A quantum memory does not keep a photon sitting motionless in a container. It coherently transfers the photon’s quantum state—its amplitudes, phase, polarization or temporal mode—into an atomic, ionic, crystal or optical-storage system, preserves that excitation for a chosen interval, and converts it back into a photon on demand. The transfer must retain the relationships that make the state quantum; measuring the photon and recreating an ordinary copy would not work.
What a quantum memory actually stores
A photon is a traveling excitation of the electromagnetic field. Its useful information may be encoded in polarization, phase, arrival time, frequency, spatial mode or entanglement with another particle. A quantum memory maps that information to a longer-lived degree of freedom in matter or to a controlled optical delay, then performs the inverse mapping during readout.
For a polarization qubit written as α|H⟩ + β|V⟩, a successful memory preserves both complex amplitudes, including their relative phase. It must also avoid adding enough noise to make the retrieved light indistinguishable from an unrelated background photon. The original photon is absorbed or redirected during storage; the objective is a faithful state transfer, not a classical duplicate. This is consistent with the no-cloning principle: an unknown quantum state cannot simply be copied while leaving the original untouched.
NIST defines optical quantum memory as a device that stores the quantum state of photons and retrieves it with high fidelity on demand. In practice, “memory” covers several families of hardware. An atomic ensemble using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), a trapped ion, a rare-earth-doped crystal and a fiber-loop switch can all be called quantum memories even though their storage mechanisms and engineering constraints differ.

How storage and retrieval work in an EIT memory
EIT is one of the clearest examples because the light-to-matter mapping can be controlled with laser pulses. A typical device uses atoms with three relevant energy levels arranged as a lambda system: a weak signal field carries the quantum state, while a strong control field changes the medium’s optical response.
1. Prepare the atoms and control field
The ensemble is prepared in a suitable ground state. A control laser is applied so that destructive interference between excitation pathways makes the medium transparent to the signal frequency. The control field also changes the signal’s group velocity, allowing a short optical pulse to enter the ensemble without being immediately absorbed.
2. Map the optical pulse into a collective excitation
While the signal pulse is inside, the control field is reduced, switched off or shaped. The photonic excitation is then converted into a collective atomic coherence, often called a spin wave. The excitation is distributed across many atoms with a phase pattern determined by the incoming light. No single atom contains the whole photon state; the ensemble stores a coordinated matter excitation.

During the storage interval, the optical field is absent from the memory’s output path, but the collective coherence remains. Magnetic-field fluctuations, atomic motion, collisions, imperfect state preparation and laser noise can all degrade it. The useful lifetime therefore depends on the material, temperature, geometry, shielding and whether additional coherence-preservation techniques are used.
4. Apply a read pulse
A later control pulse reverses the mapping. The spin wave and read field generate a new optical field whose temporal mode, polarization and phase are correlated with those of the input. Changing the read-pulse timing makes readout on demand rather than at a fixed delay.

A 2024 experiment with independent room-temperature rubidium memories used this approach to store polarization states and retrieve them at selected times. Its dual-rail arrangement represented arbitrary polarization as a coherent superposition of two spatial paths. The experiment also examined interference between retrieved pulses. That setup demonstrates one EIT implementation; it is not a universal recipe for every memory platform.
Why the quantum state can survive the transfer
Preservation comes from a coherent, reversible interaction rather than from measuring the incoming photon. The memory must maintain:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Amplitude ratios: a superposition must emerge with the same relative weights, apart from a known overall loss.
- Relative phase: phase drift between components can rotate a qubit or destroy interference.
- Mode information: the retrieved pulse should occupy the expected temporal, spectral, spatial or polarization mode.
- Entanglement: if the photon is entangled with another system, the joint correlations must remain measurable after retrieval.
Researchers test these conditions with state fidelity, polarization tomography, interference visibility and entanglement measurements. A high retrieval count alone is not proof of quantum preservation: a bright but noisy output can have good efficiency and poor fidelity, while a very clean memory can be inefficient.
Other quantum-memory architectures
| Architecture | What holds the state | Characteristic strengths | Important constraints |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warm or cold atomic ensemble with EIT | A collective spin-wave coherence in atoms such as rubidium or cesium | Controllable readout, compatibility with polarization and temporal modes, operation in warm-vapor or laser-cooled systems | Atomic motion, collisions, control-field leakage and finite coherence time can add noise or loss |
| Trapped ion or neutral-atom memory | An internal state of a confined ion or atom | Very long internal-state coherence is possible; NIST says lifetimes exceeding 30 minutes can be realized in trapped-ion systems | Efficient coupling to telecom-wavelength photons remains a major engineering challenge |
| Rare-earth-ion-doped crystal | Optical or spin coherence of dopant ions embedded in a solid crystal | Long coherence, broad optical bandwidth in suitable designs and integration with waveguides | Efficiency, spectral preparation, cryogenic operation and fabrication quality vary by material and protocol |
| Fiber loop and optical switch | The photon remains in a controlled fiber path for repeated passes | Fiber coupling, broadband operation and direct control of the number of storage cycles | Transmission falls with every pass; it is a delay-and-switch memory rather than a stationary matter excitation |
These categories should not be treated as interchangeable specifications. A long-lived ion memory, a high-bandwidth fiber loop and a room-temperature EIT device solve different problems.
What “on demand” means
On-demand retrieval means the operator chooses when to release the stored state within the memory’s usable coherence window. In an EIT system, the read control pulse sets the release time. In a fiber loop, an electronic switch selects how many circulations occur before extraction. In a crystal or ion system, control pulses address the relevant optical or spin transition.

On-demand control is valuable in a network because photon arrivals are probabilistic. A memory can hold a successful link while a neighboring source, detector or entanglement-generation attempt is still pending. The read time must, however, be balanced against loss and decoherence: waiting longer can reduce fidelity or efficiency even when the nominal lifetime is much longer.
How performance is measured
No single number identifies the best quantum memory. Compare measurements only after checking what was measured, where losses were counted and under which storage protocol.
| Metric | Question it answers | Qualification to check |
|---|---|---|
| Storage-and-retrieval efficiency | What fraction of the input state is recovered? | Determine whether the figure is internal to the memory or end-to-end, including coupling and detector losses. |
| State fidelity | How closely does the output match the intended quantum state? | Look for polarization, phase, temporal-mode or entanglement fidelity, not only a count rate. |
| Storage lifetime | How long can the excitation remain useful? | Distinguish optical lifetime, spin-wave coherence time and a protocol-specific decay constant such as a 1/e lifetime. |
| Bandwidth and pulse duration | Which spectra and temporal widths can be accepted? | A long lifetime does not imply that the memory accepts broadband or ultrashort photons. |
| Noise and signal-to-background | Can the retrieved photon be distinguished from control leakage and spontaneous emission? | Noise can reduce usable fidelity even when nominal efficiency is high. |
| Access and multiplexing | Can readout be timed freely, and how many modes fit? | Count temporal, spectral and spatial modes separately; multiplexing often changes control complexity and cross-talk. |
| Network compatibility | Will it connect to sources, fiber, detectors and transducers? | Wavelength, coupling loss, stabilization and synchronization can dominate a field deployment. |
Published results that illustrate the trade-offs
Fiber-loop storage
Cheng, Evans and Pittman reported 54.1 ± 0.2% pass-through transmission in a fiber-coupled loop-and-switch platform in npj Quantum Information (2025). In the same system, storage efficiency was reported to scale approximately as 0.5^(N+1) for N storage cycles. The work demonstrated high-fidelity storage and retrieval of polarization qubits for active storage times from approximately 40 nanoseconds to 1.5 microseconds. The publisher notes an April 2026 correction and update, so readers should consult the corrected record when using the result.
Integrated europium-doped crystal
The 2025 study A millisecond integrated quantum memory for photonic qubits reported a 1.9 millisecond 1/e lifetime in an integrated 151Eu:Y2SiO5 waveguide. It reported 12.0 ± 0.05% efficiency at a storage time of 1.021 milliseconds. The lifetime and efficiency describe different aspects of performance: the first indicates how the stored signal decays, while the second is the recovered fraction at a specified delay.
Room-temperature atomic memories
The warm-rubidium experiments emphasize selectable readout and preservation of polarization, including interference between pulses retrieved from independent memories. Their value is the ability to buffer random photonic states at room temperature, not a claim of record lifetime or universal efficiency.

Trapped-ion and telecom-linked demonstrations
NIST states that trapped-ion memories can realize lifetimes of more than 30 minutes, while identifying efficient coupling to telecom photons as an unresolved challenge. A 2025 Optica Quantum 2.0 conference abstract by Yang Wang and Mehdi Namazi reported entanglement between a telecom photon and a quantum memory and stated 50% memory efficiency. Because that figure comes from an abstract rather than a detailed full-paper report, it should not be compared directly with independently defined efficiencies from other platforms.
How memories support quantum networks
Quantum-network links are often probabilistic: a source may emit a photon only intermittently, a detector may register it with limited probability, and entanglement-generation attempts may succeed at different times on different links. A memory provides a timing buffer. It can retain a successful state while another link is attempted, then release the state when the network is ready for a joint measurement.
In a repeater concept, two neighboring links are established first. Memories hold the corresponding states until a Bell-state measurement performs entanglement swapping, extending entanglement across a longer distance. The same principle can support long-distance quantum key distribution and memory-assisted measurement-device-independent QKD. The 2024 warm-vapor work discusses buffering random polarization qubits for variable-delay MDI-QKD and Bell-state measurements.
A memory by itself is not a quantum repeater. A practical system also needs reliable photon sources, low-loss telecom transmission, compatible interfaces, efficient detectors, clock synchronization, low-noise control, real-time heralding and a way to stabilize every optical path. NIST describes scalable repeater implementations as difficult, ongoing research rather than routine infrastructure.
Why storage is difficult
Decoherence
Interactions with the environment scramble the phase pattern of the stored excitation. Atomic motion, magnetic-field noise, collisions and temperature changes are common causes. Shielding, cooling, material purification, dynamical decoupling and careful pulse sequences can extend coherence, but each adds hardware or control requirements.

Loss and imperfect conversion
Photons can be lost during coupling, absorption, switching, storage or retrieval. In a loop, every extra circulation adds transmission loss. In an ensemble or crystal, imperfect optical depth and mode mismatch limit conversion. A memory that retrieves only a small fraction may still be useful for a specialized experiment, but network rates fall rapidly when several such stages are cascaded.
Control-field noise
The strong fields used to write and read a memory can leak into the detector or generate spontaneous emission. Filtering and temporal gating help, but filters can also remove part of the desired photon. The relevant question is therefore signal-to-background at the operating wavelength and bandwidth, not simply whether a control pulse exists.
Interface mismatch
A source, memory and detector may operate at different wavelengths or bandwidths. Converters can bridge the gap, but conversion introduces additional loss and noise. Fiber coupling, polarization stability and synchronization are often as important as the storage medium itself.

How to interpret a memory claim
- Identify the platform. Determine whether the result uses an atomic ensemble, ion, crystal, loop or another mechanism.
- Define the stored encoding. Check whether the experiment stored polarization, time bins, phase, frequency, spatial modes or entanglement.
- Read the efficiency definition. Establish whether coupling, switching, detector and filtering losses are included.
- Pair lifetime with delay. A quoted lifetime is not automatically the delay used for the efficiency or fidelity measurement.
- Check noise and verification. Look for fidelity, interference visibility, tomography or entanglement evidence in addition to retrieved counts.
- Assess the network interface. Confirm wavelength, bandwidth, fiber connection, timing control and heralding requirements.
This checklist prevents a millisecond-scale coherence result, a high short-delay efficiency and a long optical delay from being presented as if they were one head-to-head score.
Where the technology stands
Quantum memories are functioning research devices with increasingly integrated and network-oriented demonstrations, but they are not a mature consumer-product category. The strongest results remain specialized: one platform may offer long coherence, another broadband fiber coupling, another room-temperature operation or precise on-demand readout. Engineering a complete, scalable network requires all of those properties—or effective compromises among them—at once.
For that reason, laboratory components such as lasers, vapor cells, optical switches or generic fiber parts should not be treated as plug-in consumer memories. Building and operating a memory requires calibrated optical hardware, control electronics, stabilization and, for many systems, vacuum or cryogenic equipment.
