Large dinosaur fossils are not usually dug out as complete, clean skeletons. Paleontologists first locate promising rocks, expose bones slowly, document their position, stabilize fragile surfaces, and remove them inside protective blocks of surrounding rock. In the laboratory, preparators open those blocks and identify the fossils. Scientists then estimate age primarily from the fossil-bearing rock and its relationship to dated layers, rather than routinely radiometrically dating the dinosaur bone itself.

The process is a chain: geological prospecting, controlled exposure and mapping, stabilization and jacketing, transport, laboratory preparation, identification, and geological dating. Each stage protects information that can be lost if a specimen is treated like an ordinary object.

How do paleontologists find dinosaur fossils?

Prospecting begins with geology, not random digging. Teams study geological maps and look for exposed sedimentary formations of the right age. They also consider the ancient environment represented by those rocks. Floodplains, river channels and other settings that could bury animals quickly are often productive because rapid burial can protect bones from weathering and scavengers.

A formation’s reputation can guide a search, but it does not guarantee a discovery. Earl Douglass selected northeastern Utah partly because the Morrison Formation was already exposed there and known to contain fossils. His work eventually led to the Carnegie Quarry at what is now Dinosaur National Monument. Discovery still depends on recognizing a fragment at the surface, tracing it into a hillside and deciding whether it belongs to a larger deposit.

What crews look for on the surface

  • Weathered bone fragments or distinctive textures protruding from slopes.
  • Exposed sedimentary layers that match a fossil-bearing formation.
  • Channel, floodplain or overbank deposits capable of burying remains rapidly.
  • Clusters of fragments that may indicate a larger bone or articulated skeleton below.

Finding one fragment does not prove that a complete animal lies underneath. Erosion may have removed most of a skeleton, or the fragment may have been transported from elsewhere. Crews therefore map the outcrop and inspect the surrounding beds before committing to excavation.

How is a large fossil exposed and documented?

Once a promising specimen is identified, workers remove overlying rock in controlled stages. Awls, rock hammers and chisels are used to expose bone without striking it directly. The appropriate tool depends on the hardness of the matrix and the condition of the fossil; a method that is safe in hard sandstone could damage a thin, weathered bone.

As bone appears, cracks may be stabilized with adhesive. The goal is not merely to reveal the largest visible surface. Paleontologists preserve the specimen’s position in three dimensions because orientation, association with other bones and location within the layer can answer questions about anatomy, transport, burial and behavior.

Records made before removal

  • A unique field number for the specimen and every associated jacket.
  • Locality information and the fossil’s position within the geological section.
  • Orientation, depth and relationships to nearby bones, teeth or plant material.
  • Photographs, sketches, grid coordinates and written field notes.
  • Notes describing the matrix, fractures, weathering and any stabilization applied.

At Carnegie Quarry, workers painted grid lines on exposed sections and documented the exact position of fossils before taking them out. The American Museum of Natural History emphasizes that every specimen and jacket should carry its field number. Without those records, a beautifully prepared bone can lose much of its scientific value because researchers can no longer reconstruct where it came from.

How do they excavate a dinosaur bone without breaking it?

For a large or fragile fossil, the safest approach is usually to remove a block of bone and surrounding matrix rather than trying to clean the bone completely in the field. The matrix supports weak areas and reduces vibration during handling. This block is enclosed in a field jacket made from plaster bandages or plaster and burlap.

Building the field jacket

  1. Trace and trench. Crews expose the upper surface and dig a channel around the specimen, leaving a low pedestal of rock beneath it.
  2. Separate the fossil. A separating layer is placed over the exposed bone so the hardened jacket can later be removed without bonding to the specimen.
  3. Wrap the top and sides. Plaster bandages or plaster-coated burlap are applied across the block, with extra reinforcement at corners and weak points.
  4. Undercut the pedestal. Workers carefully remove supporting rock until the block can be turned. This is a high-risk stage because the specimen is temporarily unsupported.
  5. Turn and support. The block is rolled or lifted onto padding, exposing its underside without allowing the jacket to flex.
  6. Close the underside. The bottom is padded and jacketed, producing a rigid shell that surrounds the matrix on all sides.
  7. Label and inspect. The field number, orientation and locality information are written on the jacket and checked against field records before transport.

Large jackets can weigh well over a ton when they contain an entire dinosaur skeleton or a thick block of sandstone. Poor construction, inadequate padding or careless lifting can break both the jacket and the fossil inside. Moving a jacket is therefore an engineering operation as well as a paleontological one; crews may use frames, slings, vehicles and carefully planned routes suited to the terrain.

Why leave the matrix attached?

Matrix can preserve the orientation of bones, tiny associated fossils and sedimentary structures that explain how the animal was buried. Removing every grain outdoors would take longer, expose fragile surfaces to weather and risk destroying context. A jacket creates a controlled package that can be opened under stable laboratory conditions.

What happens after a dinosaur fossil is dug up?

The jacket is transported to a museum or preparation laboratory, where technicians can work under magnification and with specialized tools. The first task may be to inspect the block, photograph it and decide how to open it. A field identification is provisional: a fragment that resembles one dinosaur in the ground may prove to be another animal, a different bone or several bones fused by mineralization.

Opening and preparing the jacket

Preparators remove the jacket and work through the matrix gradually. Dental tools and carbide-steel needles can lift small grains from delicate surfaces. Small grinding wheels, air scribes and compressed-air sandblasters may be used where the rock and fossil can tolerate them. The tool, pressure and angle are adjusted continuously; preparation is destructive if the matrix is removed too aggressively.

Consolidants or adhesives may be applied to powdery or cracked bone. Preparation records document repairs and the areas left covered. Some specimens are mounted or displayed with matrix still attached, while others are freed completely for study. The choice depends on preservation, research goals and the scientific information contained in the surrounding rock.

When CT scanning helps

Computed tomography can reveal material inside a field jacket before it is opened. A scan may show hidden bones, voids, fractures or the relationship between elements that cannot be seen from the outside. It can guide a safer opening strategy and provide a digital record of the block. CT scanning is not automatic for every specimen; availability, block size, density and the research question determine whether it is useful.

Identification after preparation

Scientists compare prepared bones with anatomical collections and published descriptions. They assess features such as joint surfaces, muscle scars, proportions, tooth shape and the pattern of fusion between bones. New preparation can expose diagnostic details that were invisible in the field, so identifications may be revised. The final scientific result can include a species assignment, a more cautious classification such as a dinosaur family, or an acknowledgment that the material is too incomplete to identify precisely.

How do scientists know how old a dinosaur fossil is?

Most dinosaur fossils are dated through geological context. Researchers determine the age of the sedimentary layer that contains the fossil and compare it with layers above, below and nearby. The fossil’s age is then an estimate constrained by those relationships, not necessarily a single number measured from the bone.

Radiometric dating of associated volcanic ash

Volcanic eruptions can deposit ash within or near sedimentary sequences. As ash alters, it may form bentonite that contains crystals suitable for radiometric dating. Radioactive isotopes in those crystals decay at known rates, allowing laboratories to estimate when the crystals—and therefore the ash layer—formed. If the dated ash is stratigraphically tied to a fossil-bearing bed, it provides an age constraint for the sequence.

Dinosaur National Monument’s Carnegie Quarry illustrates this method. The quarry fossils occur in the Morrison Formation, in sandstone belonging to the Brushy Basin member. Nearby bentonite mudstones contain volcanic ash, and crystals preserved in that ash enabled radiometric dating of the quarry sequence to the Late Jurassic. This is not a claim that ordinary dinosaur bone from the quarry was directly radiometrically dated.

The National Park Service describes the Morrison Formation as approximately 163.5 to 145 million years old. That interval applies to the formation as a geological unit; it does not assign every fossil within it the same age. A particular bone may come from a narrower interval that can be constrained by its exact stratigraphic position and dated layers.

Relative dating and stratigraphic relationships

Even where no datable ash is present, superposition provides a relative framework: in an undisturbed sequence, lower beds are generally older than higher beds. Researchers also compare rock types, fossils and recognizable marker layers across a region. These relationships can establish that one fossil is older or younger than another without producing an absolute numerical age.

Why an age is usually a range

  • The dated ash may lie above or below the fossil-bearing bed rather than directly within it.
  • Radioactive systems have analytical uncertainty, so a result is reported with an error range.
  • Sediment can be reworked, moving older material into younger deposits.
  • A geological formation spans a long interval and may contain fossils from different times.

For these reasons, a responsible description distinguishes the age of the formation, the age of a dated ash layer and the best-supported age range for an individual fossil.

The Carnegie Quarry example: a historical excavation

In 1909, Earl Douglass found eight connected Apatosaurus tail vertebrae at the Utah site after selecting the region partly because the Morrison Formation was exposed there. He recalled, “At last, in the top of the ledge where the softer overlying beds form a divide, a kind of saddle, I saw eight of the tail bones of [an Apatosaurus] in exact position. It was a beautiful sight.”

Carnegie Museum excavations continued from 1909 to 1922. Later Smithsonian and University of Utah work followed, and the National Park Service reports that most visible fossils had been extracted by 1924. The NPS account says the Carnegie team removed more than 300 tons of fossils and found ten mostly complete skeletons and fourteen skulls. Those figures describe this exceptional historical operation, not a typical dinosaur excavation.

Grid lines, position notes and photographs were important because the quarry contained many bones in place. The historical lesson remains current: extraction without documentation can preserve a specimen physically while destroying the evidence needed to interpret it.

What can go wrong, and how professionals reduce the risk

The fossil breaks during exposure

Cracks are mapped and stabilized as soon as they appear. Crews leave more supporting matrix around weak areas and avoid levering directly against bone. If a fragment separates, it is labeled and kept with the correct field number rather than treated as loose debris.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The jacket shifts or collapses

Reinforcement, padding and a planned turning operation reduce flexing. A block that is too large or unstable may be divided into multiple jackets, provided the cuts are documented so the pieces can be reassembled.

Context is lost

Field numbers, grid coordinates, photographs and orientation marks are checked before transport. Every specimen and jacket should carry its field number, and associated pieces must remain linked in the catalog.

The field identification is wrong

That is a normal possibility, not necessarily a failure. Laboratory preparation exposes anatomy that cannot be seen in weathered rock. Scientists preserve the original field observations while updating the identification when preparation and comparison provide better evidence.

The dating result is misunderstood

A date from volcanic ash constrains the surrounding strata. It should not be rewritten as a direct radiometric date of the dinosaur bone, nor should the full age range of a formation be presented as the precise birth or death date of every animal found there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why fossilization preserves only a small sample of dinosaur life

Most animals leave no fossil record. Bones may be scattered, dissolved, crushed, eaten or exposed before burial. Rapid burial in sediment improves the chance that remains survive, but preservation is still selective. A quarry rich in fossils represents a particular set of environmental and geological circumstances, not a complete census of the dinosaurs that once lived there.

This selectivity is why context matters so much. The position of a bone, the sediment around it and the age of nearby layers can reveal whether an animal died where it was buried, was transported by water, or became mixed with remains from different times.

The complete workflow at a glance

  1. Use maps and formation knowledge to choose promising exposed sedimentary rocks.
  2. Inspect the surface and trace fragments into the outcrop.
  3. Expose the specimen with controlled tools while recording location and orientation.
  4. Stabilize cracks and preserve associated bones, sediment and photographs.
  5. Trench around the specimen and build a plaster-and-burlap field jacket around a matrix block.
  6. Undercut, turn, pad and close the underside before moving the labeled jacket.
  7. Open the jacket in a laboratory and remove matrix with methods suited to the fossil.
  8. Use imaging such as CT scanning when it can reveal hidden contents or guide preparation.
  9. Identify the specimen from prepared anatomical features, revising any provisional field identification.
  10. Date the fossil-bearing sequence using radiometric results from suitable ash-associated crystals and stratigraphic relationships.

The result is more than a bone. It is a documented specimen tied to a locality, a rock layer, a preparation history and an age estimate whose limits are stated honestly.
