Outclimbed’s points system combines permanent paid points with earned points that fade over time. In Martin Valchev’s account, the initial build took about four days, while getting it fully production-ready took roughly a week. Those are his reported timelines, not independent build-time benchmarks.
How Outclimbed’s points are earned
Valchev describes three ways to add points: buy them, bring visitors through a share link, or refer someone who creates a listing. The key distinction is that paid points persist, while the two activity-based sources expire on different schedules.

Valchev’s stated rationale is to give a listing a stable ranking floor through paid points, while letting attention-based points lose influence over time. That is a design choice, not evidence that the formula produces fairer rankings or keeps users engaged.

The design also gives different weight to different actions: a share-link visitor adds one point, while a referral that leads to a new listing adds five. The post does not provide experimental results showing that these weights are optimal.
How the daily boards differ from the all-time board
Alongside the all-time ranking, Outclimbed has a separate board for each UTC calendar day. Each daily ranking reflects activity for that day and closes at midnight UTC; past daily boards remain browsable. Valchev says the goal was to give a smaller project a chance to win a daily contest even if early or larger listings dominate the all-time ranking.

What free listings can do—and when they are removed
According to the post, a free listing can join with zero points and build points through its share link. It is removed after three months unless it buys points or becomes verified. Verification means placing the Outclimbed badge on the listing owner’s site; the post says that badge adds 30 points.

What the build involved
Valchev reports using Supabase for the database and authentication, Vercel for hosting, Resend for transactional email, self-hosted Umami for privacy-oriented analytics, and Dodo Payments for payment processing.
He also describes an initial payment provider rejecting the product as paid advertising or directory placement, after which he moved to Dodo Payments. He does not name the first provider, and the anecdote does not establish either provider’s current policy. For a similar product, check a payment provider’s current terms early rather than assuming the same classification or outcome.

How this model compares with other pay-to-rank formats
“Pay-to-rank” describes a broad category, not one standard scoring formula. Outbid says its board is all-time and ranks by cumulative amounts ever paid, with no expiration. TopBidr describes ordering by current bid: the highest bid ranks first, ties go to the earlier bid, and each bid is final. Those are distinct models, not additional rules for Outclimbed.

When assessing any such leaderboard, check what activity counts, whether points expire, how ties are settled, whether rankings reset, and whether users can participate without paying. Those details matter more than the label “pay-to-rank.”
What the account establishes—and what it does not
The post is a first-person account of the system Valchev says he built and the reasons he gives for its rules. It is not an independent audit of today’s product, a controlled test of the decay schedules, or a benchmark for how long another team should expect to take. It reports no user counts, revenue, conversion, traffic, or retention results, so none can be inferred from the point formula alone.
