Short answer: Sony has described patent-based systems that could predict a player’s next game action from game-state data, controller timing, camera video, body movement, motion sensors, and audio. Those filings are proposals, not proof that a current PlayStation 5 automatically predicts every movement or that Sony has shipped the feature.
The public record points to two related ideas. One uses a machine-learning (ML) model to infer a player input and provide it to a game. The other predicts a higher-level action, compares that prediction with the player’s recorded input, and can reconfigure controls when the controls do not fit the player’s behavior. A separate embodiment described in reporting would execute a predicted input early to hide part of online latency.
What “predicting player movement” means on PlayStation
In this context, prediction does not mean a console reading your thoughts or guessing every button press perfectly. It means estimating the next input or intended in-game action from information already available to the system.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The prediction target can be a direct command, such as pressing shoot or brake, or a broader action, such as passing in a soccer game or turning into a corner. The distinction matters: a direct-input system could feed a button-like command into the game, while an intent system could help remap controls or select an action without reproducing the player’s exact timing.

Sony’s filings describe trained models that learn relationships between a game situation, a player’s previous behavior, and signals from the controller or surrounding hardware. They are not confirmation of a consumer feature. The US application US20260131234A1 was published on May 14, 2026, and lists Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. as assignee. European application EP4537915A1 was published on April 16, 2025.
The two published Sony concepts
| Application | Prediction target | Inputs described | What the system may do |
|---|---|---|---|
| US20260131234A1 (published May 14, 2026) | A player input to a computer game | Image, motion and audio data; camera video; inertial measurements from an accelerometer, gyroscope or magnetometer; microphone audio | Supply the ML model’s output indicating a player input to the game |
| EP4537915A1 (published April 16, 2025) | A predicted in-game action based on the current situation and prior gameplay | Game data, the first user’s recorded input, and past actions of other users | Compare predicted and recorded behavior, then reconfigure controls when they do not match |
| Related concept summarized by GameSpot on January 14, 2025 | Inputs inferred from a player’s physical movement | Camera observations and machine-learning analysis | Execute a predicted input before the player finishes it to offset some online lag |
These descriptions overlap, but they are not a single confirmed PlayStation product specification. Patent applications commonly present multiple possible implementations, and the applications do not establish that every embodiment will be built or released.
How the prediction pipeline would work
1. Observe the game and the player
The first stage collects a snapshot of the situation. In a sports game, that could include player and ball positions, nearby opponents, the direction of travel, and the sequence of controller buttons. In a racing game, it could include the car’s position on the track, speed, steering timing and proximity to a turn. An action game might expose the character’s position, nearby threats and whether a jump is possible.
The systems can also observe the person using the controller. The US application lists camera video, motion data and microphone audio. Motion data may come from an inertial measurement unit (IMU) containing an accelerometer, gyroscope or magnetometer. A camera could provide body pose or visible hand movement; a microphone could provide audio features. The EP application concentrates on game data and recorded inputs, while its broader architecture includes head-mounted displays and motion-tracking peripherals.
2. Infer the next input or intended action
A trained classifier or multimodal model maps those signals to an action. The model may use historical examples from the same player, patterns from other players, or both. Possible outputs in the patent examples include shoot, pass, lob, slide tackle, turn, accelerate, brake and jump.

The US filing mentions a latent-vector model and a player-based encoder. In practical terms, those components can represent a complex mixture of visual, motion and audio signals in a form the predictor can use, while retaining information about the individual player’s habits. The documents do not publish a consumer accuracy rate, response-time guarantee or list of supported games.
3. Apply the result
Application depends on the embodiment. The system may provide the predicted input to the game, compare it with what the player actually recorded, suggest a different control arrangement, or apply a remapping. In the latency-focused concept summarized by GameSpot, the predicted command could be executed early, before the physical movement or button press is complete.

How prediction could reduce online lag
Online games normally wait for input to be generated, transmitted and processed before the resulting action appears. A pre-emptive predictor attempts to start that chain sooner. If the model sees a player’s movement toward a likely command, it could issue the command before the movement is complete. When the prediction is right, part of the apparent delay is hidden.
This approach is inherently conditional. A wrong early input could cause an unwanted turn, shot or jump, so a practical implementation would need a confidence threshold, a way to cancel or correct speculative actions, or game rules that make a mistaken input harmless. The cited material describes the concept but does not specify those thresholds, correction rules or a measurable reduction in milliseconds.
The lag proposal should therefore be read as a possible latency-masking technique, not as evidence that current PlayStation games predict and execute all player actions.

How the control-reconfiguration idea differs
EP4537915A1 describes a more adaptive use of prediction. The system obtains the current game situation, predicts the first user’s likely action from past video-game data and the past actions of one or more other users, and then checks whether the user’s recorded input matches that prediction.

For example, a player who repeatedly performs a particular action with a different button layout might receive a remapping that better matches the learned pattern. The application presents this as a control-management process, not as proof that Sony will automatically change controls on a retail console.
The patent also describes training with gameplay from multiple consenting players. Developers could submit labeled gameplay data to an external server or API and call the trained model, reducing the processing required on each console. That architecture is a proposal in the application; no public developer API is established by the cited documents.
What signals a predictor could use
- Game-state data: character, player and ball positions; enemy proximity; racing-track position; and other information exposed by the game.
- Controller timing: buttons, sticks, triggers and the timing between inputs.
- Camera and pose: video of the player or the play area, including body movement that precedes an action.
- Inertial measurements: accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer readings from a controller or another motion-sensing device.
- Audio: microphone input listed as a possible source in the US application.
- Historical behavior: prior actions by the same player and, in the European application, actions from other users.
Combining these sources is useful because each signal arrives at a different point in the action. Game state shows what is possible, controller timing shows what has begun, and camera or IMU data may reveal movement before a button is fully pressed. The filings do not establish which combination would be required for a particular game.
Where the machine learning could run
On the console or connected hardware
A local implementation could process game-state and controller data close to the game. That may reduce network dependence and keep the prediction responsive, but it would require suitable processing resources and a model tailored to the game and player.

On an external server
The European application describes an external server and API through which developers submit labeled gameplay data and call a trained model. Centralized processing could reduce per-console workload and make it easier to train on larger datasets. It would also introduce network dependency and require the game to exchange relevant gameplay or sensor data with the service.
The applications allow multiple architectures; they do not announce a shipping service, a required subscription or a public endpoint.

More responsive movement
In a latency-focused implementation, a correct prediction might make a turn, jump or shot appear to begin sooner during an online match. The improvement would depend on the model’s confidence and the game’s ability to tolerate or correct an early command.
Controls that adapt to habits
An intent-based system could notice that a player consistently performs a certain action with a different input pattern and offer or apply a more suitable mapping. That could help players who use unusual layouts or accessibility-oriented controls, although the cited applications do not promise a particular accessibility feature.
Camera- or motion-assisted input
A camera, IMU or microphone could provide additional evidence of what the player is about to do. A camera-based system would need a usable view of the player, and motion-based systems would depend on the sensors available in the connected hardware. The filings do not define a required camera model, room setup or supported accessory list.

Accuracy, errors and player control
Prediction is probabilistic. A player can deliberately feint, change tactics, pause before acting or perform an unusual move that is rare in the training data. Other players’ behavior may improve a model’s coverage while still failing to represent an individual’s preferences.
For that reason, a safe design would need to distinguish between assistance and authority. A recommendation or opt-in remapping leaves the final decision with the player. Automatic application is more intrusive, especially when an early command changes the game state. The patent descriptions include both kinds of behavior in different embodiments, so they should not be treated as a single user experience.
Camera, microphone and motion inputs also raise practical questions about consent, storage and processing. The cited documents identify these signals as possible inputs, but they do not establish a consumer privacy policy, retention period or permission screen.

- Confirmed by the publications: Sony has publicly filed applications describing ML prediction of player inputs or intended actions, using combinations of game data, controller data, camera or motion signals and audio.
- Described as possible behavior: The model could provide an input to a game, compare a prediction with recorded behavior, reconfigure controls, or execute a predicted command early to mask some latency.
- Not established: A current PS5 feature that automatically predicts every movement; a shipped Sony product implementing these embodiments; a guaranteed latency reduction; a public developer API; or support for every PlayStation game.
GameSpot’s January 14, 2025 report made the same essential caution about the camera-based concept: a patent filing does not necessarily indicate that a future product exists.
What developers and players should watch for
For developers, the important design choice is the prediction target. Direct-input prediction is closest to emulating a controller event, while intent prediction can support adaptive controls without taking over every frame. Developers would also need labeled examples, a way to handle uncertain predictions and a clear policy for correcting mistakes.
For players, the relevant hardware categories are a standard PlayStation controller with its buttons, sticks, triggers and motion sensors; a compatible camera or webcam if a game uses visual pose signals; and, in systems that support head and hand tracking, a PlayStation VR headset or similar motion-tracking peripheral. The patent material does not name a required retail product, price or compatibility list.
Bottom line
PlayStation movement prediction is currently best understood as patent-backed research and proposed system design. Sony’s published applications show how an ML model could observe game state and player signals, infer a likely input or action, and either adapt controls or act early to reduce perceived lag. They do not show that a current PS5 is silently predicting every move. Until Sony announces a product, software release or developer interface, treat the technology as a possible future capability rather than an existing console feature.
