Paleontologists do not identify a bite mark from a hole or groove alone. They assess a feature’s shape, dimensions, surface, location on the bone, relationship to nearby damage, and fit with the specimen’s anatomy and context. A likely tooth trace can show that an animal interacted with bone; identifying the animal, and deciding whether it killed or scavenged the animal, usually requires further evidence.

What counts as evidence of a bite mark?

A suspected bite mark is a feature on bone whose form and context are consistent with contact from teeth. Paleontologists may describe such features as tooth traces. They can include pits or punctures, elongated furrows or scores, and, in some cases, fine striations associated with serrated teeth. Crushing or impact damage can also support a tooth-trace interpretation. None of those features is conclusive in isolation: a natural opening, a pathological change, a fracture, or damage from excavation and preparation can look confusingly similar.

The interpretation becomes stronger when independent observations point in the same direction. For instance, the dimensions and margins might fit a puncture, the bone’s location might be plausible for a tooth contact, and nearby traces might form a coherent pattern. If the feature instead matches normal anatomy or crosses another surface feature in a way more consistent with preparation damage, the bite-mark explanation weakens. The task is not simply to find a resemblance to a tooth mark; it is to compare explanations and judge which one best accounts for all the evidence.

A 2026 PLOS ONE case study of a Cretaceous Edmontosaurus annectens bonebed lays out criteria for assessing perforations and cautions that normal neurovascular openings and pathological lesions can be mistaken for tooth traces. It also notes that healing can remodel a genuine mark, changing or partly obscuring its original appearance. That is why both the feature and the surrounding bone need to be examined.

How paleontologists assess a suspected trace

There is no single visual test that settles every case. A practical workflow combines documentation, measurement, close inspection, comparison with alternative causes, and a confidence-calibrated interpretation. The exact sequence and methods depend on the specimen and question; the steps below synthesize the criteria and approaches described in paleontological and archaeological studies rather than prescribe a universal protocol.

  1. Document the feature before interpreting it

Photograph the feature and record where it sits on the bone, its orientation, and its relationship to other visible marks or damage. The record should make clear whether the suspected trace is isolated, part of a repeated pattern, or connected to channeling. Position matters: the same-looking opening may be more or less persuasive as a tooth trace depending on whether it corresponds to a normal anatomical feature.

  2. Describe and measure its geometry

Record shape, length, width, depth where it can be assessed, and the form of the margins. A caliper can provide dimensions such as mark length; a fossil-bone survey reports using digital calipers for this purpose. Measurement documents a feature and makes comparisons more precise, but it does not diagnose its cause. A length measurement alone cannot distinguish a tooth score from a crack or a preparation mark.

  3. Inspect surface texture and neighboring features

Close visual examination, and microscopy in specialist work, can reveal surface details that are hard to assess unaided. Look at texture, striations, crushing, and the relationship between the suspected trace and nearby marks. A sequence of features may be more informative than one mark because it provides a pattern to compare; however, a pattern still has to be assessed against alternative explanations and the specimen’s context.

  4. Compare the feature with the bone itself

Assess whether the mark matches the bone’s normal morphology, whether the surrounding bone shows remodeling or healing, and whether fracture or other damage makes the margins difficult to interpret. A real trace can be altered by healing, so a softened or remodeled edge does not automatically rule out tooth contact. Conversely, a natural foramen or lesion should not be relabeled as a tooth puncture just because it is hole-shaped.

  5. Test alternatives and use context

Compare tooth contact with plausible anatomical, pathological, taphonomic, and preparation-related explanations. Consider the mark’s position, its relationship to fractures or other surface features, and whether similar traces recur on associated specimens. Assemblage context is part of diagnosis, not decoration: it can support an interpretation or expose a mismatch. Marks on badly fractured bone warrant particular caution because fracture may distort or obscure the feature being evaluated.

  6. State the conclusion at the level the evidence supports

Describe what is observed, then distinguish observation from interpretation. If several independent features agree, a tooth-trace interpretation may be well supported. If key details are missing or competing explanations remain plausible, report the ambiguity rather than forcing a definite label. This applies both to identifying a trace and to attributing it to a particular animal.

How bite marks differ from look-alikes

Alternative explanations should be compared using the same criteria as the tooth-trace hypothesis: geometry and surface texture, anatomical plausibility, relationships to fractures or other marks, bone remodeling, and fit with the specimen’s context. The table summarizes the distinctions researchers need to test; it is not a visual key that can identify a feature without examining the fossil.

Possible explanation What to examine What the evidence can establish
Tooth trace Shape and proportions, depth and margins, surface texture, neighboring marks, anatomical position, and evidence such as striations or crushing. A combination of compatible features can support tooth contact. A single pit, groove, or striation does not establish it by itself.
Normal anatomy Whether the opening or feature fits the bone’s normal morphology and location, including the possibility of neurovascular openings. Anatomical fit can explain an apparent puncture without requiring a bite. Hole-like form alone is not enough to distinguish the possibilities.
Pathology or healing The feature’s morphology and signs of bone remodeling; consider whether healing could have altered a genuine trace. A lesion can resemble tooth damage, while remodeling can obscure an actual trace. Bone response must be interpreted alongside the feature’s other properties.
Fracture or other surface damage How the feature relates to fractures and the condition of the bone, especially when it is badly fractured. Damage can complicate interpretation or obscure margins. The relationship between features matters more than treating each mark as isolated.
Excavation or preparation Fine morphology, position, cross-cutting relationships with other surface features, and assemblage context. A 2019 Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports study of air-scribe damage emphasizes these combined criteria. Preparation damage is a plausible alternative to test, not a default explanation.

What tools can—and cannot—do

Tools help make observations more detailed and reproducible; they do not replace comparative reasoning. Their value depends on what question they answer. A measurement can document size, magnification can expose texture, and three-dimensional surface analysis can quantify shape. None alone tells a researcher which animal made a mark or what happened to the animal whose bone bears it.

A 2017 Journal of Human Evolution methods study proposed a systematic approach and reported correspondence between its method and an experienced analyst’s macroscopic identifications on the fossil sample it examined. That result supports the approach as a useful method; it does not show that 3-D measurement alone can identify every mark or its maker.

Methods are strongest when they complement one another. For example, a researcher can record a feature’s dimensions, inspect fine morphology, and compare its placement and relationships with other features. The conclusion should still reflect what those observations establish—and what they do not.

What a bite mark can reveal about the animal interaction

A well-supported tooth trace is evidence that an animal’s teeth interacted with bone. Repeated traces, their location, crushing, striations, and the wider assemblage can help researchers assess whether the evidence fits feeding or scavenging. Those interpretations are built from multiple observations rather than inferred from a single mark.

A mark by itself generally cannot show whether the trace maker attacked live prey or fed on an animal that had already died. The 2020 PLOS ONE study of Jurassic theropod marks discusses feeding, scavenging, and possible cannibalism as interpretations that depend on assemblage evidence. The careful conclusion is therefore limited: the trace may support a feeding interpretation in context, but it does not, on its own, prove how or when the animal died.

Different traces also provide different kinds of information. Pits and punctures describe localized contact; furrows or scores record more elongated damage; striations may preserve details associated with serrated teeth; and crushing or impact can support an interpretation involving forceful contact. These observations can help characterize the interaction, but they are not a one-feature method for reconstructing a complete event.

Why identifying the animal that made the mark is harder

Attributing a trace to a particular animal requires a further inference beyond deciding that it is likely tooth damage. Researchers can compare mark form and spacing with known tooth morphologies, including patterns associated with serrations or denticles. Yet the mark left by a tooth depends on how it contacted and was used on the bone, so one taxon can produce a range of trace forms.

A 2010 Palaeontology study of mammalian tooth traces on dinosaur and other Late Cretaceous vertebrate bones explicitly cautions that a taxon can generate varied marks and avoids definitive taxonomic assignments when the evidence is insufficient. The responsible wording may therefore be “consistent with” a type of tooth or “likely made by” a particular group, rather than a categorical identification. If the fossil mark is incomplete, altered, or compatible with more than one tooth form, the maker may remain unknown even when tooth contact itself is well supported.

There are thus two separate confidence judgments: confidence that a feature is a tooth trace, and confidence about which animal made it. The second should not inherit certainty automatically from the first. A strong trace diagnosis may still support only a broad or qualified attribution.

How to read a paleontologist’s conclusion

Look for a conclusion that connects observations to interpretation and acknowledges relevant alternatives. A persuasive account should explain which features support tooth contact, how anatomy or pathology was considered, and whether fracture or preparation could affect the reading. It should also distinguish a likely interaction from a stronger behavioral claim, such as identifying a killer or proving cannibalism.

  • Observation: The description of the mark’s shape, measurements, texture, location, and relation to other features.
  • Interpretation: Whether those observations support a tooth trace more strongly than anatomical, pathological, fracture-related, or preparation-related explanations.
  • Attribution: Whether the trace can be matched to a maker, and how specific that identification can reasonably be.
  • Behavioral inference: Whether the wider assemblage supports feeding or scavenging, without claiming more about the timing or cause of death than the evidence allows.

The most reliable reading is one in which the certainty of each claim matches its evidence. A fossil can preserve compelling evidence of tooth contact while leaving the exact trace maker or the circumstances of the interaction unresolved.
