GPS is one way a phone estimates its location; “location” is the result the phone shares with apps and services. Depending on the device, settings, and surroundings, that estimate may combine satellite signals with Wi-Fi, cellular networks, Bluetooth, or onboard sensors. So a phone can sometimes show a location even when GPS reception is weak or blocked.
What “location” and GPS mean
GPS is a satellite-based positioning system. A phone with GPS hardware can use signals from GPS satellites to help calculate where it is. “Location” is broader: it is the position estimate that the phone’s operating system or a service makes available to an app.
That estimate may use GPS alone, or combine it with other information. Android devices with Google Play services can use available Wi-Fi access points, mobile network towers, GPS, and sensors such as accelerometers, barometers, and gyroscopes. Apple says Location Services can use cellular, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth information when permitted. Not every phone has or uses every source. Google’s Android location settings guide and Apple’s explanation of Location Services describe these sources.

Why a phone can show your location indoors
GPS works best when the phone can receive satellite signals. Walls, vehicle roofs, tall buildings, mountains, and other obstructions can block or weaken the line of sight. Apple notes that finding satellites can take several minutes and that Wi-Fi or cellular information may be used to determine position when GPS satellites are not visible.

- 🔊 Visualize Distance – Visualize distance using UWB technology within Bluetooth range, allowing you to immediately see the distance
Other sources can help fill in the picture. For example, a phone may use nearby Wi-Fi access points or mobile network information, along with available sensors, to estimate its position when satellite reception is poor. The result may be less precise or less available than it would be with strong satellite reception; there is no single accuracy figure that applies to every phone and setting. Apple’s guidance on GPS and obstructions and Google’s description of Location Accuracy explain these dependencies.
Does turning off GPS turn off phone location?
Not necessarily. GPS is only one potential input to a location estimate. If other location sources and the relevant system and app permissions remain available, a phone may still estimate or provide a location without GPS. The exact result depends on the platform, device, settings, and signals available. Turning off a general location setting or denying an app permission is different from disabling one source used to estimate location.

Do not assume that switching off a setting prevents location use in every circumstance. Apple notes that emergency calls may use location even when Location Services is disabled. Apple’s Location Services privacy guidance describes this exception.

Location settings and app permissions are separate controls
On Android
Android’s Location Accuracy control affects whether the device can use additional available sources to estimate location. App-level permission controls whether a particular app can access location, and whether that access is precise or approximate. On Android 12 and later, users can manage precise location for an app; the exact menu path varies by Android version and device. Google’s current instructions are in Manage your Android device’s location settings.

On iPhone
Location Services is a system setting, with access managed for individual apps. You can also turn off Precise Location for an app so it receives an approximate location instead. Apple’s guide, Control the location information you share on iPhone, explains these controls. GPS hardware availability is device-specific; Apple identifies GPS availability on iPhone and iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular models.

A map’s blue dot is the software’s current location estimate, not proof that the phone is reading GPS alone. Its position can change as the device gets new information or as signal conditions change. In Apple Maps, the circle around the dot indicates uncertainty: a larger circle means the estimate is less certain. The estimate’s precision depends on the phone, surroundings, available signals, and settings.
