Player Select is the per-console step that tells Nintendo Switch Sports who is playing. Choose Single Player or Two Players, then choose the Nintendo Switch user account for each participant. This selection does not choose a sport, a controller mode, or online opponents; those decisions appear on later screens.
The same principle applies in every mode. On one Switch, select the people using that console. In LAN Play, every console makes its own Player Select choice before joining the host’s room. The host can start only after all consoles have joined.

What “Player Select” means
Nintendo Switch Sports separates three decisions that are easy to confuse:
- Player Select: which people on this console are participating.
- Sport selection: whether the group will play tennis, bowling, soccer, volleyball, chambara, golf, or another available sport.
- Controller setup: how each selected player will hold and use a compatible controller for that sport.
When the game displays Player Select, first choose the number of participants on the current console. Select Single Player if one person is using that Switch, or Two Players if two people will share it. The game then asks you to select the participating Nintendo Switch user account or accounts.

A user account is not simply a name label. It identifies the player for the session and, when online play is involved, determines which account’s Nintendo Switch Online entitlement is used. Pick the account belonging to the person who will actually play rather than choosing a guest account by accident.
Player Select by game mode
The number of consoles, local participants, room controls, and online requirements change by mode. Player Select remains a per-console decision in all of them.
| Mode | Consoles | Players selected on each console | Host room | Nintendo Switch Online | Opponents |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Play Locally | One | One or two | No | Not required for local play | People sharing the console, plus any sport-specific computer players the game provides |
| Play with Friends | One console for a local session, or participating consoles through the friend-session flow | Choose one or two on your console | Use the session’s on-screen joining controls | Required when the session is online | Friends in the session |
| Play Globally | One console per online participant | Choose the local participant or participants shown by the game | No LAN room | Active membership required for full online play | Online players; without membership, a trial competition against computer competitors |
| LAN Play | Up to four consoles | One or two per console | Yes; one console creates the room | LAN setup is local-network play; follow the game’s current network requirements | People on the connected consoles |
Nintendo Support lists LAN Play as supporting up to four consoles, with up to two players per console and eight players total. That is a current support limit as documented on Nintendo’s support page accessed in 2026; check Nintendo’s instructions again after a game update.

Use this procedure for a local session when both people will play from the same console.
- Start Nintendo Switch Sports.
- Choose Play Locally on the title screen.
- When Player Select appears, choose Two Players.
- Select the Nintendo Switch user account for the first participant.
- Select the user account for the second participant. Each person can use their own account; do not select the same account twice unless the game specifically presents that as an available option.
- Continue to the sport-selection and controller instructions. Follow the holding and pairing directions shown for the chosen sport.
The second player does not get added from the sport screen. If you entered the sport with Single Player selected, back out to the mode’s setup screen and change Player Select to Two Players before continuing.
If the second person does not appear
- Confirm that a second compatible controller is paired or available for the sport. The game may not offer a usable two-player arrangement until the required hardware is detected.
- Return to Player Select and make sure Two Players, not Single Player, is highlighted.
- Choose the second person’s Switch user account when prompted. Selecting only one account leaves the console configured for one participant.
- Read the next controller screen carefully. Supported arrangements differ by sport, so a controller that works in one sport may not be an accepted arrangement in another.
Play with Friends: selecting local participants
In Play with Friends, Player Select still describes the people using your console. Select the local participant count and user account or accounts before joining or creating the friend session. The friend’s console makes its own selection for its local players.
Rank #2
- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
Do not interpret the friend-session screen as a replacement for Player Select. Joining a friend’s session identifies the group you are connecting to; it does not automatically add another person sitting beside you. If two people are sharing your Switch, choose Two Players during the local setup first.
After the session accepts the players, the game moves to sport and controller instructions. Follow those instructions for every selected participant. Some sports can accommodate two local players in ways that others cannot, so the available choices can change after Player Select.
LAN Play: the hidden menu sequence and room process
LAN Play is the option for multiple nearby consoles on the same local network. Nintendo places it behind a special input sequence rather than showing it as a standard title-screen button.
- Start Nintendo Switch Sports.
- On the title screen, highlight Play with Friends.
- Hold L and R, then click in and hold the Left Stick. The menu changes to LAN Play.
- Select LAN Play.
- On each console, choose Single Player or Two Players, based on how many people will play from that console.
- Select the participating Nintendo Switch user account or accounts on each console.
- On the console that will coordinate the match, select Make a New Room.
- On every other console, select Join Room and connect to the host’s room.
- Wait until all consoles and their selected players have joined. The host then selects Play with this group! and chooses a sport.
The host controls when the group moves forward. If the host starts before another console has joined, the missing console will not be part of that match; return to the room stage if everyone needs to play together.
Why a sport may be unavailable in LAN Play
Nintendo says the playable sports are highlighted according to how many players have joined. The selection is therefore not just a list of every sport in the game. A sport can be unavailable because the current group size or console arrangement is not supported for that sport. Confirm the Player Select count on each console and wait for every player to join before judging the highlighted choices.
Planning an eight-player LAN match
The documented maximum is four consoles and eight total players, with no more than two players assigned to any one console. A practical arrangement is four consoles with two participants each, but smaller combinations also fit the limit. For example, three consoles can contribute two, two, and one player for five total participants. Every console still performs its own Player Select step.

Play Globally and the Nintendo Switch Online requirement
Play Globally is the online matchmaking mode. Nintendo Support states: “An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Nintendo Switch Sports online.” The membership must be active for the Nintendo Switch user whose account is selected for online play.
If that account does not have the required membership, Nintendo says selecting Play Globally provides a trial competition against computer competitors instead of full online play. This explains why a player can enter the mode but encounter computer opponents rather than human competitors. It is not a Player Select failure; it is the mode’s entitlement behavior.
Which user should you choose?
Select the person who will actually participate and whose account has the Nintendo Switch Online access you intend to use. If several people are playing from one console, select each local participant as requested by the game. A different account’s membership does not automatically transfer to the account selected for the match.
Controllers after Player Select
Player Select identifies participants; the following screens determine how they control the sport. Nintendo documents support for several arrangements, including:
- Paired Joy-Con 2 controllers.
- Paired Joy-Con controllers.
- A single Joy-Con 2 controller.
- A single Joy-Con controller.
- Joy-Con used with the Leg Strap where the sport and mode support it.
Controller support varies by sport. Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible with Nintendo Switch Sports. If a player is stuck after choosing an account, check the sport’s controller prompt rather than changing the user selection repeatedly.

Soccer’s Leg-Strap option is selected after Player Select, not in the Player Select menu. Nintendo documents two paths:
Rank #4
- 6 sports: Baseball, run's jump, goalkeeper, tennis, bowling & rafting.
- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
- Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.
- More than 15 environments and tons of unlockable items.
- Play Globally: highlight Soccer on the sport-selection screen and press X.
- Play Locally or Play with Friends: press + on the screen that shows how to hold the Joy-Con controllers.
Choose the players and their Switch users first. Change to Leg-Strap Mode only when the later Soccer screen presents the appropriate control option.

“I chose Play Globally but only get a trial.”
Verify that the Nintendo Switch user selected during setup has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Without that entitlement, Nintendo’s documented behavior is a trial competition against computer competitors.
“I cannot find LAN Play.”
Start from Play with Friends on the title screen. Hold L and R, click in and hold the Left Stick, and wait for the menu to change to LAN Play. Selecting Play with Friends normally without the button sequence does not open the LAN menu.
“The host cannot start.”
Check that every intended console has selected its local player count and user accounts, joined the host’s room, and reached the room successfully. The host’s Play with this group! command is the start point after everyone has joined.
“The sport I want is greyed out.”
Check the total joined-player count and the number of players assigned to each console. Nintendo highlights LAN-available sports according to how many players have joined, so the sport list can change as consoles connect or leave.

“The controller works elsewhere but not here.”
Review the sport-specific controller instructions. Nintendo Switch Sports accepts Joy-Con arrangements that vary by sport and does not support Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers or Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers.
