Online backgammon dice are normally selected by server-side software, not by a virtual die running on your phone or computer. A random-number generator (RNG) produces an unpredictable value, the platform converts that value into two numbers from 1 through 6, and the client displays the result. The animation is presentation; the server’s selection logic is what determines the roll.
Whether rolls are trustworthy depends on more than seeing a varied sequence. A credible system must make future results difficult to predict, give each face its intended probability, avoid bias when converting random bits into six faces, and provide evidence—such as logs, open verification, or independent testing—that matches the claims being made.
What happens when you roll online
Although implementations differ between services, an online roll usually follows a server-to-client workflow:

- Your game sends a roll request. The move or turn state is transmitted to the platform’s server.
- The server obtains random data. An RNG or cryptographically secure RNG produces bits, bytes, or numbers. The generator should not use the match position, the player’s identity, or a desired game outcome as an input unless that design is explicitly disclosed and independently controlled.
- The platform maps the data to die faces. The conversion turns the random output into values from 1 to 6. Two independent values are needed for an ordinary backgammon roll.
- The server records and returns the result. The result and, depending on the service, a match log or audit information are sent to both clients.
- Your device renders the roll. Dice graphics, sound, and animation communicate the result but do not normally generate it.
This separation matters when investigating a suspicious roll. Changing an animation or display cannot by itself change a result already selected by the server. Conversely, a polished animation is not evidence that the underlying generator is fair.

Random-number generator
An RNG is the mechanism that supplies values used to determine a roll. NIST’s SP 800-90A describes deterministic random bit generators as systems that produce random bits using methods based on hash functions or block ciphers. That is general cryptographic guidance, not a certification that any particular backgammon platform meets the standard.
Uniform distribution
For a fair six-sided die, each face should have the same intended probability over repeated independent draws. A long-run count will not contain exactly the same number of ones, twos, threes, fours, fives, and sixes, but no face should receive a systematic advantage from the implementation.
Unpredictability
Unpredictability means that knowing earlier rolls should not let a player feasibly calculate the next one. A sequence can be statistically balanced and still be predictable if the generator’s internal state is exposed. The reverse is also true: an unpredictable generator can be biased if its output is mapped incorrectly.

Mapping is the conversion from random bits or bytes to six legal die faces. This step is easy to overlook. A sound random source does not automatically produce fair dice if the conversion gives some faces more input values than others.
How a six-sided result can become biased
A common shortcut is to take a random byte—an integer from 0 through 255—and calculate its remainder after division by 6. The problem is that 256 is not divisible by 6. Some remainders would correspond to 43 byte values and others to 42, giving a small but real advantage to certain faces.
Tournament Land’s publicly documented implementation illustrates a way to avoid that problem. It rejects byte values from 252 through 255, leaving 252 accepted values. Because 252 divides evenly by 6, each face can be assigned the same number of accepted byte values. The repository describes this as rejection sampling and says its production system derives rolls with HMAC-SHA256, uses a nonce for successive rolls, and includes an offline verifier. Those details describe that project’s implementation; they are not a universal requirement for every online backgammon service.
Other systems can use larger random integers, cryptographic libraries, or a different rejection threshold. The essential test is whether every face receives the same probability after conversion. Documentation should explain the range of source values, the conversion rule, and what happens to values outside an evenly divisible range.

What commit-reveal verification proves
Commit-reveal is an audit pattern that lets observers check a sequence after a match. Before play, the platform creates a secret seed and publishes a cryptographic hash of it. Publishing the hash commits the operator to one seed without revealing the seed itself.
During the match, rolls can be derived from that seed together with player or client seeds, a counter, and a defined cryptographic function. After the match, the platform reveals the secret seed. Anyone with the commitment, the revealed seed, the other stated inputs, and the algorithm can:
- Hash the revealed seed and confirm that it matches the pre-match commitment.
- Recompute each roll in order using the published inputs and counter.
- Compare the recomputed values with the match record.
This can show that the recorded sequence was fixed by the committed inputs rather than selected after the outcome was known. It does not, on its own, prove that the original seed was generated with perfect entropy, that every client seed was chosen independently, or that the game client displayed the recomputed result correctly. It is one verification design, not a feature that every platform offers.
What “fair dice” should mean
Fairness has several separate dimensions. Treating them as one test creates false confidence.

A histogram is descriptive evidence: it tells you what appeared in the recorded sample. It cannot by itself reveal whether the sample was large enough, whether rolls were independent, or whether an implementation bug affected the results.
Why online rolls can look streaky
Independent random draws naturally produce clusters. Several doubles in a short match, repeated rolls that help one position, or a run of missed chances can all occur without a biased generator. Short sequences are especially poor at demonstrating long-run frequencies.
Human attention also magnifies unusual events. Players remember a run that changed a match and forget ordinary rolls that did not matter. The result is a strong impression of a pattern even when the underlying process has no pattern that can be exploited.

Backgammon.com explicitly warns that certified randomness can still produce streaks and says its match analysis separates decision quality from roll luck. That is the operator’s explanation and product claim, not independent psychological research. The practical lesson is to avoid declaring a platform fair or rigged from one match, a handful of screenshots, or a small personal sample.

What public evidence different platforms describe
Backgammon.com
Its Fair Dice page says rolls are generated on servers with a cryptographically secure RNG and that no match information is provided to the generator. The platform reports GLI testing in July 2026 and WBGF due diligence in August 2026. Its certification explanation says GLI examined unpredictability, uniform distribution, and statistical randomness, and that a Certificate of Integrity is hosted by GLI.
These are time-sensitive claims made by the platform. To treat them as current independent evidence, inspect the certificate itself, including the system covered, test scope, issue date, and validity status. A certificate for one implementation or period should not automatically be generalized to later code, other products, or every roll served by the company.
Backgammon Galaxy
A help article modified May 20, 2025, says the service uses a cryptographically secure RNG for all rolls and provides dice statistics on player profiles. The article date matters because documentation and software can change. Profile statistics can help a player review observed outcomes, but they are not equivalent to an independently recomputable roll sequence or a laboratory certificate.
Tournament Land
Its public repository documents post-match commit-reveal, a nonce, HMAC-SHA256 derivation, rejection sampling, and an offline verifier. The repository says the code is used in production. Open code and a verifier make the method inspectable and allow a completed sequence to be checked, but the production-use statement is the project’s own claim. Users still need to confirm that the deployed service matches the published code and that the revealed inputs are complete.

Use separate checks rather than looking for one reassuring sentence:
- Find the generation location. Look for a clear statement that rolls are selected on the server and identify whether the client merely displays the result.
- Read the RNG description. Check whether the platform names a cryptographically secure generator, explains its inputs, and states that match information is excluded.
- Check the mapping rule. Look for an explanation of how random bytes or integers become values 1 through 6 and whether modulo bias is prevented.
- Look for verifiable records. Determine whether match logs, seeds, commitments, counters, or a downloadable verifier are available after play.
- Separate statistics from proof. A profile chart shows observed results; it does not establish independence or implementation integrity.
- Inspect certification scope. Record the laboratory, certificate type, issue date, software or system version, and the exact properties tested.
- Recheck freshness. A dated help article or certificate may no longer describe the current deployment after a code change.
Common mistakes when interpreting dice data
“My last 20 rolls were unlucky, so the RNG is rigged.”
A small personal sample is too limited to distinguish ordinary variance from a systematic problem. Preserve the complete match record and look for a repeatable, independently testable issue instead of relying on memory.

“The face counts are close, so the system is proven fair.”
Similar counts are compatible with a fair process, but they do not prove that the generator was unpredictable, that rolls were independent, or that the mapping code was deployed as documented.
“A security label guarantees every part of the game.”
A cryptographically secure RNG designation concerns the generator’s resistance to prediction. It does not automatically cover user-interface code, logging, seed generation, deployment changes, or the conversion from bytes to faces.
“A certification date applies forever.”
Testing is bounded by the system and period examined. Confirm whether later releases, infrastructure changes, or a different game mode fall within the certificate’s scope.
What players can and cannot conclude
You can reasonably ask whether a platform explains its server-side process, prevents predictable output, maps random data without bias, and offers records or independent review. You can compare those transparency features across services without claiming that one public statement proves universal fairness.
You cannot establish a platform’s integrity solely from a streak, a short frequency chart, or the presence of animated dice. Stronger evidence combines a technically described RNG, a documented unbiased mapping, complete and tamper-evident logs or commit-reveal data, and an independent assessment whose date and scope match the service you are using.
Bottom line for online backgammon players
Online backgammon dice are usually server-generated RNG outcomes that your device displays. Fairness requires both unpredictable generation and an unbiased conversion to six faces. Rejection sampling is one documented way to prevent modulo bias, while commit-reveal systems can let anyone recompute a completed match. Streaks remain possible under a fair process, so judge a platform by the quality and scope of its technical documentation, verifiable records, and independent testing—not by how a single match felt.
