Photonic-crystal colour is structural colour: periodic micro- or nanoscale structures interact with visible light to select wavelengths for reflection or transmission. To tailor the colour, designers adjust the structure’s scale and arrangement, choose materials with suitable optical properties, and—in responsive designs—account for stimuli such as temperature or viewing angle. There is no universal recipe for a target colour: the result depends on the material, geometry and optical conditions.
How do photonic crystals create colour?
Unlike colour specified solely by a dye or pigment, structural colour arises from how light interacts with physical structure. In a photonic crystal, periodic units—such as particles or alternating layers—affect which wavelengths are reflected or transmitted. Changing the units’ dimensions or arrangement changes that optical response.
Photonic crystals are one route to structural colour, not a synonym for every structural-colour mechanism. Thin-film interference, plasmon resonance, guided-mode resonance and Mie resonance are distinct effects, even though they can also produce colour. The review “Recent advances in photonic crystal with unique structural colors: A review” surveys photonic-crystal materials and approaches.

Structure and dimensions
The periodic structure is the central design lever. Its scale and arrangement determine how it interacts with visible wavelengths. A one-dimensional example is a Bragg stack: alternating layers with different refractive indices. Such stacks are relatively simple, and their optical properties can be predicted more readily than those of some complex structures.

The appropriate layer thicknesses or particle dimensions cannot be specified from a desired colour alone. They depend on the material system, geometry and optical conditions; the review literature cited here does not provide a target-colour calculation or universal dimensions.
Material properties
Material and geometry are linked choices. A 2023 review covers monodisperse inorganic nanoparticles, polymer nanoparticles, inorganic/organic core-shell nanoparticles and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The materials’ optical properties affect the response of the assembled structure, so a design cannot be transferred between material families by changing dimensions alone.

Stimuli and viewing conditions
Some photonic crystals are designed for a fixed colour under specified conditions; others change their optical response. Viewing angle can affect appearance, and responsive systems may react to solvents or other chemical conditions, ions, pH, biomolecules, temperature, mechanical or magnetic stress, or light. These are examples across different designs—not a list of stimuli to which any one crystal necessarily responds.
Which fabrication approaches suit different needs?
Fabrication choices shape what can be assembled or patterned, the substrate a structure can use, and whether it can be made flexible or responsive. The reviews describe several routes, but do not provide a quantitative scorecard that ranks them across resolution, cost, throughput and yield.

| Approach | What the reviews describe | Useful consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Bottom-up self-assembly | Assembly of particles into periodic structures; the review characterizes it qualitatively as advantageous in cost, processability and batch scale. | Consider when assembling colloidal particles is appropriate. The stated advantages are not numerical guarantees and do not establish a universal best method. |
| Template-assisted assembly | Template induction is among the approaches discussed for assembling colloidal particles. | Relevant when a template is part of the desired assembly process; comparative performance figures are not stated in the review evidence cited here. |
| Inkjet printing and drop coating | Both are described as ways to assemble or deposit colloidal materials for photonic crystals. | Assess against the intended pattern, substrate and production requirements; no cross-method quantitative ranking is reported. |
| Flexible-substrate assembly and polymer integration | A 2024 review surveys colloidal-sphere assembly on flexible substrates, polymer packaging and polymer-based direct assembly. | Relevant when flexibility or a polymer-based structure is required; the route still needs to be matched to the target geometry and response. |
| Nanoimprinting and 3D printing | Both appear among the methods surveyed for flexible, self-supporting photonic crystals. | Compare their suitability for the required patterning and substrate rather than assuming either is best for every structure. |
The 2023 review describes bottom-up methods as offering qualitative advantages and says top-down microprocessing is not typically used in the photonic structures it discusses because of cost and production-efficiency constraints. That is the review authors’ general characterization, not a rule for every photonic-crystal design or use case.
Should the design use fixed or responsive colour?
Choose fixed colour when the appearance should remain stable
A fixed-colour design is the more direct choice when the intended purpose is to display a selected structural colour rather than signal a changing condition. Its colour should still be understood in relation to the viewing and optical conditions for which the structure was designed.

Choose a responsive design when colour change is part of the function
A responsive structure can make an environmental or applied change visible through a shift in optical response. The stimulus must be selected as part of the material and structural design; a system responsive to one condition cannot be assumed to respond to another.

A specific demonstration illustrates what is possible without establishing a general production benchmark. The 2009 Nature Photonics paper “Structural colour printing using a magnetically tunable and lithographically fixable photonic crystal” reports high-resolution patterning of multiple structural colours within seconds through successive colour tuning and fixing, using one material and maskless lithography. Those capabilities and timing belong to that reported demonstration, not to photonic-crystal fabrication as a whole.

Where might tailored photonic-crystal colour be used?
Reviews identify sensors, displays, anti-counterfeiting inks, textiles, smart windows and biomedical applications as potential areas. Responsive colour is particularly relevant where a change could indicate humidity, a magnetic field or another environmental condition. These are research and application directions; the reviews cited here do not establish that every use is commercially mature or specify product-level performance.
Quick Recap
How to frame a photonic-crystal colour design
- Define whether the desired colour should be fixed or change in response to a stimulus.
- Specify the optical conditions that matter, including viewing geometry where relevant.
- Choose a material family and periodic structure together, rather than treating them as independent selections.
- Match the fabrication route to patterning, substrate, flexibility and production needs.
- Validate the particular design against its intended conditions; the reviews do not supply a universal target-colour recipe or quantitative ranking of fabrication methods.
