Short answer: OpenAI monetizes ChatGPT through paid individual subscriptions, per-seat organization plans, additional usage charges on some business contracts, metered API consumption, and advertising sold inside ChatGPT. These mechanisms can overlap: an organization may pay for seats and extra usage, while API billing remains separate from any ChatGPT subscription.
The revenue model at a glance
OpenAI does not rely on one universal ChatGPT price. It sells access through several payment units aimed at different customers. Individuals generally pay a recurring subscription; organizations buy user seats and, depending on their agreement, may also buy flexible usage; developers and companies using the API pay for the computational work their applications consume; advertisers pay to reach ChatGPT users through the company’s ad products.

The official ChatGPT pricing page, billing documentation and API pricing documentation describe these mechanisms. They do not publish an audited table showing what percentage of OpenAI’s total revenue comes from each one.

Individuals pay for recurring access
ChatGPT has a free tier as well as paid plans. A paid plan is a software subscription: the customer pays for a billing period in exchange for higher or broader access to ChatGPT capabilities than the free offering provides. The exact features, limits and prices are changeable, so the live pricing page is the authoritative place to check a plan before subscribing.

OpenAI’s plan page describes monthly and, for some offerings, annual billing. That creates predictable recurring revenue while allowing OpenAI to package model access, features and service limits into different tiers. A subscriber’s payment is therefore not a fee for each individual question; it is payment for the selected plan and its stated allowances.
Why subscriptions matter financially
Subscriptions convert a large population of individual users into recurring software revenue. The model also lets OpenAI separate casual users, who may remain on the free tier, from customers willing to pay for expanded access. Because plan prices and limits can change, neither a current price nor a particular feature should be treated as permanent without checking the live page.
Consumer ChatGPT billing is distinct from API billing. Buying a ChatGPT subscription does not, by itself, create an API spending balance or make API calls free. API customers configure billing separately on the API platform, as explained in OpenAI’s billing guidance.

Business charges by user seat
ChatGPT Business is sold per seat rather than as one undifferentiated company license. In the Business FAQ as displayed on October 11, 2026, US Standard seats were listed at $25 per user per month, or $20 per user per month when billed annually. Premium seats were listed at $125 per user per month, or $100 per user per month on annual billing.
Those figures are the displayed US prices on that date, not a universal worldwide rate. A Business workspace requires at least two paid seats, and the amount shown to a customer can differ by country, currency, taxes and later price changes. Check the ChatGPT Business FAQ for the current rules before budgeting.

Flexible charges can sit on top of seats
Some advanced features in Business, Enterprise and Edu are handled through flexible usage rather than being unlimited components of the base seat price. OpenAI describes credit-based pricing for some workspaces and token-based USD billing for certain Enterprise contracts. The applicable method depends on the plan, feature and contract.
This distinction is important because it prevents a misleading conclusion that every organization pays one fixed amount per employee. One company may pay only recurring seats; another may pay seats plus credits for selected advanced capabilities; an Enterprise customer may have a negotiated token-based arrangement. OpenAI’s flexible-pricing documentation explains that these structures are not identical across plans.

- Predictable base revenue: each paid seat represents a recurring subscription commitment.
- Expansion potential: an account can add seats as more employees use the workspace.
- Usage upside: eligible advanced features can generate additional charges under the customer’s credit or token arrangement.
- Contract variation: Enterprise and institutional terms can differ, so a Business price should not be presented as an Enterprise price.
How OpenAI makes money from its API
API billing is a separate product relationship
The API is designed for developers and companies that put OpenAI models into their own applications, services and internal workflows. API customers set up payment on the API platform, separately from ChatGPT web subscriptions. The billing system records the models and features used by an application and charges according to the applicable rates.
OpenAI’s API pricing documentation lists prices per million tokens for individual models. Since models and rates change, a current figure should always be taken from that page rather than copied into a permanent cost estimate.
Tokens are the main meter
For most API requests, the bill is driven by input tokens sent to a model and output tokens generated by it. A token is a unit of text processing, not necessarily a whole word. Longer prompts, larger conversation histories, more retrieved documents and longer generated answers generally create more metered usage. The model selected also matters because each model has its own input and output rates.

Some API features can add separate tool or storage charges. Consequently, an application’s total bill is not always just a simple multiplication of text length by one token price. Developers need to account for model choice, input volume, output volume and any applicable tool or storage line items.
API surfaces are not separately priced products
OpenAI states that API surfaces including Responses, Chat Completions, Realtime, Batch and Assistants are not themselves charged as separate product fees. The model’s input and output token rates, together with any applicable tool charges, determine the bill. Calling a different API surface does not automatically create a second platform subscription.
Why API revenue scales differently from subscriptions
A subscription customer can pay the same recurring amount during a billing period even if usage varies within the plan’s limits. API revenue is more directly connected to workload: a lightly used prototype may generate little spending, while a production application processing millions of requests can generate substantial recurring usage. That makes API revenue usage-sensitive and links OpenAI’s receipts to customers’ traffic, prompts, generated output and selected models.
Because API and ChatGPT billing are separate, a company can be both a ChatGPT Business customer and an API customer. Paying for seats does not settle the company’s API invoice, and API usage does not automatically grant users a ChatGPT subscription.
Advertising inside ChatGPT
OpenAI has an ad-buying product
Advertising is an additional monetization path rather than a replacement for subscriptions or API billing. In its May 5, 2026 announcement, OpenAI described new ways to buy ChatGPT ads, including cost-per-click bidding and expanded campaign measurement tools. The announcement establishes that advertisers can purchase campaigns through a defined ad product.

In practical terms, advertising lets OpenAI monetize attention from users who may not pay for a subscription. Advertiser spending is governed by campaign settings and delivery rather than by the number of API tokens consumed by a developer. The two businesses therefore have different buyers, billing units and economic drivers.
The reported $1 billion figure needs careful qualification
Axios reported on August 31, 2026 that OpenAI said its advertising business had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in less than a year. This is a company-reported run-rate figure conveyed by Axios, not audited annual revenue and not an independently verified segment total. An annualized run rate extrapolates a recent pace; it is not the same as the amount recognized during a completed financial year.
That distinction matters when comparing advertising with subscriptions or API sales. The $1 billion figure cannot be used as though it were a full-year advertising segment in audited financial statements, and it cannot establish what share of OpenAI’s total revenue advertising represents.

OpenAI’s payment mechanisms are complementary rather than mutually exclusive. Consider these common arrangements:
- Individual user: a person may use the free tier or pay for a consumer ChatGPT subscription. That payment covers the selected ChatGPT plan, not independent API consumption.
- Growing company: an employer may purchase Business seats for employees and incur flexible charges for eligible advanced features.
- Software company: a developer may maintain a ChatGPT workspace for staff while separately paying API invoices for a customer-facing application.
- Advertiser: a brand can buy ChatGPT campaigns without becoming an API customer or purchasing employee seats.
- Large institution: an Enterprise or Edu agreement may combine recurring access with a contract-specific credit or token arrangement.
The payment unit is the clearest way to distinguish the streams: subscription period for consumers, seat for organizations, credits or contract-defined tokens for some advanced workspace usage, tokens and tools for API workloads, and campaign spending for advertisers.

What public information does—and does not—show
What is documented
- ChatGPT has free and paid consumer plans, with subscription billing described on the official pricing page.
- Business is sold per seat, with displayed US Standard and Premium prices and a two-seat minimum as stated in the Business FAQ on October 11, 2026.
- Business, Enterprise and Edu can use flexible credit or token-based charging for certain features, depending on the plan or contract.
- API customers are billed separately, generally according to model input and output tokens plus applicable tools or storage.
- OpenAI has launched ad-buying features for ChatGPT, including CPC bidding and campaign measurement tools.
- A $1 billion annualized advertising run rate was reported by Axios as an OpenAI statement in August 2026.
What is not established
The public documents cited here are pricing, billing and product announcements, not an audited company-wide revenue disclosure. They do not establish whether subscriptions, organization plans, API usage or advertising is OpenAI’s largest revenue stream. They also do not provide a verified percentage split among those categories.
It is therefore inaccurate to assign a revenue share without a source that directly reports one. The advertising run rate should not be added to a subscription or API figure as though all three were comparable full-year segment totals. Likewise, the presence of a flexible-usage option does not mean every Business or Enterprise customer pays variable charges.
How to read OpenAI’s business model as a customer
Start with the customer type
Individuals should begin with the consumer ChatGPT pricing page. Teams should compare seat requirements, billing cadence and whether the desired feature is included or subject to flexible usage. Developers should open the API pricing page and estimate input tokens, output tokens, model selection and tool use. Advertisers need campaign-specific information rather than a ChatGPT subscription price.

Separate fixed commitments from variable consumption
A recurring subscription or seat creates a relatively predictable base commitment. Flexible credits, Enterprise token arrangements and API usage introduce a variable component that depends on activity. Keeping those categories separate makes invoices easier to forecast and prevents a seat price from being mistaken for an all-inclusive usage budget.
Check the live documentation before committing
Prices, model availability, plan limits and ad products can change. Before purchasing, verify the current terms at the ChatGPT pricing page, review billing settings guidance, inspect the API pricing table, and read the relevant Business FAQ or flexible-pricing documentation.
Bottom line
OpenAI’s ChatGPT and API monetization is a layered software model: recurring consumer subscriptions, organization seat licenses, contract- or credit-based additional usage, metered API consumption, and advertising. The sources establish how customers are charged, but they do not publish an audited breakdown showing how much total company revenue comes from each stream.
