The question in my presale test asked whether a $39 digital product would change people’s workflow. But my decision was whether to build it only if people would pay $39. A commenter pointed out that mismatch; I proposed a redesigned gate that asks about payment directly. The new gate has not run, so there is no result to claim.
What my first validation gate actually measured
In a DEV Community post dated October 6, Lu Chen describes running a 48-hour gate for a $39 digital product. His stated rule was to drop the idea unless it received ten reservations within 48 hours. He reports that it received zero. These are figures from one author-reported experiment, not an independently audited result or an industry benchmark. Chen’s account does not explicitly state the year in its text.
The form asked whether the product would change respondents’ workflow. That can reveal perceived usefulness or curiosity, but it does not directly ask whether someone will pay the proposed price. Chen says commenter “dailmarket,” whom he describes as running a marketplace for agent services, identified that gap. Chen accepted the distinction: the question measured interest, while the build decision depended on willingness to pay.

As Chen put it, “The design was fine. What I shipped was not the design.” The problem was not simply that the gate returned zero reservations; it was that the question and the decision rule were aimed at different signals.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the proposed redesign changes
Chen’s proposed version asks respondents directly, “would you pay $39 for this.” A yes would lead to a pay-now stage, and the proposed kill rule remains fewer than ten price-yeses within 48 hours. The price and cutoff are Chen’s choices for this particular test, not evidence that $39 or ten responses is right for other products.
- Original signal: an answer about whether the product would change a workflow.
- Proposed signal: a direct yes or no to paying the stated $39 price, followed by a payment step for a yes.
- Decision rule: the original rule was ten reservations in 48 hours; the proposed rule is to drop the idea if fewer than ten respondents say yes to the price within 48 hours.
A stated yes is still weaker evidence than a completed payment. Routing a yes to pay-now makes the next behavior observable, but the account does not report a completed redesigned test or its outcome.

Why Chen wants to check question order
Chen also proposed splitting respondents: half would see the price question first, then he would compare their answers with the other group. His suggested test was to “split the respondents, give half the price question first, and see if the numbers differ between the two groups.” This split-sample idea was Chen’s addition, not the commenter’s recommendation, and no results are reported.
The idea is to check whether seeing a price before another prompt changes responses. A split is informative only if the groups are otherwise comparable and receive the questions in a clearly defined order; differences could still reflect how respondents were recruited or other aspects of the test. The available account supplies no controlled evidence on question-order effects, so it does not establish that this check will produce a particular result.

What the result does—and does not—say
Because the original gate produced zero reservations, Chen notes that both the original and redesigned rules would lead him to drop the product in this instance. The flaw matters counterfactually: if the workflow-interest answers had been high enough to trigger building, they might have encouraged work without directly establishing willingness to pay. The article does not show that this happened.
The redesigned gate remains a proposal. Chen writes, “The redesigned gate runs on the next validation round.” The figures in the account describe one person’s experiment, not a market study, a statistically established ten-person threshold, or proof that direct price questions improve conversion.

How to apply the lesson before building
To answer “How do I validate a product idea before I build it?”, start by writing down the decision the evidence must support. If the decision depends on payment, ask about payment at the actual proposed price rather than treating workflow interest as a substitute.
- Name the decision. State what outcome would make you build, revise, or stop.
- Match the question to the decision. For a paid product, distinguish “would this change your workflow” from “would you pay this price?” They measure different things.
- Choose a meaningful next action. A yes can be followed by a checkout or another concrete commitment. Do not describe a stated yes as a sale.
- Set the threshold and time window in advance. Chen used ten responses in 48 hours, but that rule is his own test design, not a universal standard.
- Track exposure and order. If question order could matter, decide how respondents will be split and record which version each person sees before interpreting differences.
- Report the result narrowly. Say how many people encountered the test, what they were asked, and what action they took; avoid generalizing a small or single test to a whole market.
Jay Clouse’s account of preselling a course before production, followed by an emphasis on validating the underlying problem, offers a related personal perspective—not controlled proof that presales always work. Clouse’s discussion of validating product ideas is useful alongside Chen’s narrower lesson: a payment signal and evidence that a real problem exists answer related but distinct questions.
