Pokémon card grading is a two-stage service: the company first checks whether a card is genuine and unaltered, then evaluates its condition and seals it in a tamper-evident holder. PSA, CGC, and Beckett use different labels, standards, service tiers, and operating rules, so a PSA 10 is not automatically equivalent to a CGC grade or a Beckett grade. Your best choice depends on whether you want authentication, preservation, display, a personal collection record, or a sale.
Fees, submission availability, declared-value limits, and turnaround estimates below reflect official United States direct-submission pages checked October 13, 2026. They can change, and estimates are not guarantees; verify the live service page immediately before shipping cards.
What a Pokémon card grader actually does
Professional grading begins with authentication. PSA describes checking whether a card is genuine and looking for doctoring such as recoloring or trimming. Only cards considered authentic proceed to numerical grading. The grader then assesses observable condition and overall eye appeal, assigns a grade on that company’s scale, and encapsulates the card in a sonically sealed, tamper-evident case with a label and certification number. See PSA’s process and service terms at PSA’s trading-card grading page.

Condition review normally considers centering, corners, edges, surface, print quality, gloss, stains, and other defects. Some elements are measurable; eye appeal still involves judgment. PSA describes its top grade this way: “A PSA Gem Mint 10 card is a virtually perfect card.” Its published PSA 10 guidance cites sharp corners, strong focus, original gloss, no staining, and approximate centering tolerance of 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse. Those tolerances are PSA’s standard, not a universal rule for every grader. Read the full criteria at PSA’s grading standards.

A numerical grade is a condition opinion, not a promise of a particular selling price. The card’s exact set, number, rarity, language, edition, demand, timing, and the buyer’s confidence in the holder all affect value.
The grading sequence, step by step
- Identify the card and its risks. Record the set, card number, language, variant, and approximate raw value. Look for altered surfaces, suspicious color, trimming, cleaning, stock changes, or an unusual cut before selecting a service.
- Choose a company and tier. Match the tier’s maximum declared or insured value, price, turnaround estimate, and current submission status to the card. A low-priced tier may not accept a high-value card, and a bulk tier may require a minimum number of cards.
- Follow the live packaging instructions. Use the holder and shipping method specified by the company. PSA’s no-grade guidance refers to returning cards in a card saver sleeve; follow the current instructions rather than assuming every grader accepts identical supplies. A semi-rigid trading-card holder made for grading submissions is the relevant accessory category.
- Ship with documentation and insurance. Declare the value accurately, retain photographs and a packing record, and use tracking and insurance appropriate to the card. The service clock may not begin when the carrier scans your parcel.
- Authentication and examination. The company checks authenticity and possible alteration before assigning a condition grade. If the card fails authentication or is outside the service’s numeric-grading rules, it may receive an authentic or no-grade result instead.
- Encapsulation and return. A card that receives a numerical grade is sealed in the company’s holder, labeled, and returned with a certification or order record. Inspect the holder and label when it arrives and keep the submission paperwork.
How PSA, CGC, and Beckett differ
PSA
PSA uses a 10-point scale and publishes detailed condition standards. Authentication precedes grading, and its sequence ends with a sonically sealed, tamper-evident case carrying the grade and certification number. PSA explicitly notes that eye appeal can require judgment even when individual defects are assessed objectively.
CGC Cards
CGC publishes service fees and turnaround estimates for direct submissions, but the fees page used here does not provide a complete grade-by-grade explanation of its labels. Consult CGC’s current grading-scale page before treating a particular CGC label as equivalent to a PSA or Beckett label.

CGC also offers CrossOver. It examines a card in a PSA, Beckett, or SGC holder and removes it for CGC encapsulation only when CGC believes it will receive the same or a higher grade under the ordinary rule. You can select “Cross at Any Grade” to accept a lower grade. The full grading fee applies when a card does not cross under the ordinary rule. Details are on the CGC services and fees page.
Beckett
An indexed Beckett grading-page result describes four subgrades—centering, corners, edges, and surface—and a scale that includes Pristine 10, Gem Mint 9.5, and Mint 9. During the October 13, 2026 check, that page redirected to Beckett’s service notice, so verify the live scale and label details before relying on them.
The current official notice says Express submissions remained available through a temporary form, while Base and Standard card submissions were paused. The form was for submissions to Beckett headquarters in Plano, Texas; Beckett said availability could change with demand and backlog, payment is confirmed after receipt and review, and existing orders continue processing. Check Beckett’s current grading notice immediately before sending a card.

| CGC Unlimited Value | $300 plus 1% of fair-market value | Unlimited value | 2 working days | Direct-submission tier |
PSA says its estimate is not guaranteed and that its service clock starts after the order is received, scanned, or entered rather than necessarily when you mail the parcel. CGC describes its estimate as applying to a submission delivered to its facility that day. Add shipping, insurance, packaging, membership-related charges where applicable, and any selling fees to the per-card price. A single card cannot use CGC Bulk because of the 25-card minimum.
How to choose a company for your goal
Personal collection, preservation, or display
Start with the holder, label design, authentication confidence, cost, and the company’s handling rules. A faster tier is useful only if the additional fee matters to your deadline. If your card’s value is below a tier’s minimum or maximum thresholds, a lower-priced option may be more sensible, provided it is open and the turnaround is acceptable.

Planned resale
Do not assume one company always produces the highest Pokémon price. Search recent completed sales for the exact card, language, set, grade, and grader. Then subtract grading, two-way shipping, insurance, marketplace or payment fees, and the value of waiting for the card to return. No reliable market-wide statistic establishes a permanent PSA, CGC, or Beckett premium for Pokémon cards.
Authentication of a questionable card
Choose a service whose current policies cover the card’s format and value. A card can be authenticated without receiving an ordinary numerical grade, and an altered card may be rejected or assigned a special outcome. If authentication is your main objective, read the no-grade and authentic-result rules before paying for a tier.

- Inspect centering on both sides under even light; do not treat a photograph-based prediction as a guaranteed grade.
- Check each corner and edge for whitening, dents, fraying, or cuts.
- Look across the surface for scratches, print lines, dents, stains, fingerprints, clouding, or loss of original gloss.
- Compare colors, texture, fonts, symbols, and card dimensions with a known genuine example.
- Record the card’s front and back condition with dated photographs before packing.
- Do not trim, recolor, press, polish, chemically clean, or otherwise alter the card. These actions can be evidence of restoration or tampering and can prevent a normal numeric grade.
No-grade, authentic-only, and unusual-card outcomes
PSA lists no-grade codes for trimming (N1), restoration (N2), recoloration (N3), questionable authenticity (N4), altered stock (N5), minimum size (N6), cleaning (N7), miscut (N8), and “Don’t Grade” (N9). PSA says fees still apply for several no-grade reasons; specified minimum-size, miscut, or otherwise ungradable outcomes can have different fee treatment. Review the current submission terms before assuming a rejected card is free.

Hand-cut cards are evaluated according to their issue and visible borders. A cut outside the visible border may be encapsulated as Authentic only, while severe undersizing can prevent authentication. Promos, errors, oversized cards, and other unusual formats should be checked against the live policy of the service and tier you intend to use.
How to calculate the real cost
- Start with the current per-card grading fee and any membership or tier minimum.
- Add outbound and return shipping, declared-value insurance, and compliant holders or packaging.
- Check whether the card’s plausible value exceeds the tier’s maximum; moving to a higher tier can cost more than the initial estimate.
- Budget for a no-grade or authentic-only result, because some fees can still apply.
- For resale, include marketplace, payment, tax, and currency-conversion costs before comparing a graded sale with selling the card raw.
The resulting total—not the headline grading fee—is the amount to compare with the card’s expected benefit from authentication, protection, presentation, or sale.
Turnaround: what the estimates do and do not mean
Turnaround numbers are queue estimates, not promises. They can change with demand, backlog, staffing, and service availability. Confirm whether the provider counts calendar, business, or working days and when its clock starts. PSA’s clock begins after order entry or scanning; CGC’s estimate assumes delivery to its facility. Beckett’s temporary Express-only arrangement means older Base or Standard timelines should not be treated as current.
If you have a fixed sale, event, or insurance deadline, select a currently open tier with enough margin for transit, intake, grading, encapsulation, and return shipping. A tier’s advertised grading days do not represent the complete door-to-door time.
Practical decision checklist
- Is the card genuine, unaltered, and eligible for the selected service?
- Does the tier’s declared-value limit cover a realistic value for the card?
- Is the tier accepting submissions today?
- Can you afford the complete fee, shipping, insurance, and possible no-grade charge?
- Does the estimated working-time window fit your deadline?
- For a sale, have you checked completed sales for the same card, grade, and holder?
- Have you followed the provider’s current packaging and shipping instructions?
The Bottom Line
PSA, CGC, and Beckett all combine authentication with condition assessment, but their scales, labels, prices, limits, and availability differ. Choose the service and tier that fit your card’s value and your purpose, verify the live terms before mailing, and treat any resale premium as a market question to measure for the exact card—not as a guarantee attached to a company name.
