Open-source app developers can earn money through donations and sponsorships, paid services such as hosting or support, subscriptions, and—in some cases—paid software tiers or dual licensing. Those payments are not interchangeable: a donation may simply support development, while a service or subscription should spell out what the customer receives. The app’s open-source status alone does not tell you what a particular payment includes.
What “open source” does—and doesn’t—tell you about payment
Open source describes the software’s licensing and the permissions that license grants. It does not, by itself, tell you whether a developer accepts donations, whether a company charges to operate the software for you, or whether a particular app has paid features. Nor does the label alone establish that hosting, support, or other services will be free.
That distinction matters because people often use “paying for an open-source app” to mean several different things. You might be voluntarily supporting the people who maintain it, buying someone’s time or operational responsibility, or subscribing to a product tier. Before paying, identify which arrangement the offer describes. The intended recipient, what you receive, and what happens if you stop paying can differ substantially.

How open-source app developers make money
Donations and sponsorships
A donation is a contribution of financial support; it does not necessarily purchase a feature, service, or personal response. A project may accept a one-time gift, recurring contributions, or both. F-Droid directs people who want to donate to app developers to the options listed for each app, and recommends services such as Liberapay and Open Collective. Its own donation page accepts one-time gifts and recurring monthly donations: F-Droid’s donation options.

Project listings can also help you find the developer’s preferred method. F-Droid’s developer FAQ describes donation metadata that app listings can use to link to options including Bitcoin, Liberapay, Litecoin, Open Collective, and Taler. Those are possible methods, not a promise that every app supports all of them: F-Droid’s app developer FAQ.
Sponsorship is another way to fund contributors. On GitHub, sponsored accounts set the tiers they offer and the benefits attached to them; available sponsorships may be one-time or monthly. The details therefore depend on the individual developer’s page, rather than on a universal platform-wide package. GitHub also says eligibility to receive sponsorships depends on living in a supported region. See GitHub’s contributor sponsorship guidance and its information on sponsorships, fees, and taxes.
GitHub describes the purpose of its program this way: “GitHub Sponsors allows the developer community to financially support the open source projects they depend on, directly on GitHub.” That describes a funding mechanism, not a guarantee that a sponsored project will meet a particular need. GitHub also states that it does not endorse sponsored projects; sponsorship should not be treated as a platform recommendation.
Paid services around the software
A business can charge for work connected to open-source software without selling exclusive access to its source code. The Swiss Federal Administration’s 2025 practical guidelines list support, maintenance, operation, development, consulting, and training as possible services. Standardized services that recur may be sold as subscriptions. The source software and the service around it are separate parts of the offer: for example, an operator may charge to host and maintain an instance for a customer.
For a service, look for a description of the actual work and responsibility being purchased. A hosting plan, support contract, implementation engagement, and training session are different deliverables, even if they involve the same app. Check the duration, scope, response or maintenance commitments if stated, renewal terms, and what the provider expects you to manage yourself. The label “open source” does not supply those contract details.

Paid tiers and open core
Some companies combine an open-source codebase with commercial subscriptions or additional features. This is often called an open-core model, but it is one business approach—not a standard property of every open-source app. GitLab’s handbook describes its own model: the company earns revenue through paid subscriptions and offers source-available features alongside its open-source code. It also distinguishes stewardship of its open-source codebase from its SaaS services. That company-specific explanation is available in GitLab’s stewardship handbook.
When a product has paid tiers, inspect which features are included at each level and how the company licenses them. “Paid” and “open source” are not opposites in every product: a company may charge for a subscription or service while also publishing open-source code. But a feature being sold by a company does not automatically make that feature open source. GitLab’s example illustrates why the terms for the code, the paid features, and any hosted service should be considered separately.

Some developers or companies offer the same software under an open-source license and a separate proprietary license. The Swiss Federal Administration’s 2025 guidelines describe this as a possible licensing path when the company owns the relevant intellectual property and meets the applicable licensing conditions. It is not an option that any app developer can necessarily apply to an entire project: contributions from other rights holders and the project’s license terms can affect what the company is entitled to offer. If a vendor sells a separate license, read what code and rights it covers rather than assuming the payment changes the rights you already have under the open-source license.

What happens when you pay
The payment’s consequences depend on its type and on the offer’s terms. Use the label as a starting point, not as a substitute for reading the description.

Do not infer that payment automatically gives you ownership of the project, a say in its governance, a guaranteed feature, priority support, or a license beyond the one expressly offered. Those outcomes would need to be stated in the applicable terms. A platform that processes a sponsorship is also not necessarily the developer or project receiving the money; check the named recipient.
How to compare ways to support an app
If a project offers more than one way to contribute, compare the choices against your goal. If you want to help fund ongoing work without buying a particular service, a donation or sponsorship may fit. If you need someone to run the app, train your team, or provide support, choose based on the service terms rather than treating a general contribution as a service contract.

- Find the offer on the project’s own listing or developer page. F-Droid says to use the donation options listed for each app. Confirm that the link names the project or recipient you intend to support.
- Classify the payment. Decide whether it is optional support, a tier with stated benefits, a service purchase, a product subscription, or a separate license.
- Read the precise promise. Note any feature, support, hosting, or other deliverable actually described. Do not assume that a tier provides something merely because you are paying.
- Check timing and renewal. Confirm whether the charge is one-time or recurring, and find the applicable cancellation or renewal information before committing.
- Check who receives the funds and who is responsible. A platform, fiscal host, project organization, individual maintainer, and service provider can play different roles.
- Check access and eligibility. A paid feature may depend on an ongoing subscription, and a funding platform or program may have regional or other eligibility conditions.
This process helps separate “I want to support the work” from “I need a service or feature.” GitHub’s developer-defined sponsorship tiers and F-Droid’s app-specific donation links make clear why the exact project offer matters. Neither the existence of a funding platform nor an open-source license tells you what every individual developer promises in return.

Funding and program rules are specific to each platform. GitHub says a contributor must live in a supported region to be eligible to become a sponsored developer; a user should consult the current platform documentation rather than assume availability everywhere. Sponsorship fees and tax handling are also addressed separately in GitHub’s fees and taxes documentation.
Company or organization programs can have their own criteria as well. GitLab’s open-source program handbook requires OSI-approved licenses and says a qualifying organization cannot seek profit by selling services, enhancements, or add-ons through that program. Those conditions belong to that program, not to a general definition of open-source software. See the program’s eligibility information.
Supported regions, program rules, product packaging, and payment terms can change. Verify the current terms on the relevant project, provider, or platform page at the time you pay. The available sources describe mechanisms and particular policies; they do not establish a typical income for open-source app developers or show that donations reliably provide a living wage.

Practical decision: support the work or buy a result?
Start with the outcome you want. If your aim is simply to help maintainers keep working, choose a clearly identified donation or sponsorship and confirm its frequency. If you need a particular result—such as a hosted instance, maintenance, training, or support—look for a service offer that defines that result and the provider’s responsibilities. If you are considering a paid feature or separate license, inspect its terms and licensing status directly.
For readers deciding whether to contribute at all, the important point is that payment is optional unless it is the condition for a particular paid service or product access. A contribution can support useful software without purchasing control over its roadmap or guaranteeing a personal benefit. Choose based on the actual promise, not on assumptions attached to the words “open source,” “donation,” or “sponsor.”
