Optical force sensors do not “see” force directly. They convert force into a measurable change—usually a tiny displacement, vibration, wavelength shift or motion—and use light to read that change without touching the object. In one National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) design, laser photons push a reflective cantilever and an interferometer measures its movement. In optical tweezers, the focused light field traps an object and its response reveals the force. The same principle links all optical methods: a calibrated optical signal is connected to a mechanical response through a model and an uncertainty budget.

What an optical force sensor actually measures

Force is an interaction, not a visible substance. A sensor therefore needs a transducer: something that changes predictably when force is applied. Common transducers include a spring or cantilever that bends, a trapped particle that shifts from the center of a light trap, or a fiber Bragg grating whose reflected wavelength changes as the fiber is strained.

Light supplies the readout because its wavelength, phase, intensity and direction can be measured with great precision. The optical instrument may be physically separate from the object being tested, which avoids loading a very small system with a conventional probe. That advantage is useful in nanomechanics, precision metrology and biological experiments, but it does not remove the need to calibrate stiffness, optical power, temperature, vibration and the readout electronics.

How can light apply or reveal a force?

Photons carry momentum

A photon has momentum. When a beam is absorbed or reflected, its momentum changes and an equal and opposite momentum is transferred to the surface. The resulting radiation-pressure force is tiny: a one-watt laser beam produces a force in the nanonewton range in the explanatory example given by NIST. For an ideal beam reflected straight back, the force is approximately twice the incident optical power divided by the speed of light; real systems must account for absorption, angle, beam profile and reflectivity.

Because optical power can be measured and stabilized, photon pressure can serve as a known force input. The light is then both the actuator and part of the calibration chain. This is different from using light only as a ruler to observe a force generated by a spring, fluid, electric field or biological interaction.

Light can also be a displacement ruler

An interferometer compares the phase of light traveling along different paths. A displacement as small as a fraction of a wavelength changes the interference pattern. By tracking that phase or intensity change, the instrument obtains a position or vibration signal. Force is inferred only after that displacement is related to a calibrated mechanical stiffness, resonance model or other response function.

The distinction matters: a highly sensitive displacement measurement is not automatically a highly accurate force measurement. A wrong stiffness value, drifting laser power, thermal expansion or vibration can dominate the final result even when the optical readout resolves sub-nanometer motion.

The NIST cantilever-and-interferometer example

NIST’s “Measuring Tiny Forces with Light” account describes a prototype in which a reflective surface is attached to a tiny cantilever. A cantilever is a beam fixed at one end, like a miniature diving board. The free end bends when a force is applied.

  1. Prepare a reflective mechanical element. The cantilever carries a highly reflective, gold-coated surface. Its geometry and stiffness determine how much it deflects for a given force.
  2. Deliver calibrated light. Light from an optical fiber strikes the reflective surface. The reflected photons transfer momentum and exert radiation pressure.
  3. Let the cantilever respond. A larger applied force produces a larger static deflection or a larger driven vibration, subject to the cantilever’s frequency response and damping.
  4. Read the motion interferometrically. The built-in interferometer detects a change in optical path as the reflecting surface moves. In NIST’s dual-cavity arrangement, one optical cavity provides a photon-pressure reference while the other measures mirror separation proportional to the applied force.
  5. Convert displacement to force. A calibration model combines the optical displacement, mechanical stiffness or dynamics, beam power and environmental corrections. The output is a force with an uncertainty, not just a displacement number.

NIST reported that the experimental systems described in its 2016 account covered forces from the micronewton range down to 15 femtonewtons. That range belongs to the specific research setups and conditions reported, not to optical sensors as a universal specification. The same account discusses a proposed single-photon scheme aimed at zeptonewton-scale force measurement; NIST explicitly said that goal had not yet been achieved.

The complete mechanism is therefore a chain: calibrated optical power creates photon pressure; photon pressure moves a mechanical element; an interferometer measures the motion; and a calibration model maps motion to force. Alignment, mirror reflectivity, cantilever stiffness, laser noise, vibration and temperature all enter the result.

How optical tweezers measure forces differently

Optical tweezers use a tightly focused light field to trap and move a microscopic object in three dimensions. The trap is formed by the balance of gradient forces, which pull the object toward the focus, and scattering forces, which push it along the beam. When an external interaction displaces the trapped object, the displacement or motion can be interpreted with a calibrated trap-stiffness model.

What the measurement sequence looks like

  1. Trap an object. A focused beam holds a bead, cell component or other suitable microscopic object near the focal point.
  2. Calibrate the trap. The experimenter determines how displacement relates to restoring force, accounting for fluid viscosity, temperature and the trap’s optical power.
  3. Apply or observe an interaction. A molecular motor, tether, fluid flow or neighboring object perturbs the trapped object.
  4. Measure the response. A camera, position-sensitive detector or back-focal-plane method tracks displacement or fluctuations.
  5. Infer force. The calibrated response converts the measured displacement or trajectory into force, often as a function of time.

Here light is the actuator that creates the trap, while the object’s response carries information about another force. In the cantilever arrangement, by contrast, photon pressure itself is the reference force and the interferometer reads a mechanical displacement.

NIST describes optical tweezers as tools for studying interactions in biological systems and reports 0.1-nanometer manipulation precision for micrometer-scale objects in the work discussed on its page. That figure is specific to the described NIST setup; it is not a universal precision rating for every optical-tweezers instrument. NIST also describes combining holographic optical tweezers with scanning-probe methods to make nanoscale measurement and manipulation tools. This is a research direction, not evidence that a consumer system offers those capabilities. See NIST’s Optically Operated Nanoscale Mechanical Tools.

Fiber Bragg gratings: force inferred from wavelength

A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is a periodic structure written into an optical fiber. It reflects a narrow band of wavelengths. Stretching or compressing the grating changes its period and therefore shifts the reflected peak. If the grating is bonded to a structure or incorporated into a mechanical package, the wavelength shift can be calibrated to strain and then to force.

The optical spectrum analyzer or interrogator is part of the sensor, not an afterthought. NIST’s 2005 metrology study found that a wavelength uncertainty as small as 1 picometer corresponded to nearly 1 microstrain for the FBG strain sensors examined. In the studied setup, making the optical-spectrum-analyzer result more precise than 10 picometers was difficult, and uncertainty could reach 1 nanometer without calibration to a known wavelength reference. Those values describe that 2005 study and its equipment; they are not current universal specifications for all FBG systems.

Temperature is another critical correction. NIST reported that athermally packaged gratings in the studied case could drift and show large wavelength jumps, making stability better than 4 picometers per year difficult to achieve. A force calculation that ignores reference-wavelength stability can therefore look numerically precise while being physically wrong. Read the original study at Fundamental limits in fiber Bragg grating peak wavelength measurements.

Comparing the main optical approaches

Approach What light does What is measured Typical sample or target Key uncertainty sources
Photon-pressure cantilever Applies a calibrated force by reflection Cantilever displacement or vibration with an interferometer Reflective micro- or nanoscale mechanical element Optical-power calibration, stiffness, alignment, vibration, thermal drift and cavity noise
Optical tweezers Creates a three-dimensional optical trap and manipulates the object Trap displacement, trajectory or fluctuations Micrometer-scale bead, cell component or other optically trappable object Trap stiffness, viscosity, temperature, laser fluctuations, sample heating and nearby surfaces
Fiber Bragg grating Reads a wavelength-selective reflection Reflected-peak wavelength shift caused by strain Fiber attached to a structure or force transducer Interrogator wavelength uncertainty, reference stability, temperature and packaging strain

No single method wins on every application. Choose according to whether light must apply the force or merely read a response, the required force range and bandwidth, how localized the measurement must be, environmental conditions, calibration traceability and whether the sample tolerates focused light or contact with a fiber.

What determines accuracy at femtonewton and nanonewton scales?

Mechanical calibration

The force-to-motion relationship must be known. For a static cantilever this may be a spring constant; near resonance it is a frequency-dependent transfer function. Optical-tweezer experiments require trap stiffness and hydrodynamic corrections. In an FBG package, the strain-to-force conversion depends on bonding, geometry and load path. Calibrate the complete assembled sensor rather than relying only on a nominal component value.

Optical calibration

Photon-pressure references depend on measured optical power, reflection and beam geometry. Interferometers depend on wavelength, path length and phase tracking. FBG measurements depend on the interrogator and its wavelength reference. NIST’s force-reference work compares photon pressure derived from calibrated laser power with an electrostatic force balance, illustrating how an optical force can be connected to another traceable reference. The comparison covered the 10-nanonewton range; it does not mean every optical sensor is self-calibrating. See NIST’s 2021 comparison of electrostatic and photon-pressure force references.

Environmental control

  • Vibration: Floor motion, acoustic noise and pump vibration can be larger than the displacement being measured. Isolation, rigid optical mounts and quiet operation reduce the background.
  • Temperature: Thermal expansion changes cavity length, cantilever stiffness, fiber strain and refractive index. Measure temperature and apply a validated correction or stabilize the environment.
  • Laser noise: Intensity and frequency fluctuations can appear as force or displacement noise. Power stabilization and differential optical designs help separate signal from source noise.
  • Alignment: Beam angle, spot position and polarization affect radiation pressure and interferometer contrast. Recheck alignment after thermal or mechanical changes.
  • Drift and aging: Coatings, adhesives, fiber packages and references can change over time. A repeatable check with a known displacement or force reveals drift before a long measurement.

A practical workflow for building a tiny-force measurement

  1. Define the measurand. State whether the output is force, force gradient, displacement, strain or a time-dependent spectrum. Specify the expected range, bandwidth and allowable uncertainty.
  2. Select the transducer. Use a cantilever for a calibrated mechanical reference, optical tweezers for a localized noncontact interaction with a suitable microscopic object, or an FBG when force can be transferred into fiber strain.
  3. Model the load path. Identify every interface between the unknown force and the optical signal. Include stiffness, resonance, damping, friction, buoyancy or hydrodynamic drag where applicable.
  4. Design the optical readout. Choose interferometric phase, camera position, photodetector signal or wavelength interrogation. Check that the signal remains linear over the intended range.
  5. Calibrate traceably. Use calibrated optical power, displacement standards, wavelength references or an independent force balance. Record the calibration date, range and environmental conditions.
  6. Measure the background. Collect a zero-force record, vibration spectrum, temperature trace and laser-noise baseline. The baseline sets the practical detection limit.
  7. Apply the force and verify linearity. Step or sweep the input through several levels. Confirm that the optical response follows the model and that increasing and decreasing runs agree.
  8. Build an uncertainty budget. Combine repeatability, calibration uncertainty, readout noise, drift, environmental corrections and model error. Report the result with its coverage or confidence statement, not as an unexplained number of digits.
  9. Repeat the check after the experiment. A post-measurement calibration catches drift and distinguishes a real force change from instrument movement.

Common mistakes and how to diagnose them

“The interferometer resolves tiny motion, so force must be accurate.”

Resolution and accuracy are different. If the cantilever stiffness or trap calibration is wrong, a beautifully resolved displacement still produces a wrong force. Recalibrate the mechanical response and compare with an independent reference.

“A stronger laser always improves sensitivity.”

More optical power can increase photon-pressure signal or trap stiffness, but it can also heat the sample, saturate a detector, increase radiation-pressure back-action or damage a biological specimen. Increase power only within a validated thermal and linear operating range.

“A wavelength shift is automatically strain.”

Temperature, packaging stress and wavelength-reference drift can mimic strain. Use an appropriate temperature compensation method, characterize the package and verify the interrogator against a known reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The smallest reported number is the instrument’s specification.”

NIST’s 15-femtonewton lower-end result came from particular experimental systems. The 0.1-nanometer tweezers figure came from a described NIST manipulation setup. Neither should be copied into a product specification without matching the optical layout, sample, bandwidth and uncertainty conditions.

“A single measurement is enough.”

At tiny scales, drift and random noise can resemble force. Record repeated zero-force intervals, inspect the spectrum for vibration lines, vary the integration time and test whether the inferred force scales as the model predicts.

Putting the headline numbers in context

Figure What it describes Qualification
15 femtonewtons Lower end of forces measured in the systems described by NIST Reported in the 2016 account, updated 2025; setup-specific, not a universal optical-sensor rating
0.1 nanometer Manipulation precision for micrometer-scale objects in NIST’s optical-tweezers work NIST page created 2010 and updated 2024; applies to the described work
1 picometer Wavelength uncertainty corresponding to nearly 1 microstrain for the FBG sensors studied NIST metrology study published 2005; equipment- and configuration-specific
10 picometers Precision that was difficult to improve upon with the optical spectrum analyzer in that FBG study Result from the 2005 setup, not a current universal limit
10 nanonewtons Force range in NIST’s comparison of photon-pressure and electrostatic references 2021 comparison of reference methods, not a general sensor specification

The figures become useful only when paired with the conditions that produced them: optical power, bandwidth, averaging time, sample environment, calibration method and uncertainty. A sensor advertised with a very small resolution may still have a much larger absolute uncertainty once drift and calibration are included.

When to choose each method

Choose a photon-pressure cantilever when

  • You need a direct optical force reference tied to calibrated laser power.
  • The experiment can accommodate a reflective micro-mechanical element and a stable interferometer.
  • You can control vibration, alignment and thermal drift.

Choose optical tweezers when

  • The target is microscopic and can be trapped without unacceptable heating or photodamage.
  • You need three-dimensional, localized manipulation or measurements of biological interactions.
  • A calibrated trap-stiffness model is practical for the sample medium and geometry.

Choose an FBG-based transducer when

  • Force can be converted reliably into strain in a fiber package or structure.
  • You need a fiber-distributed or electrically passive sensing element.
  • You can provide a stable wavelength reference and compensate temperature and packaging effects.

The bottom line

Optical sensors detect tiny forces by creating a calibrated link between force and an optical observable. Photons may supply the force, as in a laser-driven cantilever; they may confine and probe an object, as in optical tweezers; or they may read a wavelength shift caused by strain, as in an FBG. The decisive engineering work is the calibration chain: mechanical response, optical readout, environmental control and uncertainty must be treated as one measurement system. That is why a carefully calibrated interferometer can make femtonewton-scale measurements, while an uncalibrated sensor with the same optical resolution may deliver an unreliable force value.
