No. A PlayStation Plus monthly game is a subscription entitlement, not a permanent purchase. You can download and play it while your membership is active and the title remains available in the service, but adding it to your library does not make it yours forever.
Turning off automatic renewal does not normally end access immediately. Your benefits continue through the end of the payment period you already bought. When that paid-through date arrives, Sony can block monthly games, online storage and online multiplayer, even if a game is still installed on your console.
What a PlayStation Plus monthly-game license actually is
When you claim a monthly game at no extra charge, PlayStation records an entitlement on your account. The entitlement is conditional: it is tied to an active PlayStation Plus membership and to the game’s continued availability in the service. The download is only the software file; it is not proof of permanent ownership.

- Membership gate: your account must have a current PlayStation Plus subscription.
- Availability gate: the game must still be offered under the relevant PlayStation Plus benefit.
If either gate fails, the installed application may remain on the drive but launch access can be suspended. The terms apply to the service as offered in your country and can be affected by console, device, account, age and parental-control restrictions.
Claiming, downloading and buying are different actions

In other words, “in my library” does not automatically mean “owned.” The transaction type shown when you claimed or paid for the item determines the license.
What canceling auto-renewal does—and does not do
Canceling PlayStation Plus normally means disabling the next renewal charge. It is not the same as terminating the current term on the day you press Cancel. Sony’s cancellation guidance says benefits continue until the end of the previously purchased payment period.

Write down the exact expiry date shown in your account before canceling. A one-, three- or 12-month plan runs for the period purchased; the date is more useful than the day you disable renewal. Refund rules are separate from cancellation and are not implied by turning off auto-renewal.

Labels can vary by system software version and region, but Sony provides cancellation controls in these locations:

- Web Account Management: sign in, open the subscription-management area, select PlayStation Plus, and choose Cancel Subscription or the option to turn off auto-renewal.
- PS5: open Settings, go to Users and Accounts, then Account and Payment and Subscriptions. Open Subscriptions, select PlayStation Plus and choose the cancellation control.
- PS4: open Settings, choose Account Management, then Account Information and PlayStation Subscriptions. Select PlayStation Plus and cancel the subscription.
Afterward, verify that the next charge is no longer scheduled and note the displayed end date. If you bought through a third party, the account that owns the subscription—not the console profile currently being used—controls the entitlement.
What stops when the paid period ends
Sony support says that once a PlayStation Plus subscription ends, you lose access to PlayStation Plus benefits such as monthly games, online storage and online multiplayer. The result is broader than a single game lock.
Monthly games
Games claimed at no cost through the monthly-games benefit become unavailable after expiry. Deleting and reinstalling the game does not change the license state. Reinstalling can be useful after renewing, but it cannot convert a subscription copy into a purchase.
Online multiplayer
For games that require PlayStation Plus for online console multiplayer, the multiplayer entitlement ends with the subscription. A game’s own free-to-play exception or publisher requirements can differ; those rules are separate from the monthly-game license.
Online storage
Cloud storage is another subscription benefit that ends at expiry. Keep local copies of important saves and check Sony’s current retention and reactivation terms before allowing a long lapse. Do not assume that an installed save or game file proves that its cloud counterpart remains accessible.

Installed files and offline play
An expired entitlement can leave the application icon and data on the console while preventing launch. Sony’s published pages do not specify one universal offline grace period for every game, console state or license-check schedule. Do not plan on a guaranteed number of offline days; a title may require an online verification before it starts, and behavior can differ by product.

Resubscribing can restore access to an eligible monthly game. Sony’s cancellation information says content downloaded at no cost as part of the subscription is unavailable after expiry and that resubscribing restores the subscription benefits. The restoration is conditional, not a promise that every historical claim will work forever.
- The game must still be supported by PlayStation Plus and available to your account.
- Your renewed tier must include the relevant benefit.
- Regional, account, age and parental-control restrictions still apply.
- If the title was removed from the service or its licensing arrangement ended, renewal may not restore it.
If the game remains installed, access may return after the account license refreshes. Signing out and back in, restoring licenses through the console’s account settings, or reinstalling can help with a synchronization error, but those steps cannot restore a title that is no longer eligible.
Monthly games versus the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog
PlayStation Plus has multiple benefits that are easy to confuse. Essential, Extra and Premium all include the monthly-games benefit. Extra adds the Game Catalog, while Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials and streaming-related benefits. Catalog access is a separate tier entitlement and catalogs change over time.

A game leaving the Game Catalog is not the same event as a monthly-game entitlement expiring, but both can produce the same practical result: the title no longer launches unless you have another purchase license. Catalog availability can change while your subscription is still paid through. Sony’s terms also say that games, online features and other benefits may change and that service availability is not guaranteed.

DLC, add-ons, virtual currency and consumables
Expansion content is tied to the underlying game license more closely than many players expect. Sony’s PlayStation Plus games FAQ states: “If your membership expires, or if the content leaves the service you’ll also lose access to the DLC and add-on content associated with that game.” Access returns after resubscribing or purchasing the title, subject to the content still being available.
The Usage Terms also cover add-ons, virtual currency and other consumables bought separately for a PlayStation Plus game. After a lapse or removal, those items cannot be used unless you renew or buy the same game from PlayStation Store. Buying an add-on alone does not generally replace the base-game license.
Practical examples
- You claim a monthly game, then buy its season pass. If Plus expires, the season pass can be unusable because the associated game entitlement is inactive.
- You purchase a cosmetic pack for a catalog game that later leaves the service. Renewing the appropriate tier or buying the game can restore the relationship between the pack and the base game, if both remain supported.
- You buy virtual currency for a subscription game. Treat it as an add-on to that game’s license, not as an independent right to launch the game after expiry.
Content you keep after cancellation
Not every PlayStation Plus-related item disappears. Sony explicitly says redeemed PlayStation Plus packs and avatars, and games bought with a PlayStation Plus discount, are yours to keep after cancellation. They are purchases or redeemed items rather than no-cost monthly-game entitlements.

Regional, account and service caveats
Availability is not universal. Sony’s terms qualify PlayStation Plus content by country or region, console or device, account type, age and parental controls. A title visible to one account can be unavailable to another, and a tier offered in one market may have different catalog content in another.

For monthly games, the central rule remains the same: an active subscription is necessary, but it is not sufficient if the game is no longer available under the service.

Checklist before you let a subscription expire
- Open your subscription details and record the paid-through date.
- Separate your library into monthly claims, catalog titles and purchased games.
- Check which DLC, add-ons or consumables depend on subscription games.
- Copy important saves locally if you rely on online storage.
- Buy any game you want to keep permanently before expiry, rather than assuming a discount or download creates ownership.
- After canceling renewal, confirm the next charge is disabled and keep the confirmation email or account-screen record.
This inventory prevents the most common mistake: treating every item associated with PlayStation Plus as if it had the same license.
How to diagnose a locked game
The game shows a padlock immediately after expiry
Check the account’s subscription status and the paid-through date. If the term ended, the lock is expected for a monthly or catalog entitlement. Renewing can restore access if the title is still eligible.
You renewed, but the game still will not start
Confirm that you renewed on the same PlayStation Network account that claimed the game and that the renewed tier includes the required benefit. Refresh the account licenses from the console’s account settings, restart the console and retry. If the title has left the service, these steps cannot recreate the entitlement.
The game launches but an expansion is missing
Verify that the DLC was purchased on the same account and that the base game is available through an active subscription or a purchase. Sony’s rule treats associated DLC and add-ons as dependent on the game’s entitlement; buying or renewing the base game may be required.
You canceled but access ended early
Review the transaction history and the subscription end date. Turning off renewal should leave the already purchased term active, but a refund, charge reversal, account change or different purchasing account can alter the result. Contact PlayStation Support with the transaction record if the displayed end date has not passed.
Bottom line
PlayStation Plus monthly games are licensed access, not permanent ownership. Canceling auto-renewal normally lets you keep playing through the end of the paid term; after expiry, monthly games, related DLC and other Plus benefits can be blocked. Renewing can restore an eligible title, while games bought outright, discounted purchases, redeemed packs and avatars remain yours under their separate licenses.
