GitHub stars can help people discover a project, but they are not a payout and do not guarantee sponsors, customers, or a salary. Open-source projects can seek support through individual sponsorships, company funding, fiscal hosting, or paid services—but there is no dependable star-count-to-income conversion rate established by the sources available here.
What a GitHub star does—and does not—mean
A star is a signal of interest and a way for people to bookmark a repository. It is not a payment, contract, or commitment to fund the project. Popularity may make a project more visible, but visibility alone does not establish revenue.
GitHub’s official guidance describes ways to receive support; it does not report a representative earnings dataset. The reviewed sources therefore do not support a claim such as “a project earns a certain amount per star” or a promise that reaching a particular star count will produce income.

Ways an open-source project can receive money
Individual sponsorships
GitHub Sponsors lets individuals and organizations financially support open-source contributors. Maintainers can offer sponsorship options and make them easier to find with a sponsor button on a repository. GitHub recommends offering both recurring and one-time options: “It’s best to set up a range of different sponsorship options, including monthly and one-time tiers, to make it easy for anyone to support your work.” Read GitHub’s contributor guidance.
#1 Best Overall
A sponsor button makes an option visible; it does not ensure that anyone will contribute. Before setting up a program, check GitHub’s current eligibility, tax, and payout requirements. See the GitHub Sponsors documentation and its setup guidance.
Company sponsorship and pooled funding
If organizations rely on a project, maintainers can explain the concrete value it provides—such as the role it plays in a workflow or the work required to keep it dependable—and ask whether a company is willing to support its maintenance. Open Source Collective’s company resource emphasizes explaining project value as part of building trust. This is a possible funding route, not an assurance that a company will contribute.
Rank #2
Company sponsorship is different from selling a service: a sponsor supports the project, while a customer paying for consulting, support, or a hosted product expects defined services. Open Source Collective also describes corporate funds and arrangements that can direct pooled funding to projects. The availability and terms of any arrangement should be checked directly with the organization.

Fiscal hosting
A fiscal host can provide an administrative structure for receiving and managing project funds. Open Source Collective documents a GitHub Sponsors arrangement for participating projects, including monthly transfers. That describes a particular setup, not a universal payment schedule or a guarantee of funding. Review the host’s current eligibility criteria, fees, terms, and transfer details before deciding whether it fits your project.

Paid support, consulting, or a hosted service
Some projects may be able to offer paid help or a hosted version alongside open-source software. These options make sense only when users have a real need and maintainers can meet it without undermining the project’s core work or community expectations.
GitHub’s guide to getting paid for open-source work notes that raising money is difficult and suggests researching funding options and creating a revenue stream. It does not prescribe one model for every project. Consider the ongoing work involved in answering support requests, delivering services, or operating a hosted offering before committing.

How to choose a funding route
Compare options by who pays, what they expect in return, how predictable the income is, and what administration the arrangement adds. The official resources describe mechanisms, but they do not provide a common fee or earnings comparison, so verify current terms rather than relying on a universal estimate.
| Route | Who pays | Payment pattern | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual sponsorship | Individual supporters or organizations | Can include monthly and one-time options, according to GitHub’s guidance | Eligibility, tax and payout requirements, and current platform terms |
| Company sponsorship or pooled funds | Companies or pooled corporate funding | Not stated in the cited Open Source Collective materials as a universal pattern | What value the project offers, the specific arrangement, and current terms |
| Fiscal hosting | Project funders, with funds administered through a host | Open Source Collective documents monthly transfers for participating projects in its GitHub Sponsors arrangement | Host eligibility, fees, transfer details, and current terms |
| Paid support, consulting, or hosting | Customers who need a defined service | Depends on the service arrangement | User demand, delivery capacity, and expectations around the open-source project |
Make the funding request concrete
People and companies need to understand what they are supporting. State what ongoing maintenance involves, why it matters to users, and which ways to contribute are available. Keep the request honest: describe the project’s needs and what a payment means, without implying that a star count predicts funding or that sponsorship buys a particular service unless you have explicitly defined one.
Best Value
- Versatile tools for office, classroom or home
- Not just for creating classroom books or laminated instruction manuals
- Hang sheet protectors for easy change-outs or charts for easy access
- Easy to open; reliable closure
- Sturdy, metal construction
For individual contributions, a repository sponsor button can surface the available options where people already encounter the project. For company outreach, explain how the software is used and why continued maintenance has value. For service revenue, validate that users actually want the offering and that maintainers can sustain it.
What maintainers can reasonably expect
These funding routes are mechanisms, not forecasts. The cited GitHub and Open Source Collective materials explain ways to accept or administer support; they do not establish typical project income, a sponsorship conversion rate, or an earnings-per-star figure. Treat stars as a visibility signal and evaluate funding based on actual support, agreements, and service demand.
