Enshrouded uses two separate progression layers: your Flameborn character and the multiplayer world. Your equipment, inventory, level and skills follow your character between servers. Discoveries, world quests and other world-state changes belong to the server that stores that world. In practical terms, the character is portable, while the world is shared and persistent.
This distinction explains why you can bring a powerful character into a new Embervale without bringing every completed objective with you, and why a friend who missed a session may need to enable missed quests in the journal.

Every multiplayer session combines a character save with a world save. They interact during play, but they are not the same file and do not move between servers in the same way.

Keen Games’ dedicated-server documentation makes the storage boundary explicit: character save-games are not stored on the dedicated server, while world progression is. A dedicated server therefore preserves the world for the group; it does not become a remote copy of every player’s character.

What your character carries between servers
Equipment, inventory and level
When you join another player’s world, your Flameborn arrives with the equipment, items, experience level and other character-based progress already attached to that character. You can use a developed character in a new world without starting at level one or recreating your loadout.
This portability is useful for trying a friend’s fresh world, moving between different group worlds, or returning after an absence. It also means that a highly developed character can enter a world whose story and discoveries are much earlier in the sequence. The character’s power and the world’s narrative position can be out of sync by design.
Skills and build choices
Skill unlocks are part of character progression, so they travel with the character rather than with the server. Treat build advice as version-specific, however. Update 8, Forging the Path, reworked the skill tree and gear progression. Existing characters had their skill trees reset and received refunded points the first time they loaded after that update. A build guide that predates Update 8 may describe nodes, paths or gear assumptions that no longer match the current game.
What belongs to the multiplayer world
Discoveries and shared world state
The server owns the state of Embervale itself. Shared discoveries, opened or altered world locations and the world’s quest position are tied to that world. If you create or join a different server, you are entering its version of Embervale, not importing the old server’s map history.
For example, finishing a major objective in one group’s world does not turn the same objective into a completed event in a separate world. Your character can still bring its level and gear, but the destination world keeps its own sequence of discoveries and shared content.

Peer-hosted worlds
In a normal co-op session, one player hosts the world. That host’s world save is the persistent record for the group’s shared progression. If the host is offline, the other players cannot enter that particular world unless the group uses another hosting arrangement, such as a dedicated server.
How quests work when players join at different times
Enshrouded was initially designed as a co-op game in which the group moved through the story together, with quests handled mainly at the server level. That model still describes shared-world progression: when the group advances a world quest, the world advances for everyone playing in that world.
The Melodies of the Mire update added an important individual-quest option. Missed Embervale quests can appear in a player’s quest journal, where that player can toggle them on and complete them with or without friends. This is a recovery mechanism for someone who joined late or missed a session; it does not make every quest and every reward completely independent of world state.
Enable a missed quest
- Join the multiplayer world where you want to catch up.
- Open your quest journal.
- Look for missed Embervale quests made available to your character.
- Toggle the relevant quest on.
- Complete the objective while playing alone or with the group, following the quest’s current requirements.
Use this option when one player needs the personal quest experience or reward after the rest of the group has moved ahead. For shared objectives, agree first on whether the group is advancing the world together or allowing one player to handle a catch-up quest separately.
Choosing a hosting setup for your group
The right setup depends less on character progression—which remains portable—and more on who needs access to the world and when.

When a peer host is enough
A peer-hosted world is straightforward for a regular group that schedules the same sessions. The host loads the world, everyone joins, and the group makes shared story decisions together. The trade-off is availability: the world is tied to the host’s sessions.
When a dedicated server helps
A dedicated server is most useful for asynchronous groups. The world remains available without the original peer host, so players can build, explore or complete agreed objectives at different times. Because character saves remain on each player’s side, the server does not replace the portable character layer; it supplies a continuously available home for the shared world.
Set progression rules before the first major quest
Mixed schedules can create confusion if players assume that a quest is personal when it actually advances the shared world. Establish a few rules before anyone pushes a major objective:
- Decide which world is the group’s main Embervale and who can make irreversible story advances.
- Say whether players may complete shared quests while alone on a dedicated server.
- Ask late players to use the missed-Embervale-quest option instead of replaying objectives for the whole group without notice.
- Record the group’s current story milestone in a shared message or server note.
- Keep a separate personal world if someone wants to explore every story beat without affecting the group’s shared sequence.
These rules separate two goals that often conflict: preserving a common story timeline and letting an individual recover missed content.
How party size changes combat and rewards
Multiplayer is not simply solo play with extra weapons. Keen Games says enemy strength scales with group size, and larger parties have a higher chance of finding bonus loot in chests and from bosses. The official Pact of the Flame description presents Enshrouded as supporting up to 16 players.

When comparing group arrangements, evaluate three separate questions: can everyone access the world when they want, who owns the next quest decision, and how will the party-size scaling affect combat and loot? A dedicated server solves access; it does not remove the world-versus-character distinction or the combat scaling.
Update 8 and the problem with old build advice
Forging the Path changed both the skill tree and gear progression. On the first load after the update, existing characters had their skill trees reset and their points refunded. That behavior can look like lost progression if you return after a long break, but the refund is the intended conversion of the old build to the revised system.

A lag spike, rubberbanding or a long loading pause can make a quest or world save appear broken even when the progression data is intact. Keen Games has documented CPU-optimization work for multiplayer hosts and dedicated servers, network changes intended to reduce lag and rubberbanding, and ongoing work on long VFX shader-compilation times and lower-end-PC performance.
Use this diagnosis sequence
- Check whether every player sees the same world state. If only one player is out of sync, leave and rejoin before changing quest decisions.
- Confirm who is hosting and whether the intended world save was loaded. Joining a different world can look like missing progress because that world has its own discoveries.
- On a peer-hosted session, have the host check CPU load and background applications. Host performance affects everyone’s simulation.
- On a dedicated server, verify that the server is running the expected world and that players are connecting to the same instance.
- If movement snaps backward, treat it as a network symptom first: reconnect and test whether the behavior affects all players.
- If the first load after an update shows changed skills, look for the refunded points rather than assuming the character was wiped.
- Allow time for shader compilation after a major update or on a lower-end PC; long visual-compilation pauses are a documented performance issue and are not, by themselves, evidence of lost progression.
Do not assume that a third-party utility will repair a quest or save problem. First identify whether the symptom is a different world, a missed personal quest, a server-availability issue or a performance problem.

Practical examples
You bring a high-level character to a friend’s new world
Your level, equipment, inventory and skills arrive with you. The friend’s world remains at its own discovery and quest stage, so your stronger character does not automatically complete that world’s story.
You miss the group’s weekend session
The shared world may have advanced while you were away. Open your quest journal in that world and look for missed Embervale quests that can be enabled for individual completion. Coordinate with the group before changing shared objectives.
Three friends play at different times
A dedicated server keeps the world available without relying on one peer host. Each friend still logs in with a separate character save, while construction, discoveries and shared world progression remain in the persistent server world.
A returning player sees a different skill tree
If the return follows Update 8, load the character and spend the refunded points in the revised tree. Recheck any build plan against the current update instead of restoring an outdated path by memory.
