Planetary defense is a staged process, not a single alarm system. Surveys find moving objects, follow-up observations measure them again, orbit calculations map the range of trajectories consistent with those measurements, and risk-monitoring systems test whether any of those trajectories could intersect Earth. As observations accumulate, the estimated probability can rise, fall, or disappear.
NASA’s workflow combines trajectory analysis with physical characterization—such as size, shape, mass, composition, and rotation—so officials can judge both the likelihood of an impact and its possible consequences. Scout provides early screening for unconfirmed candidates; Sentry performs longer-term monitoring after an object is confirmed. The 2022 DART mission demonstrated one possible mitigation technique by changing the orbit of a non-threatening asteroid moonlet.
What planetary defense is trying to determine
A telescope detection is an observation, not a confirmed threat. A survey records an object’s position against the background stars at a particular time. One position, or even a short sequence of positions, cannot establish a precise orbit. The initial task is to determine whether the moving point is a previously known object, a new asteroid, a comet, or an observation artifact, and then obtain enough measurements to calculate an orbit.
Near-Earth objects (NEOs) are asteroids and comets that come within about 30 million miles of Earth’s orbit. That definition includes many objects that will never endanger Earth. “Near-Earth” describes orbital geometry; it does not mean that an impact is expected or even possible.

NASA’s 2023 Planetary Defense Strategy and Action Plan describes an integrated cycle:
- Assess the NEO population and the hazards it presents.
- Search for, detect, and track objects with ground- and space-based observations.
- Characterize their physical properties.
- Plan and coordinate warnings, response, and mitigation.
- Apply a mitigation technique if the assessed situation requires one.
The order is practical rather than strictly linear. New tracking data can send an object back through orbit assessment, while physical observations can change estimates of the damage an impact might cause.
How surveys find asteroid candidates
Wide-field survey projects repeatedly image large areas of sky and use the apparent motion of points of light to identify possible NEOs. NASA’s program descriptions name Pan-STARRS and ATLAS among these survey projects. Survey software compares images taken at different times, links detections that move consistently, and reports candidate observations for additional analysis.

At this stage, an object may have only a short “observed arc”—the interval between the first and latest usable measurements. A longer arc generally provides stronger constraints on the orbit, but the exact improvement depends on the object’s viewing geometry, brightness, measurement quality, and how much of its path is covered.
Survey teams report observations to the Minor Planet Center (MPC), the international clearinghouse for small-body observations and orbit-related data. CNEOS—the Center for Near Earth Object Studies—uses these observations to compute or refine orbits and to predict future positions. The initial survey result is therefore a starting point for a coordinated measurement process, not a final risk declaration.
How follow-up observations turn sightings into an orbit
Follow-up observers point telescopes at the candidate’s predicted location and measure it again, often on subsequent nights. Each additional position helps distinguish among possible orbital solutions. A candidate that cannot be recovered may turn out to be a false detection, an object with an incorrect preliminary orbit, or one that has become too faint or too close to the Sun’s apparent position for practical observation.

When an object is recovered, the new measurements are submitted to the MPC and incorporated into orbit calculations. The process typically involves:
- Linking observations. Analysts determine whether positions from different observatories belong to the same moving object.
- Fitting an orbit. The measured sky positions are used to estimate orbital parameters and the object’s current state.
- Propagating the solution. Software projects the object’s position forward and backward in time, including gravitational effects represented in the calculation.
- Testing residuals. The predicted positions are compared with the observations. Poor agreement signals that more data or a revised linkage is needed.
- Updating continuously. Every credible observation can change the calculated orbit and the set of future paths that remain possible.
Observers do not need to measure an object continuously. Measurements distributed over time are valuable because they reveal how the object moves along its orbit. Radar, when an object is observable and a suitable facility is available, can provide especially precise distance and velocity information; optical observations remain the foundation for many discoveries and recoveries.
Why an orbit comes with uncertainty
An orbit solution is an estimate with an uncertainty region, not a single perfectly known track. Measurement noise, limited observing time, unknown or imperfectly modeled forces, and unfavorable viewing geometry all contribute to uncertainty. CNEOS therefore evaluates a range of possible orbits that are consistent with the measured sky positions.
Those possible orbits can produce different close-approach distances in the future. Most may miss Earth by a wide margin, while a small subset could pass through a region where an impact is geometrically possible. Risk monitoring asks whether any statistically and physically plausible trajectories intersect Earth, then calculates how much of the allowed solution set does so.
This is why an impact probability is not a permanent label attached at discovery. Early observations can produce a non-zero probability that later falls to effectively zero when new measurements rule out the relevant trajectories. In other cases, additional data can temporarily increase the probability by narrowing the solution around an impact-compatible path. The changing number reflects improved knowledge, not an asteroid changing direction in response to the calculation.

NASA’s stated notification framework calls for Planetary Defense Coordination Office notification when a hazardous NEO has at least a 1% chance of impacting Earth over the next 50 years. That is an agency notification criterion, not a universal scientific threshold and not a declaration that an impact will occur. Active object probabilities and risk lists are volatile and must be read with their observation date and uncertainty context.

Scout and Sentry: two stages of risk monitoring
NASA’s CNEOS systems divide monitoring by the object’s status and by how much information is available. Scout handles candidates that have not yet been confirmed as NEOs. Sentry handles confirmed NEOs and searches a much longer future interval.
| System | Object status | Time horizon | Primary purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scout | Unconfirmed candidates listed on the Minor Planet Center’s NEO Confirmation Page | Days to weeks | Preliminary, early risk assessment while observers try to confirm and recover the object |
| Sentry | Confirmed near-Earth objects | Potential Earth close approaches during the next 100 years | Long-term impact monitoring and calculation of impact probabilities |
What Scout does
Scout watches newly reported candidates, many of which are close enough to Earth to appear relatively bright in available observations. It uses the short preliminary orbit to estimate where the object could travel over the next days and weeks. The result helps observers decide how urgently to obtain follow-up measurements and whether a candidate deserves immediate attention.
Because Scout works with unconfirmed objects and short arcs, its results are preliminary by design. A Scout entry can vanish after recovery data show that the object will miss Earth or after analysts determine that separate detections were incorrectly linked. Scout is an early-warning aid for observation, not a final impact verdict.
What Sentry does
Once an object is confirmed, Sentry evaluates possible Earth close approaches over up to 100 years. It propagates the uncertainty in the orbit, identifies future encounters, and calculates the fraction of allowed trajectories that would result in an impact. The system can continue to revise the assessment whenever new observations improve the orbit.
Scout and Sentry are therefore complementary stages rather than competing products: Scout helps answer “Should we observe this unconfirmed candidate immediately?” and Sentry helps answer “Given the confirmed orbit, is there a possible impact in the long-term prediction window?”
Why physical characterization matters as much as the orbit
Trajectory and probability do not describe the consequences of an impact by themselves. NASA’s strategy calls for characterizing an object’s size, shape, mass, composition, and rotation. These properties influence how much energy an object carries, how it might break apart, what warning signs can be detected, and which response options could be practical.

| Information sought | Typical observation contribution | What it helps clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Position and apparent motion | Repeated optical measurements from ground- or space-based telescopes | Orbit, future close approaches, and trajectory uncertainty |
| Size and thermal behavior | Infrared observations, combined with optical data | Physical scale and improved estimates of potential impact severity |
| Surface or internal clues | Spectral or radar observations when the object and facility are suitable | Composition-related properties, surface characteristics, and radar-measured geometry or motion |
| Shape and rotation | Changes in brightness over time, radar, or spacecraft observations | Rotational state, shape-related effects, and mission or mitigation planning constraints |
| Mass | Methods that infer mass from gravitational interaction or spacecraft measurements when available | Impact energy estimates and the response effort needed to alter the trajectory |
No single instrument sequence applies to every object. The useful method depends on brightness, distance, geometry, composition, rotation, and the decision that scientists need to support. A faint object may first receive optical tracking, while a close and favorable target may also be observed with radar or infrared instruments.
From probability to a response decision
Risk assessment combines two questions: how likely is an impact, and what would the consequences be if one occurred? Analysts consider the possible impact corridor, warning time, object size and composition, and the quality of the available observations. Emergency planners then determine what additional data, international coordination, public communication, or mitigation studies are justified.
Planning is progressive. Early work may consist only of requesting additional observations. If the object remains a credible hazard, agencies can coordinate observation campaigns, refine physical models, evaluate mitigation concepts, and prepare civil-protection authorities for possible warnings. A high-quality orbit with a low probability of impact may require less action than a poorly constrained orbit with a similar nominal probability, because uncertainty affects how confidently officials can rule out dangerous paths.
NASA’s strategy also emphasizes national and international coordination. Planetary defense is not a single spacecraft waiting for a command; it is a network of survey observatories, follow-up observers, data centers, scientific analysts, mission teams, and emergency-management organizations.

NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) provided a controlled demonstration of the kinetic-impactor technique. The spacecraft used its DRACO camera and SMART Nav autonomous guidance, navigation, and control to distinguish the two bodies in the Didymos system and steer toward Dimorphos, the system’s approximately 160-meter moonlet.

NASA subsequently confirmed that the impact altered Dimorphos’s orbit. The reported result was a 33-minute change in the moonlet’s orbital period. That number describes the measured outcome for this target and experiment; it is not a universal prediction for how much an arbitrary asteroid’s orbit would change.

Neither Didymos nor Dimorphos posed an impact threat to Earth. DART was therefore a technology demonstration, not a rescue mission. Its value was showing that a spacecraft can autonomously guide itself to a small body and transfer enough momentum to measurably change that body’s orbit. Whether a kinetic impactor would work for a future hazardous object would depend on warning time, mass, structure, composition, shape, rotation, approach geometry, and the amount of trajectory change required.
How to interpret a reported asteroid risk
When you see a risk listing or an announcement about a newly detected object, check four details before drawing a conclusion:
- Object status: Is it an unconfirmed candidate under preliminary Scout analysis, or a confirmed NEO monitored by Sentry?
- Observation arc: How long and how well has the object been observed?
- Prediction window: Is the statement about the next few weeks, a particular close approach, or the 100-year Sentry horizon?
- Probability and consequences: Is the quoted figure an impact probability, a close-approach probability, or a qualitative hazard assessment, and what physical assumptions accompany it?
A probability can be scientifically meaningful while still changing substantially after another night of observations. The responsible interpretation is to treat the current estimate as conditional on the available data and to expect updates as the observed arc grows.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What the complete detection-to-assessment chain looks like
In plain terms, planetary defense works like this: surveys notice moving objects; follow-up telescopes measure them again; the MPC collects the observations; CNEOS computes an orbit and its uncertainty; Scout screens unconfirmed candidates over short horizons; Sentry monitors confirmed NEOs over the next century; physical characterization estimates the potential severity; and coordinated planning determines whether warning or mitigation work is warranted.
That chain explains why a first sighting is not a confirmed threat, why an impact probability can change, and why DART’s successful deflection test does not mean every asteroid can be redirected in the same way. Detection buys information, tracking reduces uncertainty, characterization informs consequences, and mitigation is considered only when the assessed risk and available warning time justify it.
