There is no single brand-wide winner: battery longevity can mean hours per charge or how well a battery holds capacity as it ages. In one 2026 test of three specific flagships, the iPhone 17 Pro Max lasted longest, followed by the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and Google Pixel 10 Pro XL. For long-term aging, Google and Apple publish cycle-life targets for specified generations; Samsung’s cited US guidance focuses on symptoms and diagnostics rather than a comparable cycle-count target.

Two different questions hide inside “battery longevity”

When comparing phones, first decide whether you mean runtime or aging. Runtime is how long a particular phone lasts between charges under a particular workload and test method. Battery aging is the gradual loss of a battery’s ability to hold charge after repeated use. A phone that lasts a long time when new does not necessarily retain its capacity better over several years.

Cycle targets do not translate directly into hours of daily use or a guaranteed number of years. A charge cycle is cumulative use equivalent to a full battery, not necessarily one plug-in session: using half the battery and recharging it counts as half a cycle in Google’s explanation. Two half-cycle uses add up to one complete cycle. How quickly cycles accumulate depends on how much energy you use. Heat, settings, and charging and use patterns also affect actual lifespan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

So a useful comparison keeps the evidence in separate lanes: named-model runtime tests for everyday time between charges, manufacturer cycle targets for stated capacity retention, and the diagnostic features available on the phone you own. The measures can inform the same buying or service decision, but one cannot substitute for another. A cycle count does not tell you how many hours a phone will run tomorrow, and a long runtime result from a new device does not tell you how much capacity it will retain after repeated charging.

Runtime per charge: one 2026 flagship test

Tom’s Guide reported the following battery-test results for three named models. Within this comparison, the iPhone finished first, the Galaxy second, and the Pixel third; the measurements describe these models in that publication’s test, not every phone made by their manufacturers.

Phone tested Reported runtime Position among these three
iPhone 17 Pro Max 17 hours 54 minutes Longest
Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra 16 hours 10 minutes Second
Google Pixel 10 Pro XL 14 hours 3 minutes Third

These are measured hours on a charge, not estimates of how much capacity remains after months or years. A test ranking is most useful when you are choosing between the exact phones tested and care about the conditions represented by that test. Your own result can differ with screen brightness, apps, signal strength, settings, and workload. For a fair buying comparison, look for the same test method applied to the specific models you are considering rather than treating one result as a permanent ranking of three brands.

For example, a reader who regularly streams video or uses navigation over a cellular connection may see a different daily runtime than someone who mostly sends messages on Wi-Fi. That does not invalidate the published test; it means the test answers a controlled comparison question rather than predicting each owner’s exact screen-on time. When two phones are close in a test, practical factors such as the display settings and network coverage in your usual locations may matter more to your experience.

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 battery-life test

Long-term battery aging: what Google and Apple publish

Google and Apple publish design expectations that use a retained-capacity threshold and a cycle count. The figures below are not head-to-head lab results: they cover different model ranges, and Apple explicitly qualifies its figures as applying under ideal conditions. They are expectations, not promises that every phone will reach the stated number of cycles before its battery needs service.

Manufacturer and models covered Published target Important qualification
Google Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro, and Pixel Fold About 800 cycles to up to 80% capacity Google recommends replacement below 80% capacity or at 800 cycles.
Google Pixel 8a and later About 1,000 cycles to up to 80% capacity Google recommends replacement below 80% capacity or at 1,000 cycles.
Apple iPhone 14 models and earlier 80% of original capacity at 500 complete cycles Apple states this target is under ideal conditions.
Apple iPhone 15 models 80% of original capacity at 1,000 complete cycles Apple states this target is under ideal conditions; do not apply it to older iPhone generations.
Samsung Galaxy No comparable general cycle-count-to-capacity target stated on the cited US guidance Samsung’s guidance instead describes aging symptoms and directs owners to diagnostics and support.

Google’s newer Pixel target and Apple’s iPhone 15 target share a 1,000-cycle figure, but that does not establish that those phones age identically: the stated targets, conditions, model scopes, and methods are not a controlled comparison. Similarly, Samsung’s lack of a numeric target on the cited support page does not show that Galaxy batteries age faster or slower. It means that a like-for-like number is not available from that page.

Apple notes that actual battery performance depends on how the phone is used and charged. Google’s figures also describe design expectations, not an individual battery’s guaranteed service life. Treat cycle counts as context for a particular generation, not as a countdown to failure. Google characterizes its cycle estimate as approximate, and the battery’s actual state can differ from early health estimates based on laboratory results.

  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

The threshold is also not a claim that a battery suddenly stops working at 80%. It is a stated capacity reference used in the manufacturers’ guidance. A battery below a stated threshold may still function, while a phone with a higher displayed estimate can still merit attention if it repeatedly shuts down or behaves abnormally. Use the phone’s supported health information and symptoms together rather than treating any one number as a complete diagnosis.

Apple summarizes the variability this way: “Your own battery’s lifespan will vary depending on how you use your device as well as the settings you choose for it.” Google’s Pixel guidance says that when capacity is labelled “Reduced,” it recommends replacing the battery. Those are company statements about their own devices, not a shared cross-brand standard.

How to check battery condition on your phone

Google Pixel

  1. On a Pixel 8a or later, open Settings > About phone > Battery information to find the cycle count.
  2. Open Settings > Battery > Battery health to see the health status.
  3. If the capacity label says “Reduced,” Google recommends considering battery replacement. The displayed capacity is an estimate; Google says early health estimates are based on laboratory results and may differ from the battery’s actual state.

The cited Google documentation does not list battery-health status for Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8, or Pixel 8 Pro. A missing status on those models should not be mistaken for a diagnosis that the battery is either healthy or faulty. The documented cycle-count and health-status menus apply to Pixel 8a and later; check the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming that every Pixel exposes the same fields.

Samsung Galaxy

  1. Open the Samsung Members app.
  2. Go to Support > diagnostics, then choose Battery status.
  3. Use the diagnostic result alongside the phone’s behavior. Samsung notes that menus and settings can vary by model and software version; contact Samsung support or a service center if problems persist.

The Samsung guidance does not provide a universal Galaxy cycle counter or a general numeric capacity threshold comparable to the Pixel and iPhone targets above. Samsung describes the battery as a consumable component that naturally degrades over time. Its guidance offers a way to check status and identify possible problems, rather than a cycle-count schedule that predicts when every Galaxy battery should be replaced.

Apple iPhone

  1. On iPhone 15 and later with iOS 17.4 or later, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. The screen shows maximum capacity, cycle count, manufacture date, first-use date, and a replacement recommendation.
  2. On iPhone 11 through iPhone 14, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.

Apple’s battery-health information differs by generation and software. If your model or iOS version does not show the same fields, use the path Apple documents for that device rather than assuming that a missing field has a particular meaning. The expanded details listed above are specifically for iPhone 15 and later running iOS 17.4 or later.

When battery wear may justify service

Battery age is only one possible explanation for shorter runtime. Start with the phone’s available health indicator or diagnostic, then consider whether there is a persistent pattern rather than a single bad day. Samsung identifies fast drain after charging and unexpected shutdowns—especially in cold conditions—as possible signs of battery aging. Those symptoms are reasons to investigate, not proof that the battery alone is responsible.

  • Pixel: Google recommends replacement below 80% remaining capacity or at the cycle threshold for the relevant generation. On supported models, the health label “Reduced” is the signal Google associates with considering replacement.
  • iPhone: Apple says increasingly frequent charging can be a signal to seek service. For its built-in batteries, Apple recommends service through Apple or an authorized service provider.
  • Galaxy: Use Samsung Members diagnostics and seek Samsung support or a service center when age-related symptoms persist.

Replacement cost, eligibility, and service availability depend on the exact model and region; the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal price. Confirm local options with the manufacturer or an authorized provider before deciding. If the phone shuts down unexpectedly or its battery behavior changes sharply, do not rely solely on a cycle count to rule out a service issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A service decision should therefore consider three things: the phone’s reported condition, the symptoms you are experiencing, and the repair options available for that specific model where you live. A cycle figure is useful context, but it is not a required waiting period. Conversely, a single short-runtime day does not automatically mean a battery replacement is needed. If a diagnostic indicates a problem or the same symptoms persist, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider to assess it.

Pixel 6a owners: check the model-specific program

The Pixel 6a has a separate, model-specific exception. Google identified certain devices as requiring a mandatory software update to reduce potential battery-overheating risk. For impacted devices, battery-management features activate after 400 cycles and can reduce battery capacity and charging performance. This applies to identified affected devices, not all Pixel 6a phones and not Pixel batteries generally.

The program’s stated registration period for support options ran for one year from the initial software release on July 8, 2025; Google says those options ceased to be available after July 8, 2026. Because eligibility was limited by affected device, country, and inspection conditions, Pixel 6a owners should check Google’s current Pixel 6a Battery Performance Program page for any applicable remedies or local rights.

What affects the result, and what you can do

Heat and charging conditions

Google advises charging Pixel phones in a cool place, around 25°C (78°F), and using a compatible USB-C Power Delivery (PD) or Programmable Power Supply (PPS) charger. That is manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee that a particular charger or charging habit will prevent battery wear. Before buying a charger for any phone, check the exact model’s supported charging standard and power requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility matters: the guidance is for a compatible charger, not a promise that any USB-C accessory provides the same charging behavior. Check the phone maker’s specifications for the particular model and use a charger that meets them. Charging equipment cannot reverse capacity loss that has already occurred, and no charger choice should be presented as a way to guarantee a certain cycle life.

Usage and settings

Apple says battery lifespan varies with how the device is used and the settings selected. In practical comparisons, screen brightness, network conditions, apps, and workload can all change how long a phone lasts between charges. This is why a result from one lab or publication should not be read as a prediction for every owner—or as evidence of long-term capacity retention.

Read symptoms with diagnostics, not in isolation

Samsung’s guidance treats a Galaxy battery as a consumable that degrades with use, while also directing owners to device diagnostics. A one-off period of quick drain is less informative than recurring symptoms alongside the diagnostic result. Across all three platforms, use the indicators available for the exact model and software version, then seek manufacturer service advice if the concern persists.

How to choose between Pixel, Galaxy, and iPhone for battery longevity

For a buying decision, compare the same kind of evidence at the same level of detail. Start with the exact models and the way you use a phone; do not turn a runtime test of three flagships into a verdict on entire product families.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. For longest time between charges, compare runtime tests of the specific models under the same method, settings, network conditions, and workload. The 2026 test above is a useful snapshot for its three named phones, not a universal ranking.
  2. For stated aging targets, note the generation, cycle count, retained-capacity threshold, and any ideal-condition qualifier. Google and Apple provide generation-specific targets; Samsung’s cited US page does not provide a directly comparable general cycle target.
  3. For owner visibility, check whether the device exposes cycle count, maximum capacity, a health label, or a diagnostic state. The available information differs by model and software version, so the operating system’s menu matters as much as the brand.
  4. For eventual repair, check authorized service availability, cost, and eligibility for your exact model in your region. These details change over time and are not established by the cited guidance.

A buyer who prioritizes the longest result in the cited three-phone test has a clear answer for those models: the iPhone 17 Pro Max. A buyer prioritizing documented cycle targets should compare the applicable generation-specific figures, while recognizing that they are not a cross-brand durability trial. For Galaxy, the available evidence here is practical diagnostics and symptom guidance rather than a directly comparable numeric target.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which phone battery lasts longer over time: Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, or iPhone?

There is no evidence here for a universal brand winner. For runtime in Tom’s Guide’s 2026 test, the iPhone 17 Pro Max lasted 17 hours 54 minutes, the Galaxy S26 Ultra 16 hours 10 minutes, and the Pixel 10 Pro XL 14 hours 3 minutes. For aging, Google and Apple publish generation-specific cycle targets, while Samsung’s cited US guidance focuses on symptoms and diagnostics. Runtime and capacity retention are different measures.

How many charge cycles does a Pixel battery last?

Google’s design expectation is about 800 cycles to up to 80% capacity for Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold, and about 1,000 cycles for Pixel 8a and later. Google defines cycles cumulatively: using half a full charge and recharging counts as half a cycle. These are design expectations, not guarantees for an individual phone.

How do I check battery health on a Galaxy or iPhone?

On Galaxy, open Samsung Members, go to Support > diagnostics, and select Battery status; menu labels can vary by model and software. On iPhone 15 and later with iOS 17.4 or later, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health for maximum capacity, cycle count, dates, and a replacement recommendation. iPhone 11–14 use Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I replace my phone battery?

Use your model’s health indicator or diagnostic, consider recurring symptoms, and check with the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Google recommends considering replacement when supported Pixel health status says “Reduced,” and gives generation-specific 80% capacity and cycle guidance. Apple says increasingly frequent charging can be a reason to seek service. Samsung flags fast drain and unexpected shutdowns as possible aging signs. Costs and eligibility vary by model and region.

Does Samsung publish a Galaxy battery cycle-life target comparable to Pixel or iPhone?

The cited Samsung US support guidance does not state a general cycle-count-to-capacity target. It explains signs of battery aging, including fast drain after charging and unexpected shutdowns, and recommends checking Battery status in Samsung Members or contacting support if issues persist. The absence of a number on that page does not show that Galaxy batteries age faster or slower.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 test of three named flagships, the iPhone 17 Pro Max had the longest runtime, followed by the Galaxy S26 Ultra and Pixel 10 Pro XL. For aging, compare the exact generation’s published target: Google cites about 800 or 1,000 cycles to up to 80% depending on Pixel model, while Apple cites 500 cycles for iPhone 14 and earlier and 1,000 for iPhone 15 models under ideal conditions. Samsung’s cited US page offers diagnostics and symptom guidance, not a comparable general cycle target. Check your own model’s battery information and local service options before deciding on replacement.
