Paleontologists usually do not determine a fossil’s age by measuring the fossil itself. They work out where it falls in a sequence of geological events, compare its fossils with species whose time ranges are known, and use numerical dates from suitable nearby rocks when available. The result is often an age inferred from the surrounding layers, not a direct measurement of the fossil.

What “dating a fossil” means

A fossil’s age can be described in two different ways. A relative age says that one fossil-bearing layer formed before or after another. A numerical age estimates how long ago an event occurred, usually in years. Paleontologists combine these kinds of evidence to place a fossil in geological time.

These methods answer related but distinct questions. Stratigraphy establishes an order of events. Fossils can help correlate layers and place them within a known interval of biological history. Radiometric dating can provide a numerical age for suitable minerals or rocks. A dated rock layer may help constrain a fossil’s age, but that does not mean the fossil itself was directly dated.

Smithsonian, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and National Park Service (NPS) educational materials describe this combined approach. Which evidence is available depends on the site: not every fossil bed has a usable volcanic ash layer or the minerals needed for radiometric dating.

How the methods differ

Method What it establishes What it needs
Stratigraphy and superposition The relative order of rock beds and geological events A sequence whose original relationships can be interpreted
Biostratigraphy Correlation with an interval indicated by fossil ranges Identifiable fossils with useful known time ranges
Radiometric dating A numerical age for suitable minerals or rocks Appropriate radioactive isotopes and geological material

The methods are strongest when their results agree. Relative order, fossil ranges, and numerical dates can narrow an estimate together, but none is a universal shortcut that works for every fossil.

First, reconstruct the order of the rock layers

Superposition gives a sequence, not a calendar

Sediments accumulate in layers called strata. In an undisturbed sequence that has not been overturned, a bed lower in the stack was deposited before the bed above it. A fossil found in one of those beds can therefore be placed relative to fossils in the layers above and below it.

This is the principle of superposition. It tells geologists which layer is older in the sequence; it does not say how many years passed between two layers. Sediment does not generally accumulate at a known, steady rate, so the thickness of a bed or the distance between beds is not by itself a measure of elapsed time.

Check whether later events changed the sequence

A simple “lower is older” interpretation only works if the original relationships have been understood. Tilting can change the orientation of layers. Faulting can break and displace them; erosion can remove part of a sequence; and an igneous intrusion can cut through older rock. These events may be younger than the beds they affect and can complicate the apparent order.

Geologists therefore interpret the layers in their field context, including evidence of disturbance and the relationships between beds and later features. The aim is to reconstruct the sequence of events before using layer position to infer a fossil’s relative age. If that reconstruction is uncertain, the relative-age interpretation needs to account for the uncertainty rather than treating the exposed stack as an untouched timeline.

How fossil assemblages correlate layers

Species appeared and disappeared over geological time, leaving characteristic fossil assemblages. By comparing the fossils found in different beds, researchers can identify layers that belong to the same broad interval, even when those layers occur at separate sites. This is biostratigraphy: using fossils to establish and correlate the relative timing of rock units.

Why index fossils are useful

An index fossil is especially helpful when the organism lived during a relatively short interval and its remains occur across a broad area. If that fossil is identified in separate locations, it can help correlate the layers containing it. The combination of a limited time range and broad distribution makes an index fossil more informative for correlation than a fossil whose time range or geographic distribution is less useful.

What fossil correlation cannot do by itself

Biostratigraphy provides a relative framework, not a stand-alone stopwatch. Its usefulness depends on correct fossil identification and on how briefly and widely the relevant organisms occurred. A fossil assemblage can point to an interval, but it does not automatically yield a precise numerical age. Radiometric dates and other geological evidence can strengthen or narrow the interpretation.

When several species in a layer have known ranges, their ranges can be compared. The interval shared by those ranges is one constraint on the age of the layer. That overlap is an inference from the ranges, not a separate direct measurement of the fossil or bed.

How radiometric dating adds numerical ages

Some elements contain radioactive isotopes that decay at measurable rates. By measuring parent and daughter isotopes in suitable minerals or rocks, geologists can calculate a numerical age. The date applies to the material and geological event represented by the measured sample; connecting that result to a fossil requires interpreting the sample’s position in the sequence.

Why volcanic ash can help date fossil-bearing sediment

A sedimentary fossil bed may not itself contain the material needed for radiometric dating. NPS explains that sedimentary rocks can be dated indirectly through igneous layers deposited among them, such as volcanic ash. If an ash bed is suitable for dating, its numerical age can anchor the sequence around the fossil-bearing sediment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, a dated ash layer below a fossil-bearing bed and another dated ash layer above it can bracket the bed’s deposition. The lower and upper dates constrain when the fossil-bearing sediment formed. The fossil’s age is then interpreted through its position in that sequence, alongside any other available evidence. The ash dates do not turn into a direct measurement of the fossil: they date the relevant volcanic material or deposition event, and stratigraphy supplies the connection.

Why the right isotope system matters

Radiometric methods rely on suitable material and geological context. Smithsonian educational material identifies uranium, potassium, and carbon among elements used in radiometric methods, but no one isotope system is suitable for every fossil or every span of geological time. In particular, carbon dating should not be presented as a method for dating dinosaur fossils or as a universal way to date geological material.

The practical question is not simply whether a fossil exists, but whether there is appropriate material whose relationship to the fossil-bearing layer can be established. If there is no suitable dated material in or near the relevant sequence, researchers may have to rely more heavily on stratigraphic and fossil evidence.

Worked example: how Lucy’s age was constrained

The Smithsonian Human Origins Program gives the age of the fossil skeleton known as Lucy, Australopithecus afarensis, as around 3.18 million years. When Lucy was first discovered, researchers estimated her age by correlating other animal fossils found in the same layer. This example shows how fossils can first establish a useful relative interval before a later age estimate is expressed numerically.

  • Nyanzachoerus kanamensis: 5.1–2.4 million years ago.
  • Kolpochoerus afarensis: 3.5–2.9 million years ago.
  • Notochoerus euilus: 3.8–1.8 million years ago.

The portion shared by all three ranges is 3.5–2.9 million years ago. The Smithsonian page describes that overlap as consistent with the later estimate of around 3.18 million years for Lucy. The overlap is calculated from the three species’ ranges; it is not a separately measured date. Nor should the figure around 3.18 million years be read as a date produced simply by averaging those ranges.

The example illustrates the logic of biostratigraphy: identify fossils in the same layer, compare their established ranges, and use the shared interval to constrain the layer’s age. A numerical estimate can then be considered alongside that relative evidence. The Smithsonian page was accessed in 2026; it does not display a publication year for these figures.

How to read an age estimate carefully

Ask what was actually dated

A numerical date can refer to mineral formation or volcanic deposition rather than the fossil. If a source reports an age from an ash bed, for example, that age belongs to the ash material or event represented by the sample. The fossil-bearing bed is constrained by its position relative to that dated layer. The strength of the inference depends on correctly interpreting that relationship.

Separate precision from accuracy

Precision and accuracy are not interchangeable. A result can be reported with fine numerical detail without necessarily being close to the true age. A measured number must still be interpreted in context: what material was measured, what event the sample represents, and how it relates to the fossil-bearing stratum. Reporting more digits does not resolve a mistaken geological relationship.

Look for agreement among independent clues

A well-supported estimate draws on evidence that answers different parts of the problem: stratigraphy orders the beds, fossils help correlate them, and radiometric dating can provide numerical anchors where suitable rocks exist. If the clues do not agree, the discrepancy matters; researchers need to examine the interpretations and geological relationships rather than treating one type of date as automatically decisive.

  • Relative order tells you which event came earlier or later, not the duration between events.
  • Fossil ranges constrain an interval only as well as the fossils are identified and their ranges are known.
  • A radiometric result dates the material measured; relating it to a fossil requires geological context.

What a fossil’s age estimate does—and does not—tell you

In many cases, paleontologists infer a fossil’s age from the rock layers and other fossils around it. That is not a weakness or a claim that every fossil has been directly dated. It is a way of combining observable geological relationships with biological and numerical evidence. The most useful account makes clear whether it gives a relative sequence, a numerical date for associated material, or an age estimate constrained by both.

That distinction helps readers interpret statements such as “around 3.18 million years old.” Such a figure is an age estimate supported by evidence and context, not necessarily a direct reading from the fossil itself. To understand how strong the estimate is, look for what was dated, how the fossil-bearing layer was correlated, and whether the sequence’s original relationships were preserved.
