Paleontologists do not reconstruct an extinct animal by simply filling gaps in a skeleton with artistic intuition. They build a chain of inferences: first establishing what happened to the remains, then preparing and identifying each fossil, comparing it with better-preserved specimens and living anatomy, testing functional ideas with tracks, wear patterns, imaging or models, and finally labeling which parts are fossils, casts, calculated restorations or educated guesses. A jaw fragment can strongly constrain evolutionary relationships while revealing almost nothing certain about an animal’s skin color or behavior.

Reconstruction is an evidence ladder, not a single leap

A mounted skeleton or life illustration usually combines several kinds of information. Some statements are direct observations—for example, that a particular tooth has a certain shape or that a joint surface is preserved. Others are inferences based on comparison, mechanics or probability. Still others, such as color patterns, are artistic proposals made where evidence is absent.

Evidence layer What researchers can examine Typical confidence
Preserved fossil Bone or tooth shape, surface texture, breaks, microscopic wear and chemical or sediment context Highest for the feature actually preserved
Comparative reconstruction Position of a fragment, proportions, joint relationships and likely muscle attachments based on related specimens Often strong for constrained anatomy; depends on the quality of the comparison
Functional inference Likely diet, posture, gait or force using teeth, tracks, joints, CT data and mechanical models Testable but indirect; several explanations may fit
Soft-tissue and appearance proposal Skin, muscles beyond attachment marks, color, pattern and behavior Variable to speculative when direct impressions or exceptional preservation are lacking

The stages overlap. A discovery’s geological setting can change whether bones are treated as one individual; preparation can reveal a joint that changes identification; and a digital model can expose a skeletal arrangement that cannot work mechanically. The final result should preserve those distinctions instead of presenting every part as equally certain.

1. Establish what happened at the site

Taphonomy separates an animal from an accumulation

Taphonomy examines the interval between death and fossilization. Currents, transport, burial speed, scavenging, trampling and sediment chemistry can disarticulate a carcass, break bones, move elements apart or selectively destroy small and fragile parts. Consequently, fragments found close together are not automatically the skeleton of one individual.

Dinosaur National Monument provides a clear example. The National Park Service describes a bonebed in which river transport moved many bones toward a bend or sandbar. Isolated teeth and tooth-marked bones occur there as well. Those observations help researchers ask whether an element was carried from elsewhere, accumulated after several deaths or modified by scavengers before burial. Orientation, abrasion, weathering, sediment type and the position of each bone are recorded before a reconstruction is attempted.

Context determines what a fragment can represent

Field notes, photographs, measured positions and mapped sediment layers preserve information that disappears once a fossil is removed. Researchers use that record to distinguish a connected skeleton from a time-averaged assemblage and to identify sampling biases. A collection dominated by durable jaws, for instance, may reflect transport and preservation rather than the animal’s actual body proportions.

2. Prepare and conserve the fossil

Removing matrix exposes anatomy

Most fossils remain partly embedded in surrounding rock, or matrix. Preparators select mechanical, pneumatic, chemical or supporting techniques according to the hardness of the matrix and the fragility of the fossil. They remove material incrementally, stabilize cracks and document every exposed surface. Preparation may reveal a suture, tooth root or muscle-attachment scar that is invisible in the field.

Conservation limits what can be tested

Fossil material can be brittle, compressed or chemically altered. A preparator therefore avoids treating the specimen as an experiment that can be repeatedly handled or loaded. Consolidants, jackets and archival records protect the original, while high-resolution photography, surface scans and casts provide safer working copies. A cast or digital replica can be used for display or modeling, but it is not itself the original fossil.

3. Identify the fragment and its anatomical position

Shape and joints provide the first constraints

Paleontologists compare a fragment with complete examples of the same species, close relatives and relevant living animals. They examine overall geometry, thickness, openings, ridges, tooth arrangement and surface texture. Joint surfaces are especially informative: their curvature and orientation indicate how one element met another and can rule out an otherwise plausible placement.

The Australian Museum describes comparison with complete specimens as an initial step in deciding whether remains match a known species. A fragment may instead represent a new species, a previously unknown part of a known animal or an element that cannot be assigned confidently. Identification should therefore include a stated level of certainty rather than a forced species name.

Comparative anatomy supplies proportions, not a license to copy

Related animals can indicate how vertebrae, limbs or jaws were arranged, but evolutionary differences matter. A modern analogue may share a joint plan while differing in muscle size, posture or soft tissue. Researchers use multiple specimens and, where possible, measurements from the same growth stage to avoid importing the anatomy of one animal wholesale into another.

4. Rebuild the skeleton while marking missing pieces

Articulated bones anchor the reconstruction

Preserved contacts between bones, matching joint surfaces and repeated patterns across specimens establish the strongest skeletal placements. Disarticulated elements can be arranged by size, symmetry and articulation. Proportions are estimated from repeated individuals rather than from a single unusually small, large or immature specimen whenever the sample permits.

Attachment marks reveal some soft-tissue geometry

Roughened patches, ridges, pits and flanges can indicate where muscles, tendons, ligaments or cartilage attached. These marks constrain the origin and insertion of a structure, but they rarely specify its complete shape or thickness. A smooth surface is not proof that no muscle was present; preservation and remodeling can erase such clues.

Mounts may combine originals, casts and sculpted fills

Exhibition skeletons commonly use original fossils for some elements and casts or sculpted replacements for missing ones. The Smithsonian has noted that older mounts sometimes mixed bones from different individuals. If those bones differ in size, the resulting posture and proportions can be distorted. A responsible label identifies original material and reconstructed portions, and it explains when elements come from separate specimens.

5. Test how the animal might have lived

Teeth and microscopic wear inform diet

Tooth shape can distinguish slicing, crushing, piercing or grinding adaptations, while microscopic wear records contact with food or grit. These clues support dietary hypotheses but do not produce a complete menu by themselves. Jaw mechanics, tooth replacement and the local environment are considered together.

Tracks constrain gait and posture

Footprints preserve a moment of movement. Trackway spacing, pace, rotation and depth can indicate whether an animal walked, ran or changed direction under particular substrate conditions. Tracks are not a direct movie of locomotion: sediment properties, speed and the possibility that different animals made similar prints must be evaluated.

Exceptional fossils extend evidence beyond bone

Eggs and nests can provide reproductive clues; skin impressions and feathers can preserve external coverings; gut contents can identify material swallowed shortly before death. Such finds are rare and local to the individual or event preserved. They can constrain a feature directly without making every other aspect of the animal known.

CT scans and digital models test internal and mechanical hypotheses

Computed tomography can reveal internal cavities, tooth roots, pneumatic spaces and hidden fractures without cutting the specimen. Researchers can turn those scans into digital models, reconstruct missing surfaces transparently and test joint motion or estimated forces. A model tests the assumptions built into it; it does not directly record how the extinct animal moved or fed.

6. Decide what incomplete fossils can still tell us

An incomplete specimen may be highly informative for one question and nearly useless for another. A distinctive jaw can support an evolutionary placement even when the limbs are absent. Conversely, a well-preserved limb may constrain locomotion while saying little about color, social behavior or growth rate.

A Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County report dated January 31, 2022 described a study using more than 6,500 fossil squamate specimens—lizards, snakes and extinct relatives. In that tested group, incomplete skeletal representations did not mislead the researchers’ interpretations of evolutionary relationships. The same report noted that almost two-thirds of the surveyed lizard fossils were jaws and palate. That proportion describes the survey, not all fossil collections, and the result should not be generalized to every isolated fragment or every biological question.

As Hank Woolley, a graduate student-in-residence at the museum’s Dinosaur Institute, put it: “This is exciting, because results like ours increase the scientific value of incomplete specimens housed in museum collections, and that allows us to include more of Earth’s extinct biodiversity as we continue to piece together the past.” The practical lesson is to match the specimen to the question instead of demanding a complete skeleton before accepting any conclusion.

7. Communicate uncertainty feature by feature

Use an evidence label for every visible feature

  • Observed: directly preserved in the fossil or an associated trace, such as a tooth edge, joint surface, feather impression or track.
  • Inferred: reconstructed from comparison, attachment marks, symmetry, mechanics or repeated specimens.
  • Supplied: added by an artist or preparator where evidence does not determine a unique result, such as an exact color pattern or facial expression.

Confidence is not one percentage

The Australian Museum characterizes some physical traits, including approximate size and aspects of movement, as easier to determine than growth rates and behavior. It describes color and pattern reconstructions as educated guesswork when direct evidence is unavailable. A single skeleton can therefore have high confidence in bone placement, moderate confidence in muscle contours and low confidence in skin color. Reporting confidence by feature is more honest than assigning the entire reconstruction one accuracy score.

Question a reader can ask Why it matters
Is this element an original fossil? Original material carries specimen-specific evidence; a cast reproduces another object.
Are all bones from one individual? Mixed individuals can create impossible proportions or a misleading age combination.
What fixes this bone’s position? Joint fit, symmetry, comparison and site context provide different strengths of support.
What evidence supports the soft tissue? Impressions and attachment marks are stronger than analogy alone.
Is the claim direct or modeled? Models explore consequences of assumptions; they do not turn hypotheses into observations.

8. How to read a skeleton mount or life reconstruction

  1. Read the specimen label for the individual number, geological formation, locality and whether the mount combines specimens.
  2. Look for terms such as “cast,” “reproduction,” “sculpted,” “composite” or “reconstructed.” These identify additions that are not original fossil.
  3. Compare the scale and maturity of adjacent elements. Abrupt size changes may indicate a composite mount or a reconstruction that needs explanation.
  4. Separate skeletal evidence from the surrounding life scene. Plants, skin, color, posture and behavior may be interpretive additions even when the bones are authentic.
  5. Ask which observation would change the reconstruction. A new articulated specimen, trackway, skin impression or scan can strengthen or overturn a particular inference.

Common failure modes and how scientists avoid them

Assuming nearby bones belong together

Transport and scavenging can create an attractive but false association. Mapping the deposit and examining abrasion, orientation and tooth marks helps detect this problem.

Copying a close relative without checking differences

Shared ancestry provides a starting framework, not an exact template. Researchers compare several relatives and use the fossil’s own joints and proportions wherever possible.

Treating an artistic completion as a measured result

Illustrations must distinguish preserved anatomy from inferred muscles and supplied color or pattern. Multiple plausible appearances may fit the same skeleton.

Confusing a successful model with proof

A digital or physical model can show that a posture is mechanically possible. It does not establish that the animal used that posture, especially when muscle properties, soft tissues or behavior are uncertain.

Using incompleteness as an all-or-nothing test

Incomplete fossils should be evaluated against the specific question. The squamate study’s evolutionary result demonstrates usefulness in a defined dataset, not universal reliability for every reconstruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The defensible end product

A defensible reconstruction is a documented hypothesis with visible boundaries. It identifies the fossils, records geological context, explains comparative choices, separates original material from casts and sculpted fills, and states which functional and appearance claims remain uncertain. The most complete picture is not necessarily the most detailed one; it is the one whose detail matches the evidence.
