The practical choice is not simply “which app is open source?” Joplin and Standard Notes publish their source code, while the available Obsidian documentation establishes a file-based vault and optional sync but does not establish Obsidian itself as open source. Your better decision hinges on where notes live, who operates synchronization, how encryption works, and how easily you can recover or migrate your data.

Choose Obsidian when ordinary local files and a flexible vault matter most; choose Joplin when you want an open-source app with several sync destinations; choose Standard Notes when an account-centered, client-side-encrypted workflow is the priority. What “open-source” means in this comparison

“Open source” describes how software code is licensed and made available, not where your notes are stored or how synchronization is operated. The evidence available for this comparison supports calling Joplin and Standard Notes open source: Joplin describes itself as a free, open-source notes and to-do application, and Standard Notes says its application and server source code are public. The reviewed Obsidian material describes local vault files and several synchronization methods, but it does not establish that Obsidian is open source.

That distinction matters because a source-available application can still use a hosted service, while a file-centered application can give you substantial control without being open source. Evaluate the storage and recovery model separately from the code-availability label.

Storage and portability: files versus managed data

Obsidian: a vault made of local files

Obsidian stores notes as files inside a vault. That gives you a transparent recovery path: the vault is a folder you can copy, archive, inspect, and include in an ordinary backup system. You are not dependent on one synchronization service to possess the only usable copy.

The file model also affects how you work. You can decide where the vault resides, use more than one synchronization method, and open the files with other tools when appropriate. Test those alternatives with representative notes before committing to a large migration, especially if your vault contains attachments, embedded content, links, or app-specific formatting.

File access is not the same as automatic protection. A local vault remains local data on your device. Obsidian’s sync-security documentation explicitly distinguishes the encryption of a remote vault from the local vault: choosing an encryption mode for Sync does not encrypt the local files. Use operating-system security, full-disk encryption, account protection, and a separate backup policy for the devices that hold the vault.

Joplin: an application-managed notebook database

Joplin presents notes, notebooks, tags, and attachments through its applications rather than as a simple folder of individually edited text files. That can make the notebook experience coherent across devices, but it means portability depends more on Joplin’s export formats and synchronization process than on opening a folder directly.

Before moving a substantial library, export a representative sample and verify headings, checklists, images, attachments, internal links, tags, and dates in the target application. Keep the original Joplin data and export until you have confirmed that the destination contains everything you need.

Standard Notes: encrypted account data plus exports

Standard Notes centers on an account whose data is encrypted on the client before it is sent to the service. Its published encryption specification says the server cannot read or decrypt encrypted content. This protects the hosted copy, but it also makes account credentials, encryption keys, and recovery procedures operationally important.

Standard Notes documents both encrypted and decrypted backups. An encrypted backup is useful for restoring into the application; a decrypted export can be read outside the app but must be protected like any other unencrypted document. Store decrypted files only in a location with appropriate access controls, and remove temporary copies when the migration or inspection is complete.

How synchronization differs in practice

Obsidian: choose a method, or use Obsidian Sync

Obsidian’s help documentation describes multiple ways to synchronize a vault, so purchasing Obsidian Sync is optional rather than a prerequisite for using the application. Your choice determines who operates the transport and what conflict or recovery tools are available.

Obsidian Sync offers a security choice for the remote vault. New remote vaults default to end-to-end encryption, while standard encryption is also available. Under end-to-end encryption, Obsidian says it cannot access the remote vault. Under standard encryption, the key is managed by Obsidian. This choice concerns the remote copy; it does not encrypt the local vault on your computer or phone.

Joplin: select a destination that matches your control requirements

Joplin’s overview lists synchronization through Nextcloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, and Joplin Cloud, among other supported options. This gives you a choice between operating or selecting a storage provider and using Joplin’s hosted service. The trade-off is configuration responsibility: a provider you operate may require maintenance, while a hosted option reduces infrastructure work but places more reliance on that service.

Joplin supports end-to-end encryption in its applications. Its documentation warns that the initial encrypted synchronization can take longer because data must be encrypted and sent again. Plan the first sync when devices have stable connectivity and enough time to complete; do not assume that a long first synchronization indicates data loss.

Standard Notes: managed synchronization with client-side encryption

Standard Notes is designed around encrypted account synchronization rather than choosing an arbitrary storage folder. The client encrypts account data before the server receives it, so the service can synchronize ciphertext without being able to decrypt the note contents.

This approach is convenient when you want the same account model on several devices, but it makes recovery planning different from a file-based vault. Keep your account access information current, understand how the application restores an encrypted backup, and maintain a backup that you can actually open before an emergency occurs.

Encryption and privacy: what is protected, and where?

Remote synchronization is not local-device encryption

A note can be encrypted while traveling to or sitting on a server and still be readable in plaintext on a laptop, phone, or tablet. Obsidian’s documentation makes this boundary explicit: its Sync encryption setting affects the remote vault, not the local vault. For every application, secure the devices that cache or display notes with a strong login, automatic updates, screen locking, and full-device encryption where your operating system supports it.

Obsidian’s two remote-vault modes

For a new remote Obsidian vault, end-to-end encryption is the default according to the official help documentation. Obsidian says it cannot access a remote vault configured that way. Standard encryption remains available, with the encryption key managed by Obsidian. Decide before adding sensitive material, because the security property and recovery responsibilities differ between the two modes.

Joplin’s end-to-end encryption setup cost

Joplin supports end-to-end encryption across its applications. The practical cost is the first encrypted sync: the application must encrypt the data and send it again, so the initial operation can take longer. Treat this as a setup step, not as a performance conclusion about every later synchronization.

Standard Notes’ client-side encryption and recovery trade-off

Standard Notes’ specification describes client-side encryption in which the server cannot decrypt encrypted account data. That limits what the service can do with your plaintext, but it also means the service cannot simply reset your encryption credentials and reveal your notes. Protect the credentials and recovery material required by the application, and test restoration from an encrypted backup while you still have a working device.

Editing and organization workflows

Obsidian: adaptable file-based writing

Obsidian is a natural fit when you want your notes to remain files and expect to shape the vault around your own conventions. Decide early on folder naming, attachment locations, link style, and backup frequency. A flexible vault can become difficult to maintain if every device or plugin introduces a different convention, so document the rules you intend to keep.

Joplin: notes and to-dos in one application

Joplin explicitly positions itself as a notes and to-do application. Its notebook and synchronization model suits people who want those items managed together rather than assembling a file system and separate task conventions. The cost of that integration is greater dependence on Joplin’s export and sync behavior when you move elsewhere.

Standard Notes: several editor types

Standard Notes’ editor documentation lists plain-text, rich-text, Markdown, spreadsheet, and code editors. Some derived editors are based on third-party projects and may be licensed rather than maintained directly by Standard Notes, so check the editor’s current support and licensing details when that distinction matters to your workflow.

Choose an editor per note type instead of assuming that every format will behave identically. A plain-text or Markdown note is usually easier to inspect outside the application than a rich-text or spreadsheet note, while a specialized editor may preserve structure that a plain-text export cannot.

Migration and backup: a procedure that works for all three

No collected source establishes a complete, current three-way migration result. The safest approach is a staged test that protects the original library and checks the content you actually use.

1. Inventory your data. Record the number of notes, notebooks or folders, attachments, tags, internal links, templates, and any encrypted or specialized content.
2. Create an untouched backup. For Obsidian, copy the entire vault. For Joplin or Standard Notes, create the application’s supported export or backup and retain the original account or application data.
3. Select representative notes. Include a plain note, a long note, a checklist, a note with images, an attachment, internal links, tags, and any code or table content you rely on.
4. Export using the source application’s current controls. Do not rely on copy-and-paste for a whole library; it can lose metadata, attachments, or links.
5. Import into the destination and inspect the sample. Check text, headings, checkboxes, images, attachment paths, links, tags, dates, and special editor content.
6. Test synchronization on a second device. Confirm that the imported notes arrive, that edits do not create unexpected duplicates, and that attachments remain available.
7. Keep both copies during the verification period. Only retire the source after you can restore the destination from its backup and have confirmed the notes you cannot recreate.

Cost and plan considerations

When comparing totals, include more than the subscription line. A self-operated synchronization destination may require storage, updates, monitoring, and recovery work. A hosted plan may cost more but reduce those tasks. Also account for the time needed to configure encryption, test backups, and resolve conflicts.

Which app fits your priorities?

Choose Obsidian when file control is the deciding factor

• You want notes in a folder that ordinary backup tools can copy.
• You value the ability to choose among synchronization methods.
• You are willing to secure the local vault separately from any remote-vault encryption.
• You prefer to design your own folder, link, and attachment conventions.

Choose Joplin when sync-destination choice and open-source software are central

• You want an application explicitly presented as free and open source.
• You need to choose among destinations such as Nextcloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, or Joplin Cloud.
• You accept a potentially longer first synchronization when enabling end-to-end encryption.
• You want notes and to-dos managed in one application.

Choose Standard Notes when encrypted account synchronization is the priority

• You want client-side encryption designed so the server cannot decrypt note content.
• You prefer an account-centered workflow over selecting a synchronization folder.

Assuming all three products are open source

Do not use the label as a proxy for architecture. The established open-source claims apply to Joplin and Standard Notes; the reviewed Obsidian material establishes file storage and optional sync, not open-source status.

Confusing encrypted sync with an encrypted computer

Remote end-to-end encryption does not protect a local vault from someone who can sign in to the device or read its files. Use device-level protections and limit where local copies are stored.

Choosing a provider without testing recovery

A destination that syncs successfully can still be unsuitable if you cannot restore after a lost device or account problem. Perform a small restore test before migrating your entire library.

Treating a decrypted backup like a harmless export

A decrypted Standard Notes export is readable outside the application. Store it temporarily in a protected location, restrict access, and delete unnecessary copies after verification.

Using a historical price as a current quote

The Obsidian Sync figure above was announced in 2024. Prices, plan limits, supported platforms, and sync destinations can change, so confirm live terms immediately before purchase or publication.

A concise decision rule

Start with the failure you most want to avoid. If losing access to ordinary files worries you most, begin with Obsidian’s vault model and build a disciplined backup routine. If being locked into one synchronization operator worries you most, evaluate Joplin’s destination choices and its encryption setup time. If exposing note content to a service worries you most, evaluate Standard Notes’ client-side encryption alongside the responsibility of safeguarding credentials and encrypted backups. That priority-based approach is more reliable than selecting an app from the “open-source” label alone.
