The Oral-B iO’s distinguishing feature is a round brush head that uses oscillating-rotating movement alongside gentle micro-vibrations, with pressure guidance to help you adjust how firmly you brush. App coaching, displays, and more detailed tracking depend on the specific iO series; they are not features of every handle.
What makes the iO cleaning system different?
Oral-B describes iO as a platform combining three elements: a round head designed to surround each tooth, oscillating-rotating movement, and gentle micro-vibrations. The head shape and motion are a design approach, not a guarantee that every tooth or surface will be cleaned adequately without careful brushing.
That motion differs from the side-to-side sonic movement described in Oral-B’s comparison material. It is not simply a case of one powered brush vibrating and the other not: the cleaning motions are different. Oral-B characterizes its system this way: “The Oral-B iO combines oscillating-rotating technology with gentle microvibrations to help deliver a thorough brushing experience.” Oral-B’s technology explainer presents that as the company’s product description.

The pressure sensor is meant to help you avoid brushing too hard and, on models with more visible feedback, show when your pressure is appropriate. The interface varies: Oral-B’s guide distinguishes the simpler sensor on iO2 from the visible sensor on iO3 and above. On the Series 7 listing, the light indicates red for too much pressure, white for too little, and green for an appropriate amount. Check the guide for the exact handle you own, since the sensor experience is not identical across the range.

Which iO features depend on the series?
The iO name identifies a platform, not one uniform feature set. Oral-B’s U.S. guide places app coaching from iO5 and interactive displays from iO6. Higher-series models add features such as Position Detection and Smart Adapt Mode. Check the current listing for the precise model and region before assuming that a particular tracking or coaching feature is included.
Series 5: app tracking without the same display tier
Oral-B’s Series 5 listing describes app tracking, pressure feedback, five brushing modes, a two-minute timer, and a brush-head tracker. It is an example of how features are distributed across the range, not a template for every iO handle. See the Series 5 product listing for its configuration.

What do Oral-B’s cleaning-outcome figures show?
Oral-B product and series materials advertise “100% more plaque” versus a regular manual toothbrush, and a separate guide states “6x more plaque along the gumline” versus a regular manual toothbrush. These are manufacturer-presented comparisons; the consumer pages do not establish the underlying studies’ publication years or provide enough detail here to independently assess their methods.

Oral-B’s health explainer reports that iO Series 5–10 had a 32.6% greater reduction in gingivitis and 5.8 times higher odds of reaching generally healthy gum status than Sonicare DiamondClean SMART in a six-month comparison. It also reports that 81.8% of iO users, compared with 23.6% of manual-brush users, reached healthy gum status by week eight in a study of adults with gingivitis. These are claims as presented by Oral-B’s health explainer; the underlying publication year and full study record are not established in the consumer content. They should not be read as independently verified outcomes for every user.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you check when choosing an iO handle?
- Cleaning motion: The round head’s oscillating-rotating action and micro-vibrations are the platform’s defining design features.
- Pressure feedback: Check whether the specific model has a simple sensor or a visible indicator and what its signals mean.
- Coaching and tracking: App support, brushing recognition, and tracking vary by series.
- Display and modes: An interactive display and mode count are model-specific, not guaranteed by the iO name.
- Included accessories: Charger and travel-case configurations can differ by model and listing.
- Replacement heads: Confirm that a head is designed for your iO handle. Oral-B lists iO replacement heads, including Gentle Care; check compatibility before buying.
- Evidence behind performance claims: Keep the stated comparator and study duration attached to any figure, and distinguish manufacturer claims from independently established evidence.
How does iO compare with sonic toothbrushes?
The central distinction in Oral-B’s comparison is the cleaning motion: iO uses a round head with oscillating-rotating movement and micro-vibrations, while the sonic brushes described there use side-to-side motion. Other practical differences depend on the exact models being compared, especially their pressure feedback, app features, displays, modes, and included accessories. A performance figure is meaningful only alongside its comparator and the evidence supporting it; the figures on Oral-B’s consumer pages are company-presented claims.
