A temporary HTTP signaling handler in py-libp2p’s WebRTC-Direct work could accept an unauthenticated caller’s declared Content-Length and use it to decide how much request data to buffer. Yash Kumar Saini says the fix capped SDP bodies at 32 KiB and bounded headers by both count and total bytes, rejecting oversized input before reading the body. The reported change concerned a development harness; it should not be taken as confirmation of the repository’s current implementation.
How could a request to POST /sdp exhaust memory?
The endpoint was a temporary signaling harness for receiving SDP offers before a WebRTC handshake. In Saini’s account of the pre-fix code, the handler parsed the request’s Content-Length and passed that value to reader.readexactly(content_length) without imposing a maximum. Any client able to reach the port could therefore declare a very large body, with no authentication gate described before that read.
The risk was not limited to the nominal request size. Buffering a large body consumes memory, and decoding it may create additional copies. The same account describes a header-reading loop with a timeout for each line but no aggregate cap on header lines or bytes. A client could therefore consume resources through headers as well as through the body.

Saini reports that PR #1396 was merged on August 14, 2026, and added these safeguards to the temporary harness. The GitHub pull request could not be independently retrieved for this article, so the implementation and merge details below are attributed to Saini’s account, not independently verified repository facts.

| Input | Reported limit or validation | Reported response |
|---|---|---|
| SDP request body | Maximum 32 KiB; reject a larger declared length before reading the body | 413 Payload Too Large |
| Headers | At most 64 lines and 8 KiB total | 400 Bad Request for excess or unterminated header lists |
Content-Length |
Reject malformed or negative values | 400 Bad Request |
The author says typical SDP offers are 1–4 KiB, and that the 32 KiB ceiling was chosen to reject oversized input before allocating a body buffer. This is the design choice reported for that harness, not a universal limit for every signaling service.
What did the author report in tests?
Saini describes a regression test that checked for a 413 response and less than 1 MiB of additional peak resident memory (RSS) after an oversized request. The article also reports reproduction measurements using Python 3.11 and aiortc 1.15 on a single asyncio event loop. These are author-published figures, not independently verified measurements:

- Quick and easy to install, no expertise required (Please refer to your system's manual for seating and channel guidelines)
| Reported scenario | Before the fix | After the fix |
|---|---|---|
| One 512 MiB malicious body | 1,113 MB peak RSS | 61 MB peak RSS |
| One 1 GiB body | 2,137 MB peak RSS | Request rejected; no post-fix peak figure stated |
| Four concurrent 300 MiB requests | 1,575 MB peak RSS | 88 MB peak RSS |
The author also reports a 0.3 ms rejection time for an oversized request based on its headers. That timing, like the memory figures, is specific to the reported reproduction environment and should not be treated as a general server-performance result.
What does this example mean for request-handling code?
The central lesson is to treat lengths supplied by unauthenticated clients as untrusted input. A limit must be checked before code buffers data according to that length; checking only after reading the body defeats the purpose of the cap.

- Actual memory speed may vary depending on the system, CPU, motherboard, BIOS settings, and supported memory configuration. DDR4 3200MHz modules may operate at lower speeds such as 2933MHz or 2666MHz when supported by the host system. Please check your device specifications and compatibility before purchase.

- Set a maximum body size and reject an excessive declared length before reading or allocating the body buffer.
- Bound aggregate header count and total bytes, not only the time spent waiting for an individual header line.
- Return clear client errors for malformed and excessive input so the failure is explicit and testable.
- Test the rejection path itself, including its status code and evidence that a large body was not buffered.
Saini’s account puts the point succinctly: “trust the Content-Length is never a safe default.” The quote is the author’s statement, not a claim attributed to a protocol standard.
Does this describe py-libp2p’s current behavior?
Not necessarily. The reported change addressed a temporary WebRTC-Direct signaling harness, and the PR page was unavailable for independent confirmation. The account establishes what the author says was changed and measured; it does not establish whether the harness remains in use or what current repository code does. Verify the relevant code at the time you rely on it rather than treating the reported patch as a statement about today’s implementation.
