the opening, protect the planter or prevent a counterattack; an unused breach is only noise and risk.
Defenders respond by denying the surface, watching the approach, moving to a safer position or using the opening against the attackers. That interaction is why breaching is not an automatic win condition. It trades preparation and resources for access, information or pressure, and the trade is favorable only if the team can hold what it creates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Rainbow Six turn-based or real-time?
Siege is a real-time tactical shooter. Players move, aim, use abilities, destroy surfaces and fight simultaneously during attack and defense play. The “round” is a match structure: it separates engagements, defines objectives and supports side changes. It does not mean that players take alternating turns.
Recommended Free Tools
| Feature | Siege-style round-based play | Turn-based system |
|---|---|---|
| Player actions | Movement, shooting and abilities occur continuously while the round is active. | Actions are normally resolved during a player’s or team’s discrete turn. |
| Initiative order | No universal turn order is documented for Siege. | An initiative or sequence determines who acts next. |
| Planning | Teams plan during preparation and adapt instantly to new information. | Players usually plan around the end of a turn before the opponent acts. |
| Map changes | Destruction and utility can alter routes during the live engagement. | Map changes are commonly resolved as part of turn actions. |
| Win structure | Objectives are contested in attack-versus-defense rounds and modes. | Objectives are resolved through alternating action phases. |
Rounds and phases
A typical Siege match gives each side an attacking or defending role for a round, with operator selection and preparation followed by the live objective contest. After the round, the match continues according to its mode and side rules. Preparation is therefore a planning phase inside a real-time game, not a turn in which the opposing team is frozen.

Siege X’s Dual Front example
Siege X also illustrates why the franchise should not be reduced to one turn structure. Ubisoft describes Dual Front as a permanent 6v6 mode with sectors and mixed attacking and defending operators. Its launch operator pool was curated at 35 operators, a dated feature detail that may change. The mode still uses real-time action while changing team composition, respawn and objective flow compared with round formats.
How the systems combine in an actual plan
Attack: information to opening to control
An attacking team can begin by identifying where defenders are positioned and which route is least protected. An operator with the required breaching capability then creates an opening while teammates cover the approach. A support player protects the breach or removes a threat, and a denial-oriented selection can stop defenders from retaking the exposed area. The sequence converts information into changed geometry and then into controlled movement.
Defense: deny, redirect and retake
Defenders do not need to protect every surface equally. They can reinforce or deny the surfaces that make the objective vulnerable, watch the most valuable approach, and leave less important routes as deliberate distractions. When an opening is created, defenders can contest it, fall back to a safer angle or use utility to delay the attackers until the breach no longer gives them enough time to act.

An ability used alone may provide a momentary advantage, but its value increases when another player is ready to exploit it. Information without an entry plan is only a fact; a breach without someone watching it is an invitation to a counterattack; denial used before the enemy commits may expire before it matters. Teams should call the intended action, the player responsible for exploiting it and the fallback route if the opponent reacts.
Version, mode and availability caveats
Ubisoft describes Siege as an evolving game with continuing seasons, balancing, operators, maps and features. Names, abilities, loadouts, destruction behavior and mode rules can therefore change after the Siege X material cited here. Check the current in-game operator and mode descriptions when a precise interaction matters, especially for ranked play or a newly released season.
The 6v6 Dual Front format and its 35-operator launch pool belong to the Siege X announcement of March 13, 2025; they are not timeless franchise-wide specifications. Other modes can use different objective, respawn or team-composition rules. What remains consistent across the documented systems is the combination of specialized operators, editable environments and real-time tactical decision-making.
Quick Recap
Quick reference for new players
- Choose an operator for the team’s objective problem, not merely personal preference.
- Inspect walls, floors, ceilings and hatches before committing to a route.
- Pair every opening or hazard with information and a player assigned to exploit it.
- Expect the opponent to use a new hole or interaction against you.
- Keep at least one useful resource for the final denial, plant or retake.
- Call the game round-based and real-time, never turn-based, unless discussing a separate Rainbow Six title with different documented rules.
