Quadruped robots are charged in three main ways: remove the battery and charge it separately, connect the robot to its dedicated charger, or return it to a compatible powered dock. Swapping can cut downtime only if a charged, compatible spare is ready. Docking can automate the return-to-charge step, but it requires supported hardware and a configured workflow. Battery, charger, dock, and swap procedures are model-specific; the Go2 and Spot figures below are manufacturer examples, not universal specifications.
What happens when a quadruped robot runs low on battery?
A quadruped’s battery supplies the energy needed for locomotion and onboard systems. When its charge is depleted or too low for the planned work, an operator can generally stop the mission and recharge the robot, replace a removable battery with a charged compatible pack, or send the robot to a compatible dock if its hardware and workflow support that. Those options differ in how much operator involvement they require and whether the robot can keep working while the depleted battery charges.
Battery swapping and charging are related but distinct. A swap exchanges one pack for another; it does not recharge the depleted pack. Off-robot charging takes place after removal, while direct charging leaves the battery installed in the robot and connects the robot to its specified supply. A dock is a charging station that the robot can return to, sometimes using an autonomous docking workflow. These terms describe broad approaches, not interchangeable procedures: the exact equipment and operating sequence depend on the robot model and hardware revision.

With a removable battery, an operator takes out the depleted pack, installs a charged compatible one, and puts the depleted pack on its designated charger. The robot can resume work after the new pack is correctly installed and any model-specific checks are complete. If the robot is in service while the removed battery charges, a spare can reduce the interruption compared with waiting for that same battery to recharge.

The benefit depends on having a compatible charged spare available. A removable battery alone does not provide continuous operation, and swapping does not make charging faster; it moves the charging time off the robot’s work cycle. How many spares an operation needs depends on its schedule, charging access, and the robot’s actual energy use—there is no universal spare-battery count established by the examples here.
Go2 battery versions as an example
Unitree lists two Go2 battery versions: BT2-05, described as the standard battery, and BT2-06, described as the long-endurance version. For the standard battery, the manufacturer lists a rated voltage of 29.6 V, a 33.6 V charge limit, a charging-current range of 3.5–9 A, and capacity of 8,000 mAh or 236.8 Wh. These figures describe the listed Go2 standard battery; they should not be applied to the BT2-06 or another robot without its own specifications. See Unitree’s Go2 battery information.
Unitree also says the Go2 battery includes a battery management system and lists functions for balanced charging, overcharge protection, charging-temperature and charging-current protection, short-circuit and over-discharge protection, storage/self-discharge, and battery-load detection. These are manufacturer-listed functions, not an independent assessment of the system or a substitute for the battery’s operating instructions.

How charging a removed battery works
A removed battery is charged with a charger intended for that battery. Unitree describes its Go2 charger as specifically designed for Go2 batteries and lists a standard charger rated at 33.6 V and 3.5 A, with a stated charging time of 2–4 hours. The Go2 charger page also identifies standard and quick charger versions; the 2–4-hour figure belongs to the stated standard-charger information and should not be treated as the time for every battery and charger combination. A charger’s voltage, current, connector, charging controls, and compatibility matter. Similar-looking packs or plugs do not establish that two chargers are interchangeable. Unitree’s purpose-designed Go2 charger is one example of why matching the charger to the battery matters; Spot has its own battery and charger instructions. Do not adapt a charger or use an improvised connection based on a voltage figure alone.
How direct charging and docking differ
Direct charging
Direct charging means connecting the robot, with its battery installed, to the manufacturer-specified charger or charging connection. Boston Dynamics says Spot users can charge the robot directly or hot-swap batteries. That gives Spot operators a choice between charging the robot itself and replacing a depleted battery, subject to the correct Spot equipment and operating instructions. It does not establish that every quadruped supports direct charging.

Dock charging
A powered dock adds a return-to-station workflow. Spot Dock provides charging and Ethernet connections. Spot locates the dock using a vision tag; in the Spot 5.2 developer documentation, the docking service supports dock and undock commands and reports docking state. Boston Dynamics also describes using multiple docks at a site to extend missions. The dock therefore depends on more than a power connection: the robot needs compatible dock hardware and the appropriate docking workflow. It should not be taken to mean that a robot can autonomously recover from every low-battery situation, find any charger, or resume any mission without setup. Dock compatibility and workflow support need to be verified for the specific robot and site.
What the published battery and charging figures mean
Specifications can differ by product page, battery generation, and documentation version. The following figures are not a single cross-model benchmark. Spot’s public product page and its Spot 5.2 developer documentation give different battery-capacity and recharge-time figures, so keep each set attached to its source and version.

Boston Dynamics’ blog adds a separate, generation-qualified charging claim: newer Spot battery models can charge to full in an hour or less, and the charger display provides real-time charge information. The page is a company blog, and the claim is tied to those newer Spot battery models, not every Spot battery or quadruped. The public product page’s 60-minute recharge figure and the Spot 5.2 documentation’s 120-minute figure should likewise remain attributed to their respective sources rather than reconciled by guesswork. How to choose between swapping, direct charging, and docking
Choose a workflow around the required work cycle and the equipment the robot actually supports. These decision points can help identify the right questions before purchasing batteries or planning a deployment:

If so, determine whether a charged compatible spare can be kept available. Boston Dynamics explicitly describes Spot hot-swapping; do not assume the same capability or procedure for a different model.
- The robot can pause between work periods: Direct charging may avoid handling a removed battery, if the robot supports it and its specified charger is available. Use the model’s charge-time figure only with its stated battery, charger, and source context.
- The robot needs to recharge as part of a route or site workflow: Confirm dock compatibility, required network or power connections, and software support. For Spot, the documented dock uses a vision tag and the Spot docking service; this is a specific implementation, not a general quadruped feature.
- You are estimating how long the robot can operate: Treat published runtime as conditional. For Spot, Boston Dynamics specifically cautions that payload and environmental factors affect runtime. Plan against the actual task and operating conditions rather than assuming a quoted average is guaranteed.
- You need a replacement battery or charger: Match the exact model and battery version, then confirm compatibility in the current manufacturer documentation. Go2’s BT2-05 and BT2-06 are distinct listed versions, and its charger is described for Go2 batteries.
Safe handling and common compatibility mistakes
Use the current instructions for the exact robot, charger, battery, and dock revision. Boston Dynamics maintains separate instructions for Spot itself, the Spot charger and battery, and Spot Dock through its Spot product-safety page. Unitree warns against dangerous modifications and identifies its Go2 charger as purpose-designed for Go2 batteries. Those model-specific instructions should govern the actual removal, installation, charging, and docking procedure.

- Assuming all quadruped batteries are interchangeable: Battery compatibility is model-specific. A matching shape, connector, or nominal voltage does not prove that a pack is suitable.
- Buying a spare without checking the battery version: Confirm the exact robot and battery designation, including whether a Go2 battery is BT2-05 or BT2-06, and verify compatibility with the relevant manufacturer documentation.
- Expecting a swap to save time without a ready spare: A swap only avoids waiting for a charge if a charged compatible pack is available and the manufacturer supports the service procedure.
- Treating a dock as a universal charger: A dock is a model-specific station and may require tags, service support, and configuration. Spot’s documented docking system illustrates these requirements.
- Using an improvised adapter, altering wiring, or opening a battery: The cited manufacturer guidance does not support these workarounds. Use the specified equipment and service instructions instead.
What to verify before planning a charging setup
Before building a schedule or buying additional charging equipment, identify the robot’s exact model and hardware revision. Then check the battery model, whether the battery is removable, which charger is compatible, and whether the published charge time applies to that battery and charger combination. If you are considering a dock, confirm that the manufacturer supports one for that robot and that the required docking functions and site connections are available.
Finally, separate rated capacity and charge limits from operating predictions. Voltage, current, and watt-hours describe electrical specifications; runtime depends on how the robot is used and, as Spot’s manufacturer notes, can vary with payload and the environment. Use the exact model’s current manual for safe operating steps, and treat figures from another model or documentation version as comparisons only—not instructions or promises.
