PC gaming handhelds have improved, but four areas still determine whether they feel like good portable PCs rather than merely small gaming computers: battery efficiency, handheld-first software, sustained performance per watt, and value for money. The gaps vary by device, and a larger battery or faster chip alone does not solve them.
1. Longer battery life through better efficiency
Battery life is shaped by both battery capacity and the work a game asks the system to do. A demanding title at high resolution and frame rate can drain a handheld quickly; lowering graphics demands or targeting a more modest frame rate can reduce power use. Capacity is only one part of the equation, so watt-hours do not tell you how long a particular game will run.
Microsoft’s September 2025 development guidance says games are not traditionally optimized for battery life. It recommends that developers test on representative Windows gaming handhelds and offer settings that scale demand while preserving gameplay and the overall art style. Per-game profiles and system-level controls can help players balance image quality, performance, and efficiency. Microsoft Learn’s handheld game-development guidance describes these approaches; it is development advice, not a measured runtime comparison between devices.

ASUS lists a 60 Wh battery for the ROG Xbox Ally and an 80 Wh battery for the ROG Xbox Ally X, announced in 2025. Those are manufacturer specifications, not observed playtime figures. ASUS’s product overview also presents improved battery life as part of the newer models’ positioning.

The improvement the category needs is a combination of efficient chips, sensible default power profiles, and games that make it easy to choose settings suited to portable play. Useful runtime comparisons must specify the game, graphics settings, resolution, frame-rate target, brightness, and power mode; without those conditions, a single battery-life number can mislead.
2. A more coherent handheld-first software experience
A handheld has different interface needs from a desktop PC. Players often navigate with a controller, read text on a small screen, and expect to suspend a game and resume without fuss. A launcher or gaming overlay can make Windows easier to use, but it does not automatically make the whole system feel like one product.
In its October 2025 review of the Ally X, PC Gamer praised the device’s contoured grips while criticizing the lack of a fully unified software experience. That is one reviewer’s assessment of one device, not a finding about every Windows handheld. Still, it points to a broader design challenge: device controls, operating-system menus, launchers, and game storefronts need to work together rather than make the player switch between separate layers.

Better handheld software should make common tasks straightforward with a controller: finding and launching games, changing performance settings, managing updates, and returning to play after sleep. It should also make clear which settings apply globally and which apply to a particular game. These details matter as much as a headline processor specification when a device is used away from a desk.
3. Better sustained performance per watt
Peak performance is not the same as useful portable performance. A handheld has to balance frame rate, image quality, heat, fan noise, and battery drain in a compact body. A device that runs a game well only at a power level that quickly drains its battery is less useful on the go than its peak specifications suggest.
Microsoft recommends testing on representative handheld hardware and tuning settings for battery-powered systems. This matters because a game’s performance depends on more than the chip: resolution, graphics settings, power limits, and optimization all affect the result. Better game-specific profiles could let a player choose a stable frame rate and suitable visual quality without repeatedly adjusting multiple settings by trial and error.

Features intended to improve perceived smoothness also need to work well in actual play. PC Gamer reported visual artifacts from frame-generation features during its Ally X testing. That observation is specific to the reviewer’s test and device; it does not establish that every implementation produces artifacts. It does underline why performance improvements should be judged by image quality and responsiveness as well as a displayed frame-rate figure.
For meaningful comparisons, reviewers and buyers need like-for-like conditions: the same game, graphics preset, resolution, frame-rate target, power mode, brightness, and plugged-in or battery status. The available sources do not establish a controlled cross-device benchmark under identical conditions, so they cannot support a category-wide performance winner.

Handhelds should be judged by the practical gains a higher price buys: better performance at a stated power level, longer runtime in real games, a more comfortable design, a better screen, or less software friction. A faster chip or larger battery matters only if it improves the experience enough to justify the added cost.

PC Gamer described the Ally X as powerful and comfortable, while questioning its value against lower-cost alternatives in its October 2025 review. That conclusion reflects the reviewer’s assessment at the time, not a current price comparison across the market. Prices and availability change, and the evidence cited here does not establish today’s market-wide pricing.
Published specifications help explain what a buyer is paying for, but they are not a substitute for real-world comparisons. Xbox Wire’s June 2025 announcement listed the ROG Xbox Ally with a Ryzen Z2 A, 16 GB of memory, and a 512 GB SSD, and the Ally X with a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24 GB of memory, and a 1 TB SSD. Both were announced with 7-inch 1080p displays at 120 Hz. Those are announced model specifications, not proof that one is the better value for every player. Xbox Wire’s announcement provides the model details.
A fair value comparison also considers comfort and display quality. In the Ally X review, PC Gamer praised the contoured grips but criticized the display; those are reviewer findings and preferences, not controlled category-wide results. Weight, grip shape, screen characteristics, storage expansion, storefront compatibility, and sleep/resume behavior can all change how much a device is worth to a particular player. There is no established single winner across these factors without current prices and comparable testing.
