Open Worlds Atlas makes open-world game franchises orbit a shared center instead of presenting them as a static list. Its creator, Rumple Cryptoskin, describes a browser-based Three.js galaxy with 19 franchises shown as planets and a 20th destination as a moon around Assassin’s Creed. The project uses Kepler-inspired period scaling to calculate motion from elapsed time, while a shared data-driven page template presents each franchise’s timeline. These are implementation details reported by the creator, not an independently audited catalog or code review.
What is Open Worlds Atlas?
Open Worlds Atlas is a browser-based Three.js visualization that turns game franchises into destinations in a navigable galaxy. Visitors move through the scene in a first-person view and can open franchise pages containing scrollable timelines of remasters, spin-offs, and sequels. The creator’s October 5, 2026 walkthrough describes 19 franchises represented as planets, with an additional moon around Assassin’s Creed for a total of 20 destinations. The organizing idea is captured in the creator’s question: “If these franchises are planets, why would they just sit there?” Orbiting bodies give the overview visible motion, while dedicated pages provide a place for the history behind each franchise.

Rather than advancing a planet’s position a little on every animation frame and storing the new position, the project calculates position from elapsed time since a fixed epoch. In principle, that means the same time input yields the same position without depending on how many frames have already run. It also avoids accumulating small frame-to-frame updates as the only record of where an object should be.

The creator describes the orbit periods using Kepler’s third-law relationship: period T scales with orbital radius r to the power of 1.5, so T² scales with r³. In simplified form, T ∝ r1.5 and T² ∝ r³. The three lane radii are 8, 13, and 19 world units. With the outer lane assigned a 369-day period, the creator reports approximate periods of 101, 209, and 369 days for the three lanes.
These are the project’s modeled values, not measurements of real astronomical bodies. The walkthrough does not provide an independent code audit or a named statistical study; the figures should be read as creator-reported implementation details.

Why are the visible planets moving faster than real time?
A literal 369-day visual orbit would be difficult to notice during a short visit. Open Worlds Atlas therefore applies a 100× presentation-time multiplier to visible planet positions. In the creator’s example, an outer-lane lap takes about 3.7 days of wall-clock time at that multiplier. The choice of speed was made through trial and error, not a reported perceptual study.
The acceleration is limited to the galaxy’s visible positions. The age counters on franchise pages use real elapsed time, according to the creator. Keeping those clocks distinct lets the overview show motion without making a franchise’s page counter appear to age at the accelerated rate.

How does the atlas turn franchise data into planet traits?
The visualization uses separate inputs for planet size and for the franchise’s score. Planet size is derived from game-map area in square kilometers with a logarithmic scale. A separate score from 1 to 10 helps determine both the orbital lane and the planet’s axial rotation.
The creator says the score blends three factors: critic rating, lifetime-sales bucket, and number of mainline entries, weighted at 40%, 40%, and 20%, respectively. Some scores are manually overridden. Consequently, the scheme describes how this atlas encodes data into visual traits; it is not an objective ranking of franchise quality, cultural importance, or commercial performance.

How are the franchise pages and languages organized?
The creator describes one shared franchise-page template populated by JSON data. That template handles each page’s header art, timeline cards, age counter, and mascot overlay, rather than requiring a wholly separate page implementation for every franchise. The reported total is 40 franchise pages across English and Persian versions, plus a separate galaxy entry page.
English and Persian pages use separate URLs. A visit-level language selection is kept in session storage, according to the walkthrough. The shared template/data approach centralizes presentation logic while allowing franchise-specific content to vary through the data.

What implementation lessons did the creator report?
Calculate position from time rather than relying on an accumulator
With frame-by-frame accumulation, the current position depends on repeatedly applying updates. Recomputing from elapsed time makes the intended position a function of time itself, which the creator identifies as a more reliable foundation for this visualization.
Keep related time logic consistent
The creator reports that duplicating a fixed year-length value once caused franchise pages to show incorrect ages for different orbital lanes. The broader lesson from this specific bug is to reuse or centralize period logic where the galaxy motion and page counters depend on the same underlying values, rather than letting similar calculations drift apart.
Account for different scrolling needs
A shared stylesheet created a mismatch between the galaxy overview and franchise pages. The overview was fixed and did not scroll, while franchise pages needed document scrolling for timelines and scroll-triggered behavior. The creator’s account illustrates a trade-off of shared styles: common presentation can reduce duplication, but page types with different interaction requirements may need carefully scoped rules.

What the project demonstrates—and what it does not
Open Worlds Atlas demonstrates one way to combine a navigable Three.js overview, time-based orbital motion, and reusable content pages. The walkthrough gives a first-person account of the design and implementation choices, including a reported bug and styling issue. It does not establish an independently verified franchise catalog, benchmark the project against another 3D library, or provide evidence that the scoring method is an objective measure of franchise value.
