An on-device translation keyboard performs the translation computation on your phone or tablet instead of sending the translation request to a remote server—but only when that feature supports local processing and the required language resources are installed. Apple states that Translate and System-wide translation run on the device when both languages have been downloaded. That condition does not mean every keyboard activity is offline or that no information can ever leave the device.

Translation, keyboard personalization, account synchronization, optional product-improvement sharing and usage telemetry are separate data paths. A keyboard can translate a sentence locally while still syncing its learned language model or sending diagnostic statistics. To understand what happens to your text, identify the specific product, platform, language-download state and account settings involved.

What “on-device translation” actually means

When you ask a keyboard or system translation feature to translate selected or composed text, the software must run a translation model somewhere. In a local path, the model and language data are stored on the device, the device computes the result, and the translated text is returned to the active app’s text field. A server path sends the request to a provider, waits for remote processing and receives the result.

“On-device” describes the location of that translation computation for a particular request. It is not a guarantee that the keyboard never communicates with the internet, never stores text or never synchronizes settings. Autocorrection, prediction, account backup and analytics can use different systems from translation.

Why downloaded languages matter

Local translation needs language resources for both sides of the pair. Apple’s documentation says processing takes place on the device when both languages being translated have been downloaded. Installing the app or enabling a keyboard alone does not establish that a request can be handled offline. If either language is missing, the feature may need a network connection or may be unavailable; the exact fallback depends on the product and operating system.

What is not established universally

The available official documentation describes Apple Translate and System-wide translation and Microsoft SwiftKey’s data practices. It does not establish one implementation for every translation keyboard, Android product or third-party app. Menus, language support, fallback behavior and retention can differ, so a privacy conclusion about one product should not be extended to another without documentation for that product.

The translation pipeline, from keystroke to inserted result

  1. Text enters the active field. The keyboard extension receives characters as you type in an app. A translation command may use text you select, text you have composed or text supplied through a dedicated translation control.
  2. The feature identifies the source and target languages. It may use your selected languages, an automatic detection setting or a language pair you chose. The interface and selection workflow vary by keyboard and platform.
  3. A model processes the request. With a supported local language pair downloaded, the device runs the translation model locally. With a server path, the request is transmitted to the provider and processed remotely.
  4. The result returns to the editing context. The translated text is displayed or inserted into the active text field. The insertion step does not by itself reveal whether computation happened locally.
  5. Other systems may handle related data. Prediction learning, account backup, crash reports, aggregate usage statistics and optional sample sharing can follow separate routes even when translation itself was local.

Those stages explain why “the translation stayed on my phone” and “the keyboard sent no information” are different claims. The first concerns the translation computation. The second would require examining every other feature and setting.

Apple Translate and System-wide translation: conditional local processing

Apple’s Translation & Privacy documentation, dated September 14, 2026, provides the clearest documented example of conditional on-device processing. Apple states: “When the languages you are translating between have both been downloaded, processing takes place on your device.” Downloading both the source and target languages is therefore the decisive prerequisite for the local path described by Apple.

When Apple says data may be sent to Apple

Apple also says that text and audio you select for translation may be sent to Apple for processing. Requests are associated with a random, rotating identifier rather than your Apple Account, email address or other Apple-service information. That statement describes a different processing path from the downloaded-language case; it is not evidence that every translation request is always sent or that every request is always local.

Retention of translation inputs

Apple says transcripts of audio interactions and text inputs are stored by default for two years. A small subset that has been reviewed may be retained longer to improve Translate, System-wide translation and other natural-language-processing features. The two-year period is Apple’s stated default for these translation inputs, not a universal rule for other keyboards or apps.

How to interpret the Apple claims

For an Apple translation request, ask three questions before assuming an offline result:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Are both languages in the pair downloaded on the device?
  • Am I using Apple Translate or System-wide translation, rather than a separate keyboard with its own service?
  • Could the text or audio be handled through a network path under the current language and feature state?

Apple’s documentation is an official description of its own services, not an independent audit and not a statement about every iOS keyboard.

SwiftKey: translation is only one possible data path

Microsoft SwiftKey’s documentation focuses primarily on keyboard learning and sharing rather than establishing one universal translation architecture. SwiftKey uses machine learning to adapt to a person’s writing style. Microsoft says it can remember important words, likely word combinations and key-position patterns, and states: “By default, nothing Microsoft SwiftKey learns about your typing leaves your device.”

That default concerns learned typing data. It should not be read as a promise that every optional SwiftKey feature, account function or diagnostic exchange is local.

Backup & Sync can upload the language model

If you sign in and enable Backup & Sync, Microsoft says personal language-model data can be sent to Microsoft servers so predictions can be synchronized across devices. Turning on synchronization therefore changes where personalization data is stored. It is distinct from the location of a particular translation computation.

Optional sharing of typing snippets

Microsoft describes an optional product-improvement setting that can share short typing snippets, including phrases and keypress or correction information. Microsoft says users can change this setting. Because snippets can contain parts of what you typed, review the sharing choice separately from translation and from Backup & Sync.

Usage and crash information

Microsoft also says anonymous usage statistics, such as characters entered and keystrokes saved, may be sent periodically. Crash information may be sent to Microsoft and Google. These reports are telemetry, not the translation result, but they are still communications from the keyboard and should be considered in a complete privacy review.

What iOS Full Access permits for SwiftKey

On iOS, Microsoft says SwiftKey needs Full Access to communicate with its container app and to read or write language models, personalization and settings stored outside the keyboard-extension framework. The permission technically enables network access as well.

Microsoft’s stated practice is narrower than the technical capability. Its support page says: “Granting Full Access to Microsoft SwiftKey does not mean everything you type is transferred, despite a warning message that shows when you allow the permission.” Microsoft also says typed text is not transmitted unless a Microsoft SwiftKey Account is created.

Treat those as the vendor’s implementation statements, not as proof that the permission itself guarantees local processing. The permission explains what the extension can technically do; account status and individual sharing settings determine which optional data paths are active.

Local processing versus server processing

Question Local translation path Server translation path
Where is the translation model run? On the device for the supported feature and installed language pair. On the provider’s remote infrastructure after a request is transmitted.
Internet requirement Can work without a connection when the required language resources and feature support are present; exact offline behavior is product-specific. Normally requires network access to send the request and receive the result.
What must be installed? Both source and target language resources, where the product uses downloaded languages. Usually the app or keyboard plus access to the provider’s service; language resources may remain server-side.
Does this describe all keyboard activity? No. Prediction learning, synchronization and telemetry may use separate channels. No. A product can process some tasks locally and others remotely.
Retention example documented in the sources Apple’s local-processing statement does not eliminate other retention rules. Apple says submitted text and audio transcripts are stored by default for two years, with a reviewed subset potentially kept longer.

The table separates the processing location from storage and telemetry. A “local” cell does not mean zero data collection, and a “server” cell does not specify a universal retention period.

How to check what your setup is doing

  1. Identify the exact feature. Determine whether you are using Apple Translate, System-wide translation, SwiftKey or another keyboard’s own translation control. Do not infer one product’s behavior from another’s name or interface.
  2. Check both language downloads. For Apple’s documented local path, download the source and target languages and confirm that both are present before translating.
  3. Test the offline prerequisite without sensitive text. After downloading languages, temporarily disable connectivity and try a harmless sentence. A failure indicates that the feature, language pair or current workflow still depends on a network path; it does not prove how other keyboard functions behave.
  4. Review account synchronization. In SwiftKey, check whether you are signed in and whether Backup & Sync is enabled. Disable synchronization if you do not want personal language-model data uploaded for use across devices.
  5. Review improvement sharing. Find SwiftKey’s optional setting for sharing typing snippets and turn it off if you do not want phrases or keypress/correction samples used for product improvement.
  6. Review permissions in context. On iOS, Full Access enables communication with the container app and technically permits network access. Read that capability together with your account and sharing settings rather than treating the warning as evidence that every keystroke is uploaded.
  7. Protect sensitive fields. Use the operating system’s password and payment fields where possible, and verify that an app labels those fields correctly.

Password and payment-field caveats

Microsoft says SwiftKey does not learn from correctly designated password fields or remember long credit-card numbers. Its FAQ also notes exceptions: an incorrectly labeled field, a password previously typed in an ordinary message, or a “show password” action can allow a password to be learned. Field labeling is therefore part of the protection; do not assume that every field that looks like a password box is recognized correctly.

Avoid pasting secrets into a translation feature merely to test it. If a translation is necessary for confidential material, first determine whether the relevant language pair is available locally, whether the keyboard account is syncing data and whether optional sharing is disabled.

Common misunderstandings and troubleshooting

“I installed the keyboard, so translation must be offline.”

Installation is not the same as downloading both translation languages. Check the language resources and the specific feature’s offline requirements.

“Full Access means every character is uploaded.”

The permission makes network communication technically possible. Microsoft says the permission does not mean everything typed is transferred and separately describes account and sharing conditions. Inspect those settings instead of relying on the permission prompt alone.

“Local translation means nothing is retained.”

Local computation does not cancel retention rules for requests that take a server path, nor does it disable keyboard telemetry, account backup or optional snippet sharing. Review each data category separately.

“The translation failed offline, so the keyboard is unsafe.”

An offline failure may simply mean the needed language pair was not downloaded or the feature does not support local processing. It is a diagnostic result, not a privacy verdict. Check the language pair and documentation before drawing a conclusion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A translation is safe for a high-stakes decision because it was local.”

Processing location says nothing about translation accuracy. Apple warns that Translate should not be relied on where errors could cause harm or injury, for navigation, or for medical diagnosis or treatment.

A practical privacy checklist

  • Record the product, operating system and translation feature you are actually using.
  • Confirm both languages are downloaded when relying on Apple’s documented on-device path.
  • Separate translation processing from prediction learning, account synchronization and telemetry.
  • Keep SwiftKey Backup & Sync off unless cross-device language-model synchronization is worth the additional server storage.
  • Review and disable optional typing-snippet sharing if it does not fit your privacy needs.
  • Understand that iOS Full Access enables communication and network capability, while Microsoft’s stated data practices depend on account and feature settings.
  • Use correctly labeled password and payment fields, and avoid translating secrets as a test.
  • Do not use machine translation as the sole basis for medical, navigation, safety or other high-consequence decisions.
