Quantum teleportation could support a quantum internet by moving an unknown quantum state between distant quantum devices through shared entanglement and a classical message. It does not transport matter, copy a particle, or send information faster than light. In a network, shorter links would first create entanglement, repeater nodes would extend that entanglement across distance, and endpoint devices would then use teleportation to transfer states for communication, sensing, or distributed computing.

This architecture remains a research direction rather than a deployed global service. Components have been demonstrated separately and in small experiments, but loss, memory quality, detector performance, wavelength conversion, synchronization, latency, and network control still limit scale. NIST’s quantum-network information was updated January 15, 2026; the U.S. Department of Energy’s technology assessment is from December 2024.

What quantum teleportation actually does

Quantum teleportation is a protocol for the nonlocal transmission of an unknown quantum state. The state might be encoded in a photon, an atom, an ion, a superconducting circuit, or another qubit implementation. The physical carrier that originally held the state does not travel to the receiver. Instead, the protocol uses a previously shared entangled pair as a resource.

The sender combines the unknown state with one member of the entangled pair and performs a joint measurement, commonly described as a Bell-state measurement. That measurement destroys the sender’s original encoding and produces a classical result. The sender transmits those ordinary classical bits to the receiver. After receiving them, the receiver applies the operation associated with the result to the other member of the entangled pair. The receiver’s qubit then has the sender’s original state.

Teleportation therefore consumes the shared entanglement and requires classical coordination. The receiver cannot recover the state before the classical result arrives, so the protocol cannot carry a message faster than light. It also does not leave a perfect copy at both ends: the no-cloning principle prevents an unknown quantum state from being copied arbitrarily, and the sender’s measurement removes the original state.

Xiao-Min Hu and coauthors summarized the motivation in their 2023 Nature Reviews Physics review: “Quantum teleportation can be used to overcome the distance limitation in directly transferring quantum states in quantum communication and the difficulty in realizing long-range interactions among qubits in quantum computation.” That description captures teleportation’s networking role: it is a way to use entanglement and classical communication when directly sending a fragile quantum state is impractical.

How teleportation fits a quantum-internet architecture

A future quantum internet would not consist of one uninterrupted beam carrying qubits from one continent to another. It would be a collection of quantum-capable nodes connected by optical or other quantum channels, with classical control links coordinating operations. The network’s core service would be entanglement distribution: creating correlated quantum resources between nodes that may be far apart.

1. Create entanglement on neighboring links

Adjacent nodes attempt to generate entangled photons or matter qubits and establish that the link succeeded. Optical fiber and free-space channels introduce absorption, scattering, detector loss, and environmental noise, so a link may need repeated attempts. A quantum memory can hold a successful state while other links are prepared, rather than forcing every segment to succeed simultaneously.

2. Store and synchronize the successful states

Memories, clocks, control electronics, and classical signaling coordinate which entangled pairs are available. Timing matters because photons may arrive at different moments and memories have finite coherence times. The network must track whether a pair remains usable, where it is stored, and which operation should happen next.

3. Join links with entanglement swapping

Suppose node A is entangled with repeater node B, and B is separately entangled with node C. B can perform a joint measurement on its two local qubits. After the result is communicated and interpreted, A and C become entangled even though they never interacted directly. Repeating this operation across a chain extends entanglement over a distance made from shorter, more manageable segments.

4. Teleport a state between the endpoints

Once the endpoints share entanglement, the sender performs the teleportation measurement on the state it wants to transfer and its half of the shared pair. The classical result travels through the network’s ordinary control channel. The receiver applies the required correction and obtains the state in its local qubit. The result is a transfer of quantum information, not a shipment of a physical object.

Why quantum repeaters are needed

In a direct optical link, transmission probability generally falls rapidly as distance and loss increase. A classical communications repeater can detect a signal, amplify it, and regenerate a clean copy. That strategy cannot be transferred directly to unknown quantum states. Perfect copying is forbidden, and measuring a state to decide what to amplify destroys quantum properties such as entanglement.

NIST’s quantum-memory and repeater explanation states: “Because unknown quantum states cannot be copied with perfect fidelity and because measurement destroys quantum properties such as entanglement, quantum repeaters cannot operate on the same physical principles as classical ones.” A quantum repeater instead prepares entanglement on short sections, stores successful attempts, and uses entanglement swapping to connect sections.

Repeater designs differ. Some rely on matter-based memories that can emit or absorb photons; others use all-photonic measurement and error-management schemes. A repeater is not simply a box that boosts a weak qubit. It is a coordinated quantum system that must manage probabilistic generation, storage, local measurements, classical messages, and often entanglement purification or error correction.

Network hardware and engineering requirements

NIST identifies several technology classes needed for quantum communications and networks. No single component is sufficient; the interfaces between them are often as difficult as the components themselves.

  • Nonclassical photon sources: Sources must produce photons with the timing, wavelength, indistinguishability, and entanglement properties required by the chosen protocol.
  • Single-photon detectors: Detectors need high efficiency, low noise, useful timing resolution, and operation compatible with the channel and memory technology.
  • Quantum memories: A memory stores a quantum state long enough for remote links and classical coordination to complete. Storage time, retrieval fidelity, bandwidth, and multimode capacity determine how useful it is.
  • Repeaters and local processors: Nodes perform Bell-state measurements, routing decisions, entanglement swapping, and possibly error-correction operations.
  • Transducers and interfaces: A memory may operate at a wavelength that is poorly suited to telecom fiber. A source might therefore need to emit photons compatible with both the memory and fiber, or use a frequency-conversion interface.
  • Synchronization and control: Clocks, timing systems, calibration, classical channels, and software coordinate probabilistic events across distant nodes.
  • Error management: Auxiliary protocols can detect, suppress, or correct errors, but they add hardware, communication, and resource overhead.

These are examples of an architecture problem, not a universal specification. Different platforms make different trade-offs among loss, fidelity, operating temperature, conversion efficiency, memory lifetime, and system complexity.

Architecture choices: what can be compared

There is no established champion technology. NIST reports proof-of-principle results across multiple material platforms. A meaningful comparison should examine the complete network path rather than one impressive component.

Comparison axis Memory-based repeater network All-photonic approach
How entanglement is handled Photons are coupled to matter-based memories that store states while links are coordinated. Photonic states, measurements, and encoded resources perform the repeater functions without the same type of long-lived matter memory.
Primary strength Storage can allow asynchronous link generation and coordination. Photons can travel well in fiber and avoid some memory-coherence requirements.
Main engineering concern Efficient photon-memory coupling, storage fidelity, retrieval, and wavelength matching. Large photonic resource states, detector performance, loss tolerance, and demanding optical control.
Wavelength issue Often requires a source compatible with both the memory and telecom fiber, or frequency conversion. Can be designed around photonic transmission, but still depends on source, detector, and fiber compatibility.
Status Multiple laboratory demonstrations; no universal platform has been established. Demonstrated experimentally in specific arrangements, not a deployed long-distance service.

The practical decision variables are link distance, channel loss, entanglement-generation rate, fidelity, memory lifetime, conversion efficiency, synchronization burden, and total operating complexity. A platform that performs well in one laboratory metric may not provide the best end-to-end network throughput.

What evidence exists so far?

2019 all-photonic repeater experiment

A 2019 experiment published in Nature Photonics demonstrated an all-photonic repeater arrangement using a 12-photon interferometer. The authors reported an 89% enhancement in entanglement-generation rate compared with standard parallel entanglement swapping under that experiment’s conditions. The result shows that a particular photonic design can improve a specific generation-rate comparison; it does not establish a deployed network, a universal repeater advantage, or commercial performance.

DOE assessment dated December 2024

The U.S. Department of Energy’s December 2024 Quantum Information Science Research Roadmap proposed Bell pairs per second, written as ebits/s, as a natural measure of network quality. The roadmap also stated that, at the time of publication, no demonstrated repeater surpassed the throughput of an equivalent repeaterless lightpath in end-to-end efficiency. That is a dated state-of-the-field assessment, not a timeless claim about every future experiment.

What could a quantum internet be used for?

Secure communication

Quantum key distribution is one possible application, but it is not synonymous with teleportation. QKD uses quantum effects to establish or distribute cryptographic key material under specified protocol and implementation assumptions. Teleportation and entanglement distribution support a broader family of quantum-information operations. Neither justifies the blanket statement that all quantum communication is “unhackable”; security depends on the protocol, device behavior, authentication, software, and operating environment.

Distributed quantum sensing

Separated sensors could share entanglement or other quantum resources and coordinate measurements. In principle, a network could compare signals from distant locations with correlations unavailable to independent classical sensors. The useful advantage depends on state quality, timing, calibration, environmental noise, and the scientific measurement being attempted.

Linking quantum computers

Teleportation could transfer quantum states or gates between processors, allowing networked machines to share resources or divide a computation. This is different from connecting ordinary servers with a faster data link: the processors must preserve coherence, synchronize operations, and manage errors while the network creates and consumes entanglement.

Long-range interactions among qubits

Teleportation can make two remote quantum systems behave as if they have access to a shared quantum resource without sending the original state directly through the entire path. The 2023 review identifies this as a route around the difficulty of realizing long-range interactions in quantum computation.

What limits a quantum internet?

  • Channel loss: Every transmission attempt can fail, and loss compounds across links unless the architecture uses memories, multiplexing, or error-management techniques.
  • Noise and imperfect operations: Sources, memories, detectors, gates, and conversions introduce errors that reduce fidelity.
  • Memory lifetime: A memory must retain a usable state while other links succeed and classical messages arrive.
  • Interface mismatch: Matter systems and telecom fiber may use different wavelengths, bandwidths, or timing formats.
  • Latency: Classical signals still must travel between nodes before teleportation corrections can be applied.
  • Synchronization: Distributed measurements require precise timing and reliable coordination.
  • Scaling overhead: More nodes create more routing, calibration, failure-recovery, and security-management tasks.
  • Network architecture: Protocols for addressing, scheduling, verification, and resource allocation are still being developed.

These constraints explain why a laboratory teleportation demonstration is not equivalent to a general-purpose quantum internet. A useful network must deliver entanglement at a rate and fidelity that exceed the costs of operating the repeaters and control systems.

Is a quantum internet available today?

No general-purpose, global quantum internet is available. Researchers have demonstrated teleportation, entanglement distribution, quantum memories, repeater elements, and photonic experiments in controlled settings. Those demonstrations establish building blocks, not a consumer network with open access, universal routing, or guaranteed performance.

The near-term research goal is better integration: reliable sources and detectors, longer-lived memories, efficient interfaces, improved error handling, and network protocols that can coordinate many probabilistic links. Progress should be judged with explicit metrics such as fidelity, distance, rate, and ebits/s rather than by the word “teleportation” alone.

How to interpret future claims

When a project announces a quantum-network milestone, check five details:

  1. What quantum state or entanglement resource was generated, and how was it verified?
  2. Were the nodes connected directly, or did the experiment include a repeater and entanglement swapping?
  3. What distance, loss, fidelity, and entanglement-generation rate were measured?
  4. How long did memories preserve states, and how much classical coordination was required?
  5. Was the result a component demonstration, a field trial, or an end-to-end network service?

Keeping those distinctions clear prevents two common errors: treating teleportation as physical transport, and treating a successful laboratory protocol as proof that a worldwide network is ready.
