Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania demonstrated a stretchable liquid-crystal elastomer membrane whose color changes when air pressure deforms it. The lab-made system produced controllable color pixels, numerals and camouflage patterns. It is a research platform—not a consumer camouflage sheet or a commercially available kit.
How does pressure change the membrane’s color?
The membrane is made from a chiral nematic liquid-crystalline elastomer. Its internal liquid-crystal arrangement reflects light in a way that creates structural color: the color comes from the material’s ordered structure, rather than ordinary pigment. Embedded inflatable air channels deform the membrane when pressure changes. That deformation alters the rotation of the liquid-crystal directors and shifts the reflected color. The team also tuned pixel colors by changing the ratio of the supporting layer’s width to its thickness. That lets different pixels respond with different colors under pressure, rather than making the whole membrane behave as one uniform color patch. The 2022 review discusses this approach.

Color pixels, digits and patterns
The 2021 report describes a membrane that shifted color across the visible spectrum as pressure changed. Demonstrations included color pixels, the digits 0 through 9, and camouflage patterns. These are laboratory demonstrations of a controllable material, not evidence that a finished camouflage product is in use. Nature Materials, 2021

A reported pressure and spectral shift
A 2022 review says the underlying study shifted reflected light from near-infrared to ultraviolet as pressure increased to 9.6 kPa. This figure is the review’s account of that result; it should not be read as proof that every pixel or camouflage pattern demonstrated the entire near-infrared-to-ultraviolet shift. How squid-like is the camouflage?
“Squid-like” describes the inspiration and adaptive-color effect, not a biological mechanism reproduced cell for cell. The membrane changes color through pressure-driven deformation of a liquid-crystal elastomer. Squid and other cephalopods use biological systems; the reported material is an engineered platform that imitates an aspect of their camouflage.

The researchers proposed possible applications such as cryptography, adaptive optics and soft robotics. Those are prospective areas of use, not deployed products or proof of commercial readiness. The 2021 report presents these as potential applications.

How it differs from other cephalopod-inspired research
Later work has explored different materials and ways to control appearance. These studies belong to the broader field of adaptive camouflage, but they are not extensions of the same pneumatic membrane.
