An orb-weaver builds its circular web in stages. Dragline silk first creates the anchors, outer frame, radii and hub. The spider then crosses the radii with a widely spaced temporary spiral before laying the final capture spiral. When an insect collides with the finished web, the radial threads deform and absorb much of its kinetic energy while the capture threads adhere to or entangle it. Vibrations then tell the spider where the struggle is and help it decide how to respond.
What an orb web is designed to do
An orb web is not a single uniform sheet of silk. It is a coordinated structure in which different threads carry different mechanical jobs. The outer anchors and perimeter frame suspend the web between surrounding surfaces. Radial threads run inward from that frame and meet at the hub. A spiral thread then links the radii, creating the visible circular pattern and the surface that intercepts flying insects.
This division of labor matters because a thread that supports a web does not need the same properties as one that holds prey. Dragline silk used for anchors, the frame and radii is comparatively stiff. The capture spiral is more extensible, allowing it to stretch when struck. In many orb webs, that spiral is viscid silk coated with adhesive glue droplets. Some cribellate orb webs use dry adhesive capture threads instead, so orb-weaver webs should not be treated as identical in chemistry or architecture.
| Web component | Material or form | Primary job |
|---|---|---|
| Anchor threads | Comparatively stiff dragline silk | Suspends the web from its surroundings |
| Perimeter frame | Dragline silk | Defines and supports the web’s outer boundary |
| Radial threads | Dragline silk | Connects the frame to the hub and helps absorb impact energy |
| Hub | Joined radial threads | Central junction from which the web’s geometry is organized |
| Capture spiral | Extensible viscid silk with glue droplets in many webs, or dry adhesive threads in cribellate webs | Adheres to or entangles insects and helps retain them |
The result is a lightweight structure that can intercept a moving insect without behaving like a rigid net. Its linked threads move, stretch and redistribute force. The 2012 Royal Society study on orb-web mechanics found that radial threads make a major contribution to absorbing prey kinetic energy; capture-thread adhesion and the web’s overall architecture then help keep the insect from escaping.

How the spider constructs the web
Construction is an ordered process rather than random thread placement. A 2021 study of three-dimensional web construction describes the spider building the hub with radial threads and then placing spiral threads, using spiral scaffolding as a guide.
1. Establishing the suspension
The spider begins by getting silk across the gap where the web will hang. These anchor connections provide the basic suspension points. Because anchor silk must carry the weight of the rest of the structure and withstand movement from wind or an impact, it belongs to the relatively stiff dragline-silk system.
2. Laying the perimeter frame
Once the suspension points are connected, the spider reinforces a perimeter. The frame gives the web a defined boundary and provides attachment points for the radii. At this stage the structure is an outline, not yet an effective prey trap: an insect could pass through the open interior.
3. Building the hub and radii
The spider adds radial threads from the frame toward the center. These spokes converge at the hub, producing the web’s basic geometry. The radii are structural members as well as future attachment tracks for the spiral. Their comparatively stiff silk helps transmit and dissipate forces when something strikes the web.

4. Placing the temporary spiral scaffold
With the radii in place, the spider lays a widely spaced temporary spiral across them. This scaffold is a construction guide: it helps the spider maintain spacing and navigate the expanding circular path while the final capture spiral is added. The scaffold is therefore part of the building process, not simply a second version of the finished adhesive trap.
5. Adding the final capture spiral
The spider follows the scaffold and lays the final spiral, attaching it to successive radii. This is where the web gains its prey-catching surface. In a viscid orb web, glue droplets coat the capture silk. In a cribellate orb web, the capture threads use a dry adhesive system instead. The spiral’s greater extensibility lets it yield around a collision rather than behaving like a brittle filament.
6. Completing a mechanically linked structure
When the spiral spans the web, the result is a linked network rather than a set of independent circles and spokes. Force applied at one location can travel through the capture spiral into several radii and then into the frame and anchors. That connectivity is important both for stopping prey and for carrying vibrations back to the spider.
What happens when an insect hits
Interception and impact
A flying insect first encounters the capture region, where the spiral and nearby radii move under the impact. The threads deform, and part of the insect’s kinetic energy is absorbed by that motion. The radial threads are especially important in this stage: the Royal Society’s 2012 analysis concluded that they account for a major share of the web’s energy absorption.

The web does not have to stop every gram of motion instantly. Instead, its architecture spreads the event through connected threads, reducing the chance that one point will fail immediately. The flexible capture spiral can stretch around the insect while the stiffer support network carries loads toward the frame and anchors.
Retention by adhesion and entanglement
After the initial collision, stopping the insect is only half the problem. The capture spiral’s adhesive or entangling properties hold it in place while the spider responds. Glue droplets on viscid silk create contact points that cling to the insect. Dry cribellate capture threads achieve retention without those glue droplets. In both cases, the capture system works together with web geometry: the insect’s movement is constrained by several linked threads instead of one strand.
Why the web can fail at one point without becoming useless
An impact can damage individual threads, but the distributed design can preserve much of the web’s function elsewhere. The 2021 construction-and-mechanics study discusses how silk properties and architecture help localize damage and support rapid repair. A damaged section therefore becomes information for the spider as well as a structural problem.
How the spider knows where prey is
Vibrations travel through the web when an insect struggles, when wind moves a thread, or when another animal contacts the structure. Orb-weavers can use this vibration information to locate and identify potential prey, mates, predators and defects in the web. The web is consequently both a trap and a sensory extension of the spider’s body.

The spider does not need to see the entire web to find a trapped insect. Vibrations arriving through different radii provide directional clues. Their timing and pattern can indicate where the disturbance began and whether it resembles a useful prey item, a threat or ordinary environmental movement. This is why the hub and radial network are central to behavior, not just to construction.
From detection to response
- A disturbance begins: the insect’s impact and subsequent movement deform capture threads.
- Vibrations propagate: linked spiral and radial threads carry the signal toward the hub and other attachment points.
- The spider localizes the event: vibration patterns help it determine the direction and approximate position of the disturbance.
- The spider evaluates the source: the signal can indicate prey, a predator, a mate or a damaged section rather than automatically triggering the same behavior.
- The spider reaches and subdues the insect: it follows the web’s structure to the trapped animal and uses the capture system and its own handling behavior to keep the prey from escaping.
That final step is time-sensitive. A struggling insect can tear threads or work free, so the web’s ability to retain it and the spider’s ability to identify the disturbance are complementary parts of capture. The available studies establish the role of vibration sensing and prey subduction, but they do not imply that every species uses an identical attack sequence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How web size and mesh spacing affect capture
Web design involves trade-offs. A larger web presents more interception area, but it also requires more silk and takes longer to build or repair. Wider or narrower spacing changes which insects are likely to contact the capture spiral, yet spacing cannot be judged independently of web size, prey behavior and the mechanical properties of the silk.

In a 2007 experiment, capture probability increased with web size, while mesh width did not affect capture probability under that experiment’s conditions. The same study reported that spiders on narrow-meshed webs were almost three times more likely to capture energetically profitable large insects. That “almost three times” result is specific to the tested spiders, web designs and prey category; it is not a universal multiplier for every orb-weaver species or insect.

| Design variable | Finding supported by the cited experiment | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Web size | Capture probability increased with web size | A larger interception area can improve the chance of contact in the tested conditions |
| Mesh width | No effect on capture probability in that experiment | Spacing alone did not determine overall capture probability there |
| Narrow mesh and profitable large insects | Almost three times as likely to capture those insects | A study-specific advantage for the tested prey and web conditions |
These results show why “tighter mesh is always better” is too simple. A spider is balancing interception area, silk investment, prey size and the forces generated at impact. A web that works well for one prey community may not be optimal where insects are smaller, faster or less likely to fly through the web’s plane.
Silk differences that change how a web works
Support silk and capture silk should be compared by function rather than appearance. Dragline silk in anchors, frames and radii is comparatively stiff and suited to carrying loads and transmitting forces. Capture silk is more extensible and is specialized for contact with prey.
Within capture systems, viscid and cribellate designs solve adhesion differently. Viscid silk carries glue droplets that make the spiral sticky. Cribellate orb webs use dry adhesive capture threads. The distinction affects how an insect is retained, but both systems still depend on the same broad architecture: a supporting perimeter, radii converging at a hub and a spiral that links them.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What silk decorations, or stabilimenta, do
Some orb webs include conspicuous silk decorations called stabilimenta. Their appearance has led to several proposed explanations: they might strengthen the web, hide the spider, reduce damage, affect foraging or provide shade.
The function remains disputed and may vary among species. A 2000 review found that foraging had the strongest support among the hypotheses it examined, while several alternatives had been tested less extensively. It is therefore more accurate to describe stabilimenta as a variable web feature with unresolved functions than to claim that every decoration has one confirmed purpose.
Repair, sensing and the web’s life after capture
An orb web is exposed to weather, accidental contacts and prey impacts. Because vibrations can also reveal web defects, the spider can detect problems through the same network that reports prey. The 2021 study links silk properties and web architecture with localizing damage and enabling rapid repair.
Repair is not simply cosmetic. Replacing a damaged capture section restores adhesion and entanglement, while restoring a radial or frame thread helps recover the paths that carry force and vibration. The spider’s construction skills therefore continue after the original web is finished: maintenance preserves both the trap and the sensory system.

The complete capture strategy in one sequence
- Suspend: anchor threads hold the planned web location.
- Frame: a perimeter creates the structural boundary.
- Connect: radii run from the frame to a central hub.
- Guide: a widely spaced temporary spiral organizes placement.
- Trap: the final extensible capture spiral, either viscid or dry cribellate, fills the web.
- Absorb: impact deforms linked threads, with radial silk making a major contribution to energy absorption.
- Retain: adhesive or entangling capture threads hold the insect.
- Locate: vibrations reveal the disturbance’s position and possible identity.
- Subdue and maintain: the spider handles the prey and repairs damage when necessary.
Orb-web success comes from integration. No single thread explains the trap: stiff support silk carries loads, extensible capture silk contacts prey, architecture distributes forces, and vibrations turn the entire structure into a sensing network.
