A space mirror redirects sunlight; it does not create light. For an Earth-illumination design, a spacecraft turns a reflective surface toward the Sun and aims the reflected light toward a region on Earth. The spacecraft’s orbit carries that illuminated patch across the surface, while mirror size, distance, orientation, and beam spread determine how bright and broad it can be.
How does a space mirror send sunlight toward Earth?
The basic rule is ordinary reflection: the angle at which light hits a flat mirror equals the angle at which it leaves. The Sun supplies the light, the mirror redirects it, and the spacecraft’s attitude-control system changes the mirror’s orientation to steer the reflected beam.
A ground location does not stay beneath a low-orbit satellite. As the spacecraft moves, the illuminated footprint would move too. A system intended to provide longer coverage would need to account for that motion, for example through multiple spacecraft or a different orbit. The final footprint and its brightness depend on reflector area and shape, pointing accuracy, the spacecraft’s position, sunlight availability, and how widely the reflected light spreads. The atmosphere also scatters light. A mirror cannot concentrate sunlight arbitrarily or make night on Earth behave like daytime.

A NASA Langley Research Center feasibility study published September 1, 1982, examined large solar reflectors in geosynchronous orbit. It estimated that a proposed constellation of 16 spacecraft, each with a 1-kilometer-diameter reflector, could illuminate a region 333 kilometers in diameter at 8 lux. The report also considered servicing one region through the night or providing morning and evening illumination to several regions. These are estimates and proposed capabilities from a historical design study, not measured performance or evidence that the constellation was built. Is a space reflector the same as a telescope mirror?
No. Both involve reflective optics, but they serve different purposes. An Earth-illumination reflector redirects sunlight toward a selected surface. A telescope primary mirror gathers light arriving from astronomical objects and focuses it onto instruments. NASA describes the James Webb Space Telescope’s segmented mirror as a 6.5-meter-aperture telescope optic; that aperture is not a ground-lighting spot or a solar reflector. What other ideas are called space mirrors?
Deformable telescope mirrors
Some space-telescope mirrors are adjusted to correct small optical errors as the telescope heats and cools in orbit. That is precision correction for imaging, not steering sunlight down to Earth. NASA’s FLUTE explainer

Fluid surfaces and particle clouds
NASA’s FLUTE work explores fluidic mirrors for very large space observatories. NASA/JPL’s separate Orbiting Rainbows concept investigates using laser pressure to shape particles into an optical surface. JPL’s article described a controlled laboratory imaging experiment, not a demonstrated in-space mirror. Neither concept should be mistaken for a working Earth-illumination satellite. Mirrors for lunar terrain
NASA/JPL has also described folding mirror structures called TransFormers to redirect solar energy into lunar craters or caves. These are lunar exploration concepts, not a network of mirrors orbiting Earth. NASA/JPL on lunar TransFormers

What is the status of commercial sunlight-reflector plans?
Space.com reports from July and August 2026 described Reflect Orbital’s Eärendil-1 as a planned demonstration, with a targeted flight later in 2026 and a reported FCC license. The July report gave a planned reflector size of 60 by 60 feet (18 by 18 meters). These are dated news reports about a proposed mission, not confirmation that it has flown. Space.com’s July 2026 report
The August report discussed a modeled estimate that a larger proposed operational reflector could appear 40 times as bright as the full Moon at the center of its beam. That is an attributed model-based estimate for a particular beam position—not an observed result from Eärendil-1. The same reporting describes objections and projected sky-brightness effects; those should be understood as contested predictions, not measured environmental impacts. Space.com’s August 2026 report
