Quordle sends every five-letter guess to four hidden words at once. The standard game gives you nine shared attempts, while each board evaluates the guess independently: green fixes a letter in the right place, yellow confirms the letter in another place, and gray removes it from that board’s answer. Better play comes from keeping four separate sets of constraints, using broad letter coverage early, and switching to precise, board-specific guesses as patterns emerge.
Quordle in one sentence
Quordle is a four-board word puzzle built around shared turns. You enter one five-letter word, and that same word is scored against four different five-letter answers. The boards do not share letter information: a letter can be green on one grid, yellow on a second, and gray on the other two. Treating the four grids as independent logic problems is the key to understanding the game.
The standard listing gives nine attempts for all four answers together, not nine attempts per board. Every turn therefore has an opportunity cost. An exploratory word can reveal useful letters on several boards, but it also consumes one turn from the common budget. A solving word may complete one grid while teaching you little about the others. Strong play balances those two jobs.

How one Quordle turn is scored
One submission, four independent evaluations
After you submit a legal five-letter guess, Quordle compares that word with each hidden answer separately. Board 1 may find a letter in the exact position, while Board 2 may find the same letter elsewhere or not at all. The color calculation is repeated from scratch for every grid.

This independence explains the most common source of confusion. Suppose your guess contains E. If E is gray on the first board, that means E is absent from the first answer; it says nothing about the second, third, or fourth answers. On another board, E may be yellow or green and remain an important part of the solution.
The shared attempt budget
The nine-turn standard format changes how you value a guess. A word that tests several high-value letters can improve all four boards at once. Conversely, spending a turn on a word that only confirms a letter you already know may leave the least-informed board without enough opportunities. Keep solving progress on one grid in view, but make sure the other three are still receiving useful information.
What the colors mean on each board

Green: a fixed position
A green square supplies the strongest positional constraint. If the third character is green, every surviving answer for that board must use the same letter in position three. You can still use other copies of the letter only when the feedback supports them; do not assume that one green automatically tells you how many times the letter occurs.
Yellow: present, but misplaced
Yellow has two parts. First, the letter belongs somewhere in that board’s answer. Second, it cannot occupy the position in which you tested it. If L is yellow in position two, retain L in the board’s letter inventory and cross out position two for L. A later guess should move L to a different open slot rather than treating yellow as a weak form of gray.
Gray: eliminate it locally
Gray means the letter is not available to that board after the game accounts for any matching green or yellow copies in the same guess. Elimination is local, not global. Maintain four separate gray lists, because a letter removed on Board 1 may be the best unresolved test on Board 4.
The four-part keyboard is a second information panel
Quordle divides each keyboard key into four sections, one for each board. Those sections show the letter’s status independently. A key can therefore display four different states at once: confirmed on one board, misplaced on another, and eliminated on the remaining two.

Read the keyboard as a compact dashboard, not as a single list of usable and unusable letters. Before making a guess, check the section belonging to the board you are trying to advance. If you are testing a word mainly for Board 3, a gray status in Board 1’s slice should not stop you from using that letter. Likewise, a green status on Board 2 does not mean the letter is fixed anywhere else.
Repeated letters require count-aware reasoning
Duplicate letters are where otherwise sound deductions often fail. Quordle-style feedback follows the same per-board counting principle used by Wordle-style scoring: colored copies account for how many instances the answer can support, and gray copies can show that no additional copy is available.
- For one board, first count every green and yellow copy of the letter in the guess.
- Treat those colored copies as the minimum number of times the letter occurs in that answer.
- If another copy of the same letter is gray, interpret it as evidence that the answer has no further copy beyond the colored count.
- Keep the result only on that board; do not transfer the count to the other three.
For example, if a guess contains two A characters, one green and one gray, that board has confirmed one A in the green position and indicates that the second A is not present. If one A is yellow and the other is gray, the answer contains an A, but not two; the yellow position is unavailable for the confirmed A. This prevents the common mistake of either deleting a confirmed letter because one duplicate turned gray or assuming that every copy must appear in the answer.
What makes an opening guess useful
There is no single first word that is guaranteed to be best for every Quordle board set. A strong opener is valuable because of the information it can reveal, not because it solves a particular board immediately. The recommended profile is a five-letter word with several frequent, non-repeating vowels and consonants.
Prioritize coverage over an early solve
Your first word should test letters that are likely to separate many candidate answers. Broad vowel coverage helps reveal the shape of words; common consonants help distinguish otherwise similar patterns. Repeating a letter in the opener usually gives less coverage unless you are deliberately testing duplicate behavior.

Use the second guess to add information
After the first colors appear, inspect all four boards before typing again. If no board has a nearly forced pattern, use a second exploratory word that covers high-value letters missing from the opener. If one board already has several greens and a small set of legal completions, a constraint-respecting candidate can be better than another broad probe.
A useful compromise is to choose a second word that both obeys the strongest known constraints on at least one board and introduces untested letters on the others. Do not force this compromise when it creates an invalid word or ignores a board with an obvious answer.
A practical information-gain framework
When two legal guesses look plausible, compare them against the same five questions. This turns an intuitive choice into a repeatable decision.

Step-by-step method for every game
- Create four ledgers. Mentally or on paper, label four sections for Boards 1 through 4. In each section, keep green positions, yellow letters with forbidden positions, and gray letters. Never combine the ledgers.
- Play a coverage-oriented opener. Choose a legal five-letter word with several common vowels and consonants and few repeated letters. The objective is to obtain a broad first reading from all four answers.
- Transfer feedback immediately. For each board, mark every green position, record every yellow letter and its blocked slot, and add gray letters only to that board’s elimination list. Use the board-specific keyboard sections to verify your notes.
- Check for a forced or nearly forced board. A pattern with several greens, required yellows, and only a few plausible completions deserves a solving guess. Do not solve it reflexively if doing so would leave three boards with no useful information and plenty of uncertainty.
- Choose the next word by information gain. If all boards remain open, test high-value letters not covered by the opener. If one board is constrained, use a candidate that fits its pattern and still avoids wasting known information on the other boards.
- Update counts for duplicates. When a letter appears more than once in a guess, compare all of its colors on each board before deciding whether another copy is possible.
- Triage the boards after every turn. Identify the board with the fewest plausible answers, the board with the most dangerous ambiguity, and the board that is close to completion. Use the next shared guess to address the most urgent combination of those factors.
- Verify before submitting a likely answer. Check every green position, every yellow relocation, each board’s gray list, and any duplicate count. A word that fits Board 1 but violates Board 2’s known yellow is not a good shared guess.
How to divide attention across the four grids
Start broad, then become board-specific
Early turns have the highest value when they reveal letters across multiple boards. Once a board accumulates several greens and yellows, its candidate set becomes more constrained. At that point, broad exploration has diminishing returns for that grid; a precise candidate is usually better.
Do not let the easiest board consume the game
Solving a board can reduce mental load, but it does not end the shared puzzle. Preserve enough turns for the least-informed grids. If Board 1 has a clear completion and Boards 3 and 4 still have no vowels identified, consider whether the next word can test those missing vowels while remaining compatible with Board 1.
Use the hardest board as a source of urgency
The board with the largest unresolved candidate set often determines whether the overall attempt succeeds. Give it priority when a guess can distinguish several of its remaining possibilities without breaking constraints elsewhere. This does not mean ignoring a one-step-away board; it means recognizing that an untested, ambiguous grid needs information before the remaining budget disappears.

Worked example of board-specific reasoning
Imagine that one board shows a green R in position two, a yellow A from position five, and gray letters T, L, and M. The board’s ledger should read: position two is fixed as R; A must occur somewhere other than position five; T, L, and M are excluded. A candidate such as brace would be considered only if its R occupies position two, its A is not in position five, and it does not use any excluded letter.
Now suppose the same submitted guess produces gray A on a different board. That second ledger removes A there, even though A remains mandatory on the first board. The two boards may therefore require opposite treatment of A on the very next turn. Looking only at a global keyboard color would cause an avoidable mistake; the four slices exist precisely to prevent it.
For a duplicate example, imagine a board where a guess contains two S characters, with the first yellow and the second gray. Keep one S in the candidate answer, forbid the yellow-tested position for that S, and do not require a second S. A later word should place S in another legal slot rather than abandoning S altogether.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Using one global gray list. Fix: maintain four elimination lists. Gray is local to the board that produced it.
- Treating yellow as optional. Fix: yellow is a confirmed letter. Move it to another legal position instead of dropping it.
- Leaving greens flexible. Fix: lock every green immediately. A later guess that moves a green cannot be a valid candidate for that board.
- Assuming a gray duplicate means the letter is absent. Fix: first account for any green or yellow copy of that letter on the same board.
- Repeating the same high-coverage opener logic too late. Fix: once patterns are tight, choose a word that satisfies the constraints and separates the remaining candidates.
- Solving one board while ignoring the shared budget. Fix: before each submission, ask which other board will gain information and whether the hardest grid still has a viable path.
- Guessing a familiar word that violates a known yellow. Fix: check every yellow’s forbidden position before submitting, even when the word looks like an obvious answer.
- Assuming the first plausible completion is unique. Fix: list the alternatives that fit the pattern and use a legal discriminating guess when the game still allows one.
When two answers remain
Late in a board’s solve, you may have two or more words that satisfy every recorded constraint. Do not choose solely by familiarity. Compare the candidates’ distinguishing letters and positions. If a legal test word can reveal which branch is correct, use it when the shared-turn cost is acceptable and the other boards are not at immediate risk.
The test word does not need to be one of the final answers. Its value is diagnostic: it should obey all fixed constraints on the board you are targeting, avoid letters already eliminated there, and expose a difference between the remaining candidates. Because the same word is sent to all four boards, confirm that it is also a legal and useful submission for the other grids.

As the budget narrows, change the objective from general discovery to completion. Review each board in order of urgency:

- Is any board one valid word away from completion?
- Which board still has unresolved vowels or major consonants?
- Are there duplicate-letter counts that could invalidate an apparently perfect pattern?
- Can the next submission solve one board while testing a decisive letter on another?
If a board has a nearly certain answer, submit it when delaying would risk losing the opportunity. If several candidates remain, favor a word that reduces the most consequential ambiguity rather than one that merely looks common. Always recheck the other three ledgers before pressing submit; a shared guess can be correct for one grid and still wasteful or illegal for the rest.
Note-taking that prevents cross-board errors
A compact four-column note is enough. Put positions one through five across the top of each board’s section, write greens directly into their slots, list yellow letters beneath the pattern with their forbidden positions, and keep a short gray list to the side. For duplicate letters, add a count such as “one S confirmed” rather than writing only the letter.
If you prefer to work mentally, pause after the colors appear and inspect each keyboard slice in sequence: Board 1, Board 2, Board 3, then Board 4. This deliberate scan reduces the chance that a gray key from one grid will overwrite a yellow or green impression from another.
Is there a universally best first word?
No universal opener is established by the game rules. The useful property is broad, non-repeating coverage of common vowels and consonants, followed by a switch to constrained solving when the feedback supports it. Different answer lists, personal vocabulary, and the distribution of the four hidden words can all change which opener produces the most helpful information.
Think of the first word as an experiment. A word that discovers the vowel pattern on all four boards may be better than one that occasionally solves a single board but repeats letters or leaves key vowels untested. After the first turn, the best choice is no longer an opener at all; it is the word that most efficiently respects and advances the four ledgers.
